DeMint: Women Love Mandatory Ultrasounds!

Former senator turned Heritage Foundation leader Jim DeMint went on Meet the Press with Rachel Maddow and actually said that women loved all those mandatory ultrasound bills because they get to have a free ultrasound. Rachel hammered him for it. Remember, DeMint is the same guy who says pregnant women shouldn’t be allowed to be teachers (or gay people, of course).

I think a few hundred women should descend on his office and tell them exactly how much they love this free* ultrasound.

    * Most of the GOP bills require the woman to pay for the ultrasound herself, so I cannot imagine how “free” it actually is.

  2. says

The USA can’t have Socialized medicine because moochers will use too much of it, all the time, simply because it’s there.
The US must have mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasounds because women love having free medicine to diagnose the thing that the know they already have.

I assume DeMint is for mandatory trans-rectal exams for paternalistic men like him. “Oh, boy!” he’ll exclaim, “I get to see my head!”

So this is the Captin Crunch school of medicine. Buy a box of cereal and get a free prize, go for a medical procedure and get a free, mandatory uncomfortable procedure. Maybe we could give the senator a free Colonoscopy* with each doctor’s visit.

*anesthesia not included in free mandatory offer

  5. Pteryxx says

Gregory: “free” ultrasounds mean those provided by Crisis Pregnancy Centers, which are unregulated, usually religious, and lie to patients about the risks of abortion and sometimes even about how far along they are. For example, in Texas the state is required to refer patients seeking ultrasounds to crisis pregnancy centers as “providers” while leaving off any clinic that offers or refers for abortion, mainly Planned Parenthood.

    See the text here: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/wrtk/

HB 15 requires DSHS to publish a comprehensive list of agencies in Texas that offer sonograms at no cost to the pregnant woman and do not affiliate with, refer to or provide abortion related services. The list below, A Woman’s Right to Know Sonogram List, meets this requirement. The list will be added to the existing A Woman’s Right to Know Resource Directory (online and print versions), pending completion of the rules revision process in response to House Bill 15, 82nd Legislature, Regular Session.

After all, DeMint enjoyed his intellectomy, so it makes sense that women would want invasive medical procedures as well.

Really, I’m pretty sure MO has the complete set by now and sells the extras at collector’s cons.

MO@2 “Oh, boy!” he’ll exclaim, “I get to see my head!”
So glad I have my new ‘spew-proof’ keyboard.

The republicans just lost the last election so they’re now already preparing to lose the next election? Man, I hate that election campaigns start so soon after the last election!

  10. Michael Heath says

Meet the Press used to be a venue where even conservatives were careful about being honest. That was pre- W. Bush (with the exception of Newt Gingrich and his close allies). Dick Cheney was the first Republican I recall regularly going on that program and continuously lying. Now nearly all conservatives all lie at the same level they do everywhere else; so I hardly ever watch this show anymore given Gregory’s cowardice.

In this case Mr. DeMint led off his first statements on that show by claiming that the recent gay marriage rulings was destroying heterosexual marriage. Here’s DeMint’s first statement this past Sunday on the show:

What I’d say, David, is he [Justice Kennedy] is denying dignity to the millions of Americans [1] who, for moral or religious reasons, believe that gay marriage is wrong [2]. As you just said, you’ve got 37 states where the people have decided that they want to protect the marriage between a man and a woman because they know [3] that that’s the environment where children can thrive and succeed [4]. I mean, that’s been proven.[5]

I count five lies in his first paragraph, possibly six if we consider this statement more carefully, “you’ve got 37 states where the people have decided that they want to protect the marriage between a man and a woman”.

  11. tubi says

Can’t PP do something like spin off their abortion services from the other 97% of their health care operations, set it up as a non-profit, and then set up a foundation that’s separate from PP, donate some of their revenue to the foundation, and then the foundation can donate to the abortion services unit? I realize that’s complicated, but it might be worth it to continue providing the necessary service they now provide.

Does that count as “affiliated with”?

  12. eric says

Another case of closeted projection? DeMint fantasizing about the joys of free, government-required probing?

  13. says

“Maybe we could give the senator a free Colonoscopy* with each doctor’s visit.”

I think that the prep for a colonoscopy would have already taken care of that seein’s that DeMinty foulness will have already shit his brains out.

I think that DeMindless should volunteer to have one of those probes rammed up his ass to prove that it’s not invasive.

  14. machintelligence says

    tubi @ 11
It probably wouldn’t make any difference. Republicans hate PP and are no fans of birth control either. The very name has been known to throw some of them into a red rage — almost as bad as mentioning unions.

  15. Pteryxx says

tubi@11: Planned Parenthood already has separate funding for abortions vs the other 97% of what they do, to comply with the Hyde Amendment forbidding any federal funding going towards abortions.

    Background reading

That’s why states such as Texas block funding to any organization “affiliated with” abortion providers. In Texas they’ve blocked Medicaid and state family planning funds.

    http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/03/15/1725771/by-the-numbers-texas-planned-parenthood/?mobile=nc

    – Planned Parenthood provided care for nearly 50 percent of the low-income women who get Medicaid benefits through Texas’ Women’s Health Program (WHP) before anti-choice lawmakers kicked the organization out of the program.
    – Thanks to the decline in state funds designated for family planning services, Texas is now funding 176 fewer health clinics than it did in 2011.
    – 53 health clinics in Texas have been forced to close as a result of the budget cuts. 39 of those weren’t affiliated whatsoever with Planned Parenthood, and zero of them performed abortions.

  16. Synfandel says

Of course women love mandatory ultrasounds. That’s why we had to make them mandatory.

  17. Chiroptera says

machintelligence, #15: The very name has been known to throw some of them into a red rage — almost as bad as mentioning unions.

Ha ha! At first I read that as “mentioning unicorns.” The Christianists are sinking to such medievel levels of crazy that I wouldn’t be surprised if unicorns were on their list of things to be afraid of.

  18. says

I had kidney stones a while ago, and had to get them removed. I won’t go into to much detail, but lets say they had to get to my ureters without making an incision. I’ll let you map it out.

I propose that we start a fund. Every time that Jim DeMint goes to the doctor for whatever reason, we pay to have that procedure done to him. He should love it, because it’s a free bladder scrapping.

  19. maddog1129 says

is the mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound wand shaped like a wire hanger?

  20. lofgren says

it’s like I always say, two things women love are government handouts and invasive medical procedures, amirite fellas? why do you think they all voted for Obama?

  21. francesc says

    @11
For example, in Texas the state is required to refer patients seeking ultrasounds to crisis pregnancy centers as “providers”
Soo… I guess the state of texas is funding those centers with the excuse of being external providers

  22. says

Pregnant women shouldn’t be allowed to be gay people?! That’s outrageous!
