The Worldnetdaily’s Journalistic Standards

The Worldnetdaily has published an article that reveals perfectly their complete lack of journalistic integrity. The article, written by someone named Steve Peacock, is entitled “Ex-Obama employer gets Kenyan contract: Prez brings home bacon in midst of Chicago corruption probe.” But the article shows no connection at all between Obama and the contract, the contract or the corruption probe or Obama and the corruption probe.

A no-bid contract to assess a $48 million Kenyan youth program has been awarded to the University of Chicago, where President Barack Obama taught constitutional law for 12 years.

This discovery coincides with the federal embezzlement indictment of Quinshaunta R. Golden, former key aide to Eric E. Whitaker, the one-time U. of C. Medical Center executive vice president and former colleague of Michelle Obama.

Whitaker is “one of President Barack Obama’s closest friends,” according to the Chicago Tribune. He is not a target of the federal investigation, and has pledged his full cooperation, according to the Tribune…

The university’s National Opinion Research Center, or NORC – which is not involved in the investigation – will receive $650,000 to assess the Yes Youth Can!, or YYC, project in Kenya, according to contracting documents that WND discovered via routine database research…

Unrelated to the NORC contract or to Yes Youth Can!, Golden was indicted for bribery, theft and fraud for allegedly embezzling “about $433,000 in state health department funds,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

And…therefore…what? The “corruption probe” involves Golden embezzling money from an agency that Whitaker used to run when she was one of his underlings. It has absolutely nothing to do with Obama and even less to do with the University of Chicago getting a contract to assess a Kenyan program. Nor is there even an attempt to connect Obama to the university getting that contract. This is journalism for 5-year olds, not serious adults. The three things they’re trying to tie together as though they were connected have precisely nothing to do with one another — except that Obama has a vague connection to all three (he taught at the university long ago, he knows someone who was once the boss of someone who has been indicted for embezzlement, and his father was Kenyan).

But wait, hasn’t the Worldnetdaily been pushing Joel Gilbert’s ridiculous claim that Obama isn’t Kenyan at all because his real father is Frank Marshall Davis, not Barack Obama, Sr.? Oh what tangled webs we weave when we’re desperately trying to find anything at all that makes our political enemies look bad with no regard for evidence or consistency.

But for the WingNutDaily’s audience, simply mentioning Obama’s name in vague proximity with any remotely bad thing is as good as a conviction. WND does exactly as much journalism as is needed to make its readership happy.

What? No way to work the Muslim Brotherhood in there somehow? Worldnutdaily is slipping.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks funny as “net” instead of “nut”?

Really, they could just do this and their readers probably wouldn’t even notice:

    I am your best friend’s former manager’s ex-law professor.

Bah, it was funnier when Mel Brooks did it in Spaceballs.

I think you’re unfairly maligning five-year-olds, Ed. This is more like journalism for adults who still think Bob the Builder is a good guide to the ins and outs of construction.

    Kenya. Chicago. Corruption. Obama.

What, do I have to draw you a map?

Applause for tubi; I’m working in inDesign as we speak and snorted at that one.

The most recent episode of The Newsroom included an excellent (and highly entertaining) slam on WND.

…also, the WND goes ballistic over their portrayal in that episode:

This is actually a fairly common game for conservative pundits, really, though WND is the most blatant about it.

Consider John Kass, an actual columnist for a real, live newspaper, who often gets his analysis of political corruption in Chicago right on the money. Ever since Obama won the Democratic primary, Kass has been almost constitutionally unable to write the name “Obama” without including the name “Rezko” in the same paragraph. (Rezko’s a classic Chicago political fixer who got busted awhile back. His big tie to Obama is that when they were neighbors, he sold part of his parcel of land to Obama so that the Prez could expand his property. Problem is, the asking price for the sale was… market value of that portion of the land at that time. And no one can find a concrete example of Obama doing Rezko any favors since then. So… it’s not a link at all.)

Really, it’s one of the worst cases of Presidential Derangement Syndrome I’ve seen yet.

I was curious about how bad it could be and what the comments would be like so I read it all so you don’t have to. I couldn’t make it through the comments after reading the whole thing though.

I’m dumber for having read it.

It’s so difficult to follow that I posted a summation in their comment section, which I’m sure will be pulled by the moderators soon enough. In case your curious, I’ll post it here. Trust me, this is shorter than the original and nearly covers everything the author mentioned.
    ———————————————————-

So let me get this straight. in a story titled “Ex-Obama employer gets Kenyan contract” we learn that:

A woman named Golden who worked for a guy named Whitaker who, nearly 10 years ago, worked with Michelle Obama at a hospital managed by an Institution where Barack Obama was employed nearly 10 years ago by an entirely unrelated Division, was indicted for a crime which her Uncle, U.S. Rep Danny Davis is not tied to and which is unrelated to another crime alleged to have been perpetrated by a woman who is the daughter of a pastor who lead a church that President Obama attended a decade ago.
Whitaker, President Obama, Michelle Obama and Danny Davis have also not been implicated in the crime alleged to have been perpetrated by the daughter of the pastor at the church President Obama attended 10 years ao.

NORC, an organization which is not connected to Golden, Whitaker, President Obama, Michelle Obama, the Division or Hospital the afore mentioned were or are employed, has been awarded a no-bid contract to continue the work they earlier performed evaluating the efficacy of a program run in Kenya by USAID, an organization with no connections to any of the persons or organizations mentioned in this story other than NORC.

Whitaker, who has not been implicated in any of the crimes mentioned so far, is said to be “best friends” with President Obama by the Chicago Tribune.
Along with Whitaker, President Obama’s Senior Advisor Valerie Jarret who once sat on the board the University of Chicago Medical Center, Ausin Goolsby, a current instructor at the entirely unrelated University of Chicago Booth School of Business and former Economic Advisor to President Obama, and Former Senior Obama adviser and campaign strategist David Axelrod, a U. of C. alumnus who last year returned to the university to lead its Institute of Politics are all also not tied to the aforementioned alleged crimes.

Sean Hannity once asked Austin Goolsby if he was crazy.

OK, it all makes sense now.

    BTW..
Not to pick nits.. but you should probably change the title.
Though Faculty and Staff payroll checks say “University of Chicago” on them and payroll payments are processed centrally, It’s probably as valid to say the College of Law and Hospital employees are employed and their respective organizations. Their salaries are drawn from those organization’s budgets. The University of Chicago, like many similar institutions, is in many ways structured more like a number of subsidiaries than one big corporation.

The University of Chicago Hospital system in particular is structurally quite independent from the University [as is the Radiology Department to limit liability to the University in the case of an accidental radiological incident].
In an effort to be as accurate as possible, you should consider something like:
“An organization operating at the same University which formerly employed the Obamas receives no-bid contract to continue evaluation of Kenyan program run by American-based charity.. and several unrelated criminal indictments”

ooops.. I flubbed the end. I wanted my suggested revised title to read more like..
“Organization operating at the same University where the Obamas were once employed by unrelated Divisons, receives no-bid contract to continue evaluation of Kenyan program run by American-based charity.. and several unrelated criminal indictments”

If you people don’t see the obvious connections between these various points, then you are blind.
