Harvey: Gays ‘Absorb Personality of Others’

Even among her fellow anti-gay bigots in the Christian right, Linda Harvey manages to distinguish herself with her inane statements on the subject. On her radio show recently she said that gay people seek “to absorb the personality and identity of another person, even someone of the same sex because the vacant feeling inside is so great.” Uh, what?

    They are Pod people?

Who knew that movie was a documentary!!!

We are missing a few details here. What do the gays do after “absorbing someone else’s personality?” Does their target lose their own or is it just duplicated? Can they fix it up, put in new curtains and so on?

I’m seeing the potential here for a huge research project, one that could employ armies of fundie scientists and take decades.

Well, at least LInda Harvey and the other fundies are safe.

No one would want their personalities!!!

    Even Pod people have standards.

Yes, people who are the object of persecution often feel out of place and isolated. This can lead to low self-esteem and a heightened desire to belong. Such people may try to mimic those they perceive as having the acceptance they seek, or at least attempt to hide their otherness. In homosexuals this is often referred to as being in the closet. You know what really helps, supporting the victim. Befriend them without judgment. Encourage them to be themselves and to trust that they will be loved and accepted. Show them that bigots seeking to make people feel less than worthy are the one with a problem. Like most bullies, bigots are ruled by their fear and insecurity. They will seek to drag others down to pull themselves up. Do not let them. Embrace your otherness, celebrate your uniqueness and they can never have power over you again.

That’s not even internally consistent magic. How do two “empty” gay people absorb each other’s personality? Shouldn’t they be hunting down straight people and sucking them dry? There’s a reason vampires don’t hunt each other.

Imagine what a state Harvey will be in if she ever sees Aliens.

She probably believes they are absorbing straight people and turning them gay.

Sounds like Linda Harvey thinks the prototypical gay person is Jeffrey Dahmer.

Also, someone might have taken her to see Silence of the Lambs.

So Harvey is basically saying that non-heteronormals are actually channeling Leonard Zelig?

One of our residents psychologists can probably comment on this more authoritatively, but I believe this is based on a (now discredited) hypothesis for why some people are gay from back when homosexuality was in the DSM. The idea was that a gay person has a poor sense of self so they seek relationships with people who they can imitate, while healthy heterosexual people seek relationships with people who complement themselves.

What’s the big deal? I’ve been doing this for years, and I’m not even gay!
