King Continues Absurd Defense of Racist Remarks

Rep. Steve King isn’t just an ignorant git, he’s also someone who is clearly incapable of ever admitting that he said anything wrong. And he continues to offer the most irrational and dumbest defense of his recent racist remarks about Mexican immigrants. For the record, let’s recount what he said:

“For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

So according to King, for every smart Mexican immigrant there’s 100 drug runners. And if you criticize him for that, you’re just defending drug dealers:

“If I insulted anybody, it could have only been drug smugglers, just the drug smugglers, and I probably didn’t do an adequate job of insulting drug smugglers, but the people who want to disparage what I said and what they’re really doing is defending drug smugglers,” King told KTIV.

Right. And for every intelligent Republican congressman, there’s 100 alcoholic rapists. And if you criticize me for saying that, you’re obviously just defending alcoholic rapists. Right, Mr. King?

Where in that is an insult to drug runners? Is it the claim that a lot of them are Mexican?

His “clarification” is just as bad as the original insult!

  2. Phillip IV says

It’s really remarkable – given the level of the original remark, one would have assumed it was impossible for King to dig himself in any deeper, but somehow he managed, and continues to manage.

I probably didn’t do an adequate job of insulting drug smugglers

Yeah, you should really work on that. Pro Tip: Try to insult them to their faces, you own calves could do with the resulting workout.

Clearly he’s no true republican: he hates free market capitalism!

Love it! I previously criticized the left for misquoting King but this is perfect!

See, all the people who King is targeting – Republican donors and primary voters -take away from this is that King said illegal immigrants are bad.

  7. Pierce R. Butler says

Please remember, people, there are two Steve Kings.

One is a master of the macabre whose words send chills of horror down millions of spines; the other is a novelist and movie-maker.

  8. scienceavenger says

Ignorant, obviously. But racist? How? “X% of illegal Mexican immigrants are drug smugglers” is legitimate statement, and is true for some small value of X. King’s X is just ridiculously high. He says nothing about anyone’s genetics. That makes him an idiot, not a racist.

  9. says

@9. All women are bad at math. Obviously, some women are bad at math. My number is just too high. I’m not sexist, just mistaken.

I’m left confused as to what you think racism is. Do you think his disregard for the facts was a simple mistake and not because of racism? Either that, or I missed sarcasm somehow.

    @9

Ask King to estimate X for the number of Canadians coming across the northern border. Surely there is some X that represents those that are carrying. I suspect his assessment of their numbers is far less, or even nil.

There is one major difference between Canadians and Mexicans.

There is one major difference between Canadians and Mexicans.

Yeah. You’ll never catch a Mexican eating poutine.

  12. scienceavenger says

@10 But he didn’t say “all Mexicans are drug smugglers”. I’d agree that would be bigoted. He’s talking about those that illegally cross our borders, hardly a random sampling of the group. It’s going to be a lot poorer for starters.

I think racism is pretty much what common usage dictates, and I’m not saying King isn’t a racist. In fact, were I asked to bet, that’s where my wager would go. I’m just saying badmouthing illegal immigrants isn’t ipso facto racist.

@11 Awesome suggestion, you should send that to the major news outlets. I for one would break out the popcorn to see King answer, especially given that the realitt may have the Canadian illegals even more prone to that activity than Mexicans, given the different legal statuses of various drugs in those countries. On my last trip north I was made to understand that there are many well-trod ski paths in the wilderness going south profitably…

He’s talking about the ones who came here as small children with their undocumented parents and grew up in the USA.

The daily show did a segment on this, showing how big 75 pounds of marijuana would actually be…

scienceavenger@9, surely you’re not claiming that racists didn’t exist until genetics was established as a science?
