Bigots Wig Out About Plan to ‘Disrupt’ Olympics

Even by the standards of fundamentalists and theo-cons, Brian Camenker of MassResistance is astonishingly bigoted. And now he’s terribly upset to find out that equality activists are planning to “disrupt” — his hyperbolic term — the Olympics with even mild protests of Russia’s totalitarian anti-gay law. At a conference, he recorded Patrick Burke of the You Can Play Project, speaking about plans that are in the works.

We’re going to have three weeks of sustained media presence there. We are going to have out LGBT athletes there. We are going to have very vocal and visible allies there.

We’ve spoken with the Canadian and U.S. hockey teams. We’re going to be doing work with both of those teams.

The frustrating part right now is we can’t talk about that publicly because if you talk about it publicly, the Russians don’t let you in the country. So when everyone keeps asking us “What are you going to do when you get there? What are you going to do when you get there?” and we keep having to say “We can’t tell you.”

The Russians have said they’ll confiscate rainbow flags if you try and bring them in your regular luggage. They’ve said they’ll confiscate pins. We are talking about utilizing diplomatic channels to get things into the country.

There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that will frustrate people because it won’t be made public until you see an athlete on a medal stand or at closing ceremonies.

In the dark recesses of Camenker’s twisted mind, that’s “outrageous” and would be an “embarrassment” to America.

The Russian government’s bold efforts to protect children and society has attracted applause and support from pro-family organizations around the world, and also from countries such as Nigeria and Uganda who are also dealing with these issues.

Yeah, it has attracted applause from authoritarian bigots who think people should be thrown in prison — or worse — merely for being gay and saying so publicly. This is hardly a point in Russia’s favor.

If this outrageous stunt is successful, it will be an embarrassment not only to the Russian government — which is working hard to have a clean, wholesome atmosphere for its Olympic games — but certainly to many Americans, given that American corporations, American athletes, and possibly even our government would be involved in this…

The international fallout from this, given the wide range of those involved, would surely be considerable.

Yes, it would. It would make Russia look terrible, which is a good thing. That’s how they should look. And it will make bigots like you look bad too, something you are incredibly good at doing. The punchline to all of this is that Camenker and his fellow bigots are always screaming about imagined persecution, saying that the “gaystapo” is trying to silence them. And here they are supporting a law that imprisons people for being openly gay and demanding that Americans be prevented from exercising their freedom of speech. Irony!

I’m sure these good fellows would insist that as the natural, god-anointed heads of their households, they expect their wives to take care of the irony.

Oh come on, CatieCat, that’s hardly fair. Winning the thread in the first comment? Give the rest of us a chance.

Oh come on, give ‘em a break! Oppression is and always has been extremely hard work. Fortunately this is something that the Russian government has had a great deal of practice at and an almost preternatural talent for.

Its not only ironic, but it reveals the true nature of Brian Camenker of MassResistance and his sick organization.

I love that the hockey teams are helping out. It’s wonderful to see a group of guys go against stereotype.

Sounds like these countries have a ton in common. I wonder if Russians also cannibalize their albinos for magic powers. Double magic for gay albinos.

The entire You Can Play project was started by hockey people, specifically the Burke family. Patrick Burke was a scout for the Philidelphia Flyers; his father Brian used to be General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leaves and is now with the Calgary Flames; and the project was started in memory of his brother Brendan Burke, who managed the University of Miami Redhawks.

Brendan came out publicly in 2009, was publicly supported by his father (who has marched in the Toronto Pride parade along with his family), and then died in a car accident in 2010. Brendan was one of the big pushers behind dealing with homophobia and the locker room talk that can trigger it, and so after he died, the foundation was formed to continue the work.

Considering that Brian Burke was also the general manager of the US Men’s Olympic hockey team for the 2010 Winter Olympics… he’s already got connections on the Olympics side of things, and so it is not at all surprising that the family is getting involved. It would be far more surprising if they weren’t at this point.

The Russian government’s bold efforts to protect children and society …

Protect children from what? Knowledge that there are gay people? Just how does that “protect” them? They never quite get around to explaining that. Is it that gayness is so attractive that just knowing about it makes it irresistible?

I know what they mean when they say “protect society.” They want to protect a particular society where religious bigots get to discriminate against anyone they consider to be “sinners.” They’re in a panic because they see that society in the US is slipping away from them (though far from gone completely) and that all the developed western nations are well ahead of us in doing away with their self-righteous privilege.

Reading this, I was struck with the (somewhat obvious) thought that if these governments and other groups did not hate on gays to begin with, there probably wouldn’t be any visible support for the cause. The bigots could ironically get their “clean, wholesome” (by which they mean – no outward expression of gay support) atmosphere quite easily. These folks should consider the fact that nobody disrupts the Olympics to protest black civil rights (any more). Nor do they disrupt the Olympics to protest womens’s suffrage. And ponder on why. Want no disruption of the Olypmics associated with gay rights? Its easy to accomplish.

I have no comment. I’m too busy being baffled by patriotic, America-loving Americans cheering Russians, comparing them favoratively with Nigeria and Uganda. Common enemies united by common hatreds. It’s like we’re headed towards some awful Asshole Singularity.

The Brits characterized their country’s closeness with the US as “the Special Relationship”. US social conservatives might wish to co-opt that term to describe their new-found love for the Putin administration.

While hockey still suffers from jockism it’s a lot more progressive than most other professional sports, its seed population of middle class Canadians and Europeans is probably to thank for this.

Yes, that’s exactly what they believe. In their minds, every young man is just one Village People medley away from jumping into a pile of hot, sweaty man flesh. And every young woman is one Indigo Girls song away from growing her armpit hair out and replacing her entire wardrobe with flannel shirts and Bierkenstocks. Satan is constantly trying to lure them into a life of sin and crude stereotypes. They only way to keep them “safe” is by preventing them from ever finding out that sex is anything but something you only do after marriage only in the man on top get it over with quick followed by hours of praying for forgiveness position

Though I should note that I too love the idea of a big tough team sport like hockey standing up to homophobia.
