Anonymous Republican Blocks Leahy Bill

Sen. Patrick Leahy was hoping to get a vote on a bill he proposed that would require a warrant instead of a mere subpoena before law enforcement could access our online communications, but an anonymous Republican senator put a hold on the bill to prevent that from happening.

An anonymous Republican senator has delayed a vote on legislation that would require police to obtain a warrant before accessing emails and other online messages…

A Leahy aide said the senator will continue to work with Republicans to address their concerns. The Senate could pass the legislation without unanimous support, but it would take up valuable floor time to override a filibuster.

It is unclear which Republican or Republicans objected to the bill, S. 607.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, has expressed concern about how the bill would affect civil regulatory investigations, but Beth Levine, a Grassley spokeswoman, said he was not the one to place a hold on the bill.

I guess the anonymous Republican thinks his privacy is important. Too bad he doesn’t give a damn about anyone else’s.

    In a nutshell.

GAH – Why is the government so averse to using the rules that currently exist in order to actually DO SOMETHING for once?

“We’d vote on this but it’d take too long and use up too much floor time that we use for not voting on other legislation.”

Why would they put a hold on it for any reason besides grandstanding? Wouldn’t they want attention for that?

    Ed:

Is “gutless fucking douchebag, asswipe toady to the Koch family and whatever profit center they own that makes money from the current state of affairs” off limits, too?

Somebody needs to clue that shithead in; you can’t be a “martyr” for the GOP, if you’re anonymous.

Why the hell is this even possible? What’s the damn point of having a Senate at all if any one of them can just decide that something’s not up for a vote, and that’s that?

Forgive my ignorance, but I really want to know why we do not return to the REAL filibuster where they have to speak nonstop to prevent a vote. If the GOP is going to filibuster everything Obama supports, make them work for it. Make them choose their battles, fight the important stuff, rather than give them a simple lol, no button.

The Constitution already requires that the police get a warrant.

What the deuce?! Any one US Senator can ‘filibuster’ by anonymously saying “stop”?!! What idiots thought that would be a good idea? It’s no wonder that that moribund institution can’t get anything done.

“Privacy for me, not for thee.”

What the hell are they talking about? This Congress has done almost exactly nothing. What little they have done has been very nearly useless in terms of dealing with any of the problems government is supposed to deal with.

Ooh, I like that, but what about Warren/Franken ’16? I think I’d like that even better.

Another example of Small Government ™, folks! Small enough to fit in your email inbox, and small enough that one anonymous asshole is all it takes to fuck things up.

If you believe something is wrong, you stand up and say so. This anonymous senator is just a fucking chicken shit.
