Rios Repeats Right Wing Lies. Film at 11.

This is probably going to come as a big shock to you, so you might want to sit down before reading it. Sandy Rios of the American Family Association is repeating tired old right wing lies that were debunked years ago but continue to circulate in emails sent between morons.

You may remember that President Obama ordered the resettling of thousands of Palestinians right after he became president, he brought them over at our expense and I don’t know if they all went to Michigan but tons of them did. Of course before that Michigan, certainly the Detroit area is just brimming with Islamists; it’s pretty frightening actually. I think it is frightening because they are Islamists and they are in the heart of our country, and now they are qualified for food stamps as well. We know that in Michigan, Muslim men have multiple wives even though we don’t allow that in this country. They do still practice it so they go in and sign up for food assistance…. Is Arabic going to be the new language—how many languages are we going to have that are going to be officially acknowledged in America?

No, President Obama did not order any resettling of Palestinians in the United States. Factcheck and Snopes both debunked it long ago. And no, Michigan is not “brimming with Islamists.” Dearborn does have a large Arab population, but a sizable number of them are Christians, not Muslims (mostly Chaldeans). In fact, almost two-thirds of Arabs in the United States are Christian.

All of them. Why, is there some penalty or cost for acknowledging a language?

    eric,

The problem is that Obama is going to force anybody who does customer service to list all of the officially acknowledged languages before you can talk to their phone robots: “Press 1 for Merican, Press 2 for Messican, Press 3 for Hindustanian…”

No, but there is a cost for learning a language. Considering how phobic many USAians are about any language other than English, this could be a major stressor. But in reality, there is NO language “officially” acknowledged anyway. English is not the official language of the US, nor Spanish, Deutsch leider auch nicht!

A lot of hysteria, covering quite a few right-wing hissy points. Nice job, Sandy!

    Actually, yes.

Typically an “official language” means that any and all government publications must be made available in that language, and that government business is conducted in that language.

If you’re going to provide government services in multiple languages, the expenses actually do add up pretty quickly. Not only dual publication of many documents, but maintaining qualified language speakers in many offices.

The example I can give from personal experience isn’t exactly right, because it stems from a constitutional right rather than any “official language” rule, but the costs are similar.

Although the Supreme Court has never formally said so, if you are criminally charged and do not speak english, many appellate courts and state courts have said that due process requires providing you an interpreter. Legal interpreters must be certified. Through a peculiar situation I ended up involved in a case where we needed a Tagalog interpreter for a woman who spoke Tagalog as a first language and had very limited command of Spanish and English. We ended up having to fly an interpreter in from California at pretty significant expense.

The problems is the Arabs in America who are Christian are not the right kind of Christian. So, they might as well be Muslim or even Islamic.

Well, it is more cost effective to resettle Palestinians by the ton, so if they are going to make up crap, it’s nice to see that they cast Obama in a thrifty light.

Dearborn’s becoming a beacon to Arab people happened years prior to Mr. Obama becoming a household name.

I don’t know about other areas but bank teller machines in Northern Virginia have several languages, including Vietnamese, French, Spanish, Chinese, etc. in addition to English.

Rios: “You may remember that President Obama ordered…”

    * The resettling of thousands of Palestinians right after he became president
    * Death panels
    * The confiscation of all guns now in private hands
    * Sharia law in Texas and Oklahoma
    * A hamburger with Dijon mustard. (The cad!)

If you do remember any of these things, seek professional help immediately. These are false memories. (The last item happened, but it is no cause for the alarm the right wing seeks to promote.)

… President Obama ordered the resettling of thousands of Palestinians …

    Sorry, Rios, that was me.

A friend said, “I think the Palestinians ought to have a state of their own.”

I said, “Yes. How about Texas?”

Isn’t getting the Palestinians out of Palestine just what the religious right wants? First you re-establish the borders of Solomon’s empire–ignoring the fact that Israel’s borders, with or without Palestine, don’t match any version of the historical borders. Next, all the world’s Jews have to move there. Not just the majority, which they only finally achieved in the last decade. Third, they have to destroy all the mosques on or in the temple mount and rebuild the Temple. That starts the countdown to the second coming when all the Jews except for 144,00 converts will be killed. Yay! We support Israel! All you Jews dying will bring about our salvation!
