Rick Perry’s Utter Cluelessness

In the wake of the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin, Rick Perry went on TV and declared the American criminal justice system is “colorblind” and that “we have the best judicial system in the world.” Coming from a man who practically fondles himself when he gets to put someone to death in Texas, one of the worst and most pervasively racist systems in the entire world, this is hardly surprising. But it is appalling.

Ole AC/DC Rick is thinking about running for president in 2016.

While if he fails in ’16, he can try again in ’20. And you know what they say, “The third time is the, uh, umm, huh, uh……”

“we have the best judicial system in the world.”

These are the same sick fucks who say “we have the best health care system in the world” and then cheer the suggestion of leaving people to die.

    Coincidence? Hell no!

But the justice system *is* colorblind. Especially in Texas. All it sees is black and white.

So…by colorblind, he means it doesn’t matter if someone is Latino or white, as long as they are shooting black kids?

Is supporting Zimmerman the GOP’s plan to score the Latino vote?

To be fair, he may have noticed that poor white people are often treated poorly, and rich black people are often treated well. He’s using that to conclude that the justice system is biased based on wealth, and that’s the way it should be. Rich people get to have better stuff.

Sitting in the Governor’s office I guess it’s hard to see the injustice of the justice system he runs.

I think one of the most important spotlights the Zimmerman case has cast on injustices in the criminal justice system actually has nothing to do with the incident itself – it has brought attention to the the phenomenon of overcharging. You could practically hear the howling during charge conference when it was decided to include an instruction on manslaughter. This is the way lesser included offenses work in the state of Florida, and many pro-Zimmerman commentators were shocked by this and denounced it as unfair.

Now, it’s true that Florida law pretty much gives prosecutors every incentive to overcharge. There’s not much a risk to take in so doing, not much of a downside. But that wasn’t really an issue with Zimmerman, who had “dream team” lawyers and expensive expert witnesses. Where it would be an issue is with poor, mostly minority defendants relying on overworked and underfunded public defenders. Extravagant charges carrying harsh sentences are a way of intimidating defendants into accepting a plea bargain – whether they’ve done anything wrong or not.

Like out healthcare system, we do have the best justice system in the world — depending on how you measure. Our healthcare is as good as it gets as long as you have unlimited funds. Our “justice” system is the best in the world, measured by the number of people we convict, imprison, and execute.

Oh, come on! Do you know how hard Texas has to work to out-asshole Florida?*

    * Perry/Scott in 2016! “Vote for Ricks/They are dicks!” Woo!

D.C.: you could use the same measure for both. Perry thinks we have the best justice system in the world because it, also, is as good as it gets as long as you have unlimited funds.
