Robertson: Gay Men Cut Each Other to Transmit HIV

Pat Robertson delivered another one of his bizarre, fact-free diatribes in response to a reader question, this one so embarrassing that they edited it out of the show when they posted it online. This time he claimed that gay men wear sharp rings to deliberately cut one another in order to transmit HIV.

ROBERTSON: You know what they do in San Francisco, some in the gay community there they want to get people, so if they got the stuff they’ll have a ring, you shake hands, and the ring’s got a little thing where you cut your finger.

MEEUWSEN: Really?

ROBERTSON: Really. It’s that kind of vicious stuff, which would be the equivalent of murder.

To show you just how embarrassed the network is by this, they not only edited it out of the show when they posted it online, they filed a false copyright claim against Right Wing Watch for putting it up (which is clearly covered under Fair Use). So RWW put it up on Vimeo and they did the same thing to get that one taken down. So now you can watch it on Daily Motion. Seriously, if he didn’t own the whole thing, he would have been thrown off a long time ago.

I’m not so sure about that. Mr. Robertson is a perfect example of a celebrity Liar for Jesus®. One who is celebrated because he’s happily willing to express the fear, hatred, and delusions of standard-issue conservative Christians in his defamation of those non-celebrity conservative Christians hate and fear.

There are times that Robertson is so embarrassing, so far removed from reality, that even his own people have to disown what he says.

Tell me Mr Robertson, have you ever visited the planet Earth?

  4. colnago80:

This doesn’t even make any medical sense. AFAIK, there has to be an exchange of bodily fluids to transmit HIV. If so, a cut induced via a handshake won’t do the job.

Unfortunately Mr. Robertson’s understanding of one group of humans is very much of this earth. That perspective has made him both rich and influential. “Let’er rip” can be very freeing and lucrative.

Robertson doesn’t have employees any more. He has his own…operators.

My theory is that he died long ago. His operators occasionally give him a shot of Reanimation Serum, point him in the right direction, and hope.

Hope he doesn’t say something too dumb and hope he doesn’t try to eat their brains. Again.

Hard as it is to believe, Robertson became a billionaire with his act, The fundie tribe of xians have very low standards for truth and entertainment.

You could say Robertson is showing signs of age related cognitive impairment. The trouble is, what he is doing today is what he was doing thirty years ago.

He has a long standing history of spreading hate and saying bizarre things. One time he accused the mainstream Protestants of being the church of the Antichrist. One of his frequent targets is women with college degrees. And he did predict the Apocalypse to happen in the 1980′s and was wrong.

Ed, it’s worse than that. Robertson meant that they wear the special rings to deliberately infect STRAIGHT people.

    wikipedia Pat Robertson controversies:

On January 14, 1991, on The 700 Club, Pat Robertson attacked a number of Protestant denominations when he declared: “You say you’re supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing.

Nonsense. I don’t have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist.”[6]

Ecumenicalism is a bad word to the fundies.

Religious animosities still exist. These days it is based mostly on politics and above all, on money.

The fundie pool of money donated for their leader’s ultra-rich lifestyles is huge, but there really isn’t such a thing as too much money. Money donated to the Methodists is money Robertson can’t use to buy another private jet or mansion.

Robertson may be a Zombie but he is a very rich Zombie.

PS: The wikpedia article has a collection of Robertson’s greatest hits. It’s amusing in an appallingly warped way.

He has described feminism as a “socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”[19]

    One more for the road.

Fuck you too Pat. I don’t think I’m going to join your cult very soon.

You know what they say, “You can never be too rich or too ignorant”. Pat’s both. It’s the Meritocracy in action.

I think as theists get pushed back under the dung pile from where they arose…many more utterly insane claims regarding teh gheys, atheists, dem wimmin’s issues and the liberal elite, not forgetting Obama and democrats, will be made with straight faces and hands out for donations to fight the evil.

They are becoming ever more desperate and lonely, diminishing numbers, decreases in popularity generally, sex scandals and bogus claims of rapture, not to mention ever more brain dead ridiculous dogma’s, and ignorance, intolerances, hatreds becoming visible where before they were all carefully hidden away…their house is crumbling they know it, we know it.

The only thing they have left is to try and raise a jeebus sunbeam legion of rampaging xtians intent on eradicating that which scares, spooks, irritates, and confuses them.
Last chance saloon and all that and they seem to be putting it all on the final flick of the deity dice.

They are the ones that really want an armed uprising, because armed uprisings and the ensuing bloodshed chaos and mayhem offer opportunities and situations where all of a sudden god seems to become rather more present.
These are the whispering ear worms that encourage front-line political animals to snuffle in the dung for excuses to claim, or for suggesting, the south will rise again…blah de blah de blah…or to regain their sovereignty from central government or a dozen other lame dog whistles.

Except this is not a political aspiration as they try and frame it as…it is 100% xtian in origin and suggestion, they survive in chaos, and most cults prosper…they dearly want to prosper again!

So lies are the tool of choice…they all do it.

But the lies are getting ever more preposterous and fantastical as their fear and desperation climbs the scale.
As there seems no real sign of a general uprising of god’s own or indeed any pending change in their fortunes.

Their desperation now is approaching fever pitch it will hit the event horizon at this particular game because the more repugnant and bizarre they claim the more the audience will switch off realizing they are being told utter bullshite and are being conned by folks they used to respect…it will be a while xtians are not the brightest of bunnies but still the tipping point is nearer now then it was a decade ago!

And much nearer now that a major cretin in the valley of the shadow is starting to be seen as ridiculous, even amongst his peers…to the point where they actively attempt to edit his public insanities!…

Just a matter of time now!

Right Wing Watch has Robertson’s notpology:

I was asked by a viewer whether she had a right to leave her church because she had been asked to transport an elderly man who had AIDS and about whose condition she had not been informed. My advice was that the risk of contagion in those circumstances was quite low and that she should continue to attend the church and not worry about the incident.

In my own experience, our organization sponsored a meeting years ago in San Francisco where trained security officers warned me about shaking hands because, in those days, certain AIDS-infected activists were deliberately trying to infect people like me by virtue of rings which would cut fingers and transfer blood.

I regret that my remarks had been misunderstood, but this often happens because people do not listen to the context of remarks which are being said. In no wise [sic] were my remarks meant as an indictment of the homosexual community or, for that fact, to those infected with this dreadful disease.

His children and grandchildren will be keeping a close eye on things. If Pat’s statements ever cause income to drop they’ll shunt him off to the hospital quick smart. No way are they going to let old grandad fritter away their inheritance. While he’s making money though; he’s OK.

So, in context, what did he mean when he said that gays deliberately infect people with HIV via special rings?
