S.E. Cupp is like nails on a blackboard to me and this video, made to promote CNN’s relaunch of Crossfire, demonstrates why perfectly. In it, she explains why she can be both a conservative and an atheist and sounds utterly vapid doing so. Especially inane statements like this:
I know that it strikes a lot of people as odd that I could be both conservative and an atheist. To me it never seemed like a contradiction. Like most believers, I think murder’s pretty terrible.
Yeah, unlike liberals and other atheists, who think murder is ripping good fun. Seriously, who takes this staggering mediocrity seriously?
Like most believers, I agree with pretty much all of the ten commandments.
Really? Which ones do you agree with, other than the ones that everyone agrees with, like murder and theft? Do you agree with the first several, which are purely religious commands? Do you, as an atheist, believe that we should keep the sabbath holy? Or did you really just mean “I agree with a few of them that everyone else agrees with too”? If so, why didn’t you just say that?
She spends most of the rest of it trying to convince people that she’s one of the good atheists, not one that is “militant, hostile, confrontational [or] dismissive” because she “envies” religious people. Sorry, I call bullshit. Remember, this is the same person who said a year ago that she would never vote for an atheist because atheists think religious people are crazy and don’t have anything to restrain their actions:
And you know what? I would never vote for an atheist president. Ever… Because I do not think that someone who represents 5 to 10 percent of the population should be representing and thinking that everyone else in the world is crazy, but me…
I like that there is a check, OK? That there‘s a person in the office that doesn’t think he’s bigger than the state… I like religion being a check and knowing that my president goes home every night addressing someone above him and not thinking all the power resides right here… Atheists don’t have that.
Honestly, I don’t believe she’s an atheist, even a self-loathing one. I think she likes to pretend that she is because it gets her attention. It makes her stand out the way a black conservative stands out and gets far more attention than they deserve because of it. She’s making herself a token, on purpose. And when the attention runs out, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if she has a sudden “conversion,” which will make her the darling of the Christian right as an example of a “famous atheist” who discovered the truth of God, proving that all atheists are wrong.
