Lane: Car Bombs Will Show God’s Mercy

David Lane, the new kid on the evangelical block introducing Republican candidates to evangelical pastors, went on the Steve Deace show and delivered one of the weirdest bits of babble you’ll ever hear. Asked about America’s future, he says we’ll have car bombs in Los Angeles and Iowa — and that will be God showing mercy on us.

Deace: What’s the next twenty years going to look like?

Lane: There’s two options, I think. Number one, if we don’t turn back to him. [Eric] Metaxas in his Bonheoffer book said that in 1522, [Martin] Luther translated the Greek to the German, and in 1534 he translated the Hebrew to the German, and he said it caused a cataclysmic explosion in Germany that birthed the Protestant Reformation for four hundred years. In 1933-45, twelve years, I assume, I have no idea, I’m assuming God said, ‘I’m done.’ So here we are, kill 60 million babies, red ink as far as the eye can see, homosexuals praying at the Inauguration. If we get mercy, that’s why we started this by talking about me coming to Christ thirty-five years ago, one of the wildest men who ever lived; I deserved judgment, I got mercy. If America gets mercy, I believe — this doesn’t sound good — I think the process of mercy looks like probably car bombs in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Des Moines, Iowa. I think if we get mercy the process is going to be a very painful process. If we get judgment like Nazi Germany, I’m assuming we go to rebel, and God says ‘I’m done.’ So I think that’s where we are, I think we’re at the fork in the road, and if you can believe this I’m actually hopeful.

The fact that Deace did anything other than point and laugh at that point tells you just how reality-impaired he is as well.

Clearly not worth the effort to decode. Blather for a modern nuthouse where the listeners are watching teevee too.

  2. some bastard on the net says

Well, yeah, car-bombs definitely count as mercy. After all, God could just start chuckin’ nukes!

You foolish atheists just don’t seem to appreciate what you have!

Sounds like David Lane is advocating xian terrorism.

Xian terrorism has been a problem in the USA for decades. 2/3’s of all terrorist attacks since 9/11 have involved fundie xians and/or right wing extremists.

US xianity is dying, killed off by the David Lane kooks faction. Most of them know it by now. Thjis is the last chance for fundie xian death cultists to do some real damage to the USA. They know that too.

The next few decades are going to be ugly. It remains to be seen how ugly.

This was the result of some Christian youth group’s game of Mad Libs, right? One that came out particularly silly and incoherent? Either that or someone was having a stroke. Gotta be.

  5. raven says

As US xianity shrinks itself down small enough to go drown in the bathtub, it looks like it is becoming more extreme.

Makes sense, as people filter out of the cults in order of best and brightest first, who is left but the dumb, crazy, and violent?

David Lane comes across as a hate filled, incoherent Theocrat. Which he is, and one who openly hates the US and its government.. In most old mainline Protestant churches, he would be kicked out and get a no contact restraining order. These days he is described as a fundie xian leader.

This doesn’t make the future of US xianity look good. It’s a negative vicious circle. The more extreme and violent US xianity gets, the more people want out of it and want it to go back under its rock and stay there.

Is he trying to say that the rise of the Nazi party was caused by the translation of the Bible in German?

    What the what?

  7. raven says

Ironically, there probably will be a car bomb or two somewhere in the USA in the next 20 years. And mass murders like Aurora and Sandy Hook. Also fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

There have always been people who will carry out violence for their cause or just because they are crazy. And natural disasters aren’t called natural for no reason.

David Lane isn’t actually saying anything meaningful. It’s just words strung together and designed to trigger the fear, hate, and wallet opening reflexes of the faithful.

PS So I can be a prophet too. There will be large wildfires in the USA this summer. Droughts will occur and also flooding. In 6 months frozen water will fall from the sky, and most plants will either die or appear dead in a cataclysm called….winter.

Why pick on Los Angeles and Des Moines, leaving out the fuckken born agains’ favorite town, San Francisco?

In the Dead Milkmen song “Stuart”, they say this:

    Now, Stuart, if you look
At the soil around any large US city
    There’s a big underground
    Homosexual population

Des Moines, Iowa, for an example
Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart
    You can’t build on it
You can’t grow anything in it

    The government says
    “It’s due to poor farming”
    But I know what’s
    Really going on, Stuart

    I know it’s the queers
They’re in it with the aliens
    They’re building landing strips
For gay Martians, I swear to God

  10. sigurd jorsalfar says

@11 Because there are no good xristians left in San Fran to set off those car bombs? But there might be one or two left in DC and LA to do it, and definitely more than enough in Des Moines?

What does this even mean? I’ve read and re-read it and there appears to be no link between his ramblings about martin Luther to car bombs in LA

Martin Luther gave us the Thirty Years War — a third of the population of Europe dead in the war (mostly because the armies were looking for food and recreation) and more in the epidemics that followed it. By comparison Hitler was a piker.

The connection to car bombs is that the Islamists and earlier Christianists who used car (or truck) bombs are also pikers compared to the wave of mass murder that he expects his followers to unleash when they (like the current Islamists) throw a tantrum over the advance of civilization and rationality.

    Re D. C. Sessions @ #16

I was under the impression that the 30 Years War was due to the Catholics trying to suppress the Protestant heresy. I seem to recall that the various Catholic armies of mercenaries under Tilly and Wallenstein did most of the attacking, at least until both were defeated by Gustavus Adolphus at Breitenfeld and Lutzen respectively.

  14. says

FWIW. A car bomb in Mr. Lane’s car MIGHT be taken as some sort of message from GOD. Said message being:

“Hey, bub, here’s a big ol’ cup of STFU!”.

  15. D. C. Sessions says

I was under the impression that the 30 Years War was due to the Catholics trying to suppress the Protestant heresy.

And would that have happened without Luther?

(Actually, when you look at who was supporting who, it looks a lot more like the usual dynastic grab for land, money, power. The religious issues were convenient, though.)

Gustav Adolph was leading mercenaries, too, and all of those armies supported themselves by looting the countryside. With, of course, the routine atrocities. Can’t jepoardize the morale of the troops by restricting their rape, murder, and burn benefits after all.

the Thirty Years War — a third of the population of Europe dead in the war – D.C. Sessions

Nah. Are you confusing it with the Black Death? A third of the population of Germany, possibly, and significant numbers in the Czech lands, Italy, France and Spain. There were of course no censuses in 17th century Europe, and I can’t find a particularly good graph online, but here’s one where you can see a blip downwards, but nothing remotely like a third. And, while there was certainly an important religious element, it was also a dynastic war between the Habsburgs and the Bourbons – both Catholic.

  18. D. C. Sessions says

And, while there was certainly an important religious element, it was also a dynastic war between the Habsburgs and the Bourbons – both Catholic.

I think I mentioned that. It also slopped over into the Low Countries (where Richelieu also dropped money to keep things stirred and distract Spain) and to a lesser extent Italy (same trick, same objective.)

  19. kyoseki says

Los Angeles’ greatest defense against a terrorist attack is that it’s so goddamned spread out, you’d have to employ a huge number of bombs in order to do any real damage.

On the other hand, if you jackknifed a few big rigs at a handful of freeway interchanges, you could bring the entire city to it’s knees in the space of half an hour.

… or just wait for it to rain, which achieves mostly the same thing.

That’s a keeper. Now, I have to work on delivering it with an absolutely straight face and asking the rubepublicans whether it was a comment by Reagan, Bush or Santorum.
