American Decency Association Freaks Out

Add the American Decency Association, really just a handful of cranks with a P.O. Box in Fremont, Michigan — only about an hour from where I live — to the list of Christian right groups flipping out over the Supreme Court’s marriage rulings and cranking up the paranoia machine:

As we look back on history there are dates which we now see were crossroads, turning points for nations and cultures. July 4, 1776; June 6, 1944. December 7, 1941; January 22, 1973. Battles fought, decisions made – some establishing goodness and justice, others are dates that “will live in infamy.”

I believe today, June 26, 2013, is the latter. A date when the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of same sex marriage, and undermined true marriage – one man and one woman – which was instituted, not by any government, but by God.

No it won’t. In 10 years, 20 years max, it will be a blip on the radar. Within a generation, people will wonder why on earth it was such a big deal. The only mention of it will be in celebration along with cases like Brown v Board of Education and Loving v Virginia as major advances in equality. And you and your friends are going to be looked at in exactly the same we look at George Wallace and the segregationists today, with a mixture of astonishment and disgust.

Consider the following short list of what may be in our future :

1. Hate crime laws will be increasingly instituted and enforced. Will pastors be prosecuted for preaching what God’s Word says regarding homosexuality and refusing to perform same sex “marriage” ceremonies?

2. Homosexuality will be a protected class by the government. Christian school teachers and administrators, pastors, business owners, etc. could be charged with discrimination if they speak out against or refuse to embrace homosexuality.

3. Organizations such as our own American Decency could easily lose their (c)3 tax-exempt, non-profit status as we continue to call homosexuality what it is – SIN.

4. God will not bless a nation that puts a stamp of approval upon that which he calls an abomination. The evidences of God’s displeasure are evident and becoming more so with each passing day.

None of those things will happen, of course. The discrimination laws do not apply to someone merely speaking out against anything. People are allowed to be as openly racist as they want to this day. The KKK is allowed to hold rallies on public property, as they should be. The same will be true here. You can yell and scream and express your hatred to your heart’s content. You can hold rallies on the courthouse steps about how horrible it all is. And no one will try to stop you. We’ll laugh at you. We’ll call you bigots, because that’s what you are. But this idea that you’re going to be hauled off to jail is moronic.

They have, at long last, no sense of “decency.”

That paranoia machine…we really should find a way to hook it up to the electrical grid. It seems to be the only true perpetual motion machine in existence.

Maybe they should loose their tax exempt status, they don’t sound very charitable to me.

If slippery-slope arguments are inherently suspect, that doesn’t bode well for free-fall arguments like theirs.

They can lose their 501(c)(3) tax exempt status only if they support or participate in election campaigns or lobbying. Calling homosexuality “sin” is neither. Tax exempt non-profits are allowed to express as bigoted views as they wish.

Yeah, God keeps hammering conservative areas of America which fight against SSM with tornadoes and wildfires and droughts. Oh, wait a minute, that’s probably just part of climate change which these goobers don’t believe in either.

Well…here in Massachusetts (where it all started!!) it *has* been raining an awful lot…maybe God’s judgement is slow and consists mostly of soggy basements?

They’ve been ignoring the vast majority of god’s words for millennia.

Eating pork and shellfish, wearing mixed fiber clothes, sowing two different seeds in the same field, stoning false prophets, disobedient children, and nonvirgin brides to death and on and on. There are something like 513 rules in the bible, the mitzvots and only a tiny minority even knows what they are any more.

Ignoring god’s words in the bible is a good thing. Anyone who actually followed them would be doing multiple life sentences in prison.

Well, he got that one right. Yesterday, I got stung by a bee. Today, I developed a hangnail.

I despair over what tomorrow might bring. Will god’s torment never cease!

Funny how they think God endorses the nation state and blesses some states and not others, and is going to punish everyone within a particular nation state for the perceived sins of judges and politicians. But this is indeed a bedrock belief among these kooks, e.g. Westboro Baptist. I think this explains why they insist that the US is a Xtian nation. Otherwise it would make no sense to them why God would be so well disposed toward (up till now) a nation that with such a secular constitution.

And I’m very curious to know what these ‘evidences’ of God’s displeasure are exactly?

    .
Maybe, if they advocate murdering people for these differences.

Oh noes! We’re going to end up like Sweden, with a working safety net, universal health care, a higher per capita income, and less than half the wealth disparity the US currently has.

It would probably be more accurate to call it projection.

Never have so many lost their shit over a ruling that will have zero impact on their lives. I wonder if it even occurs to them that the chances of Congress passing the imaginary and unconstitutional hate crimes law are completely independent of how the Supreme Court rules.

The Netherlands have practised `toleration’ (at first) and acceptance (more recently) of LGBTs since just after World War 2. When do you think God will get around to smiting them?

I would hate to give God ideas, but Netherlands is pretty easy to flood

Ed says none of their list will come to pass, and US law being what it is I suspect he’s right… but I vehemently hope that 2 and 3 on their list do come true. 4, obviously, is entirely irrelevant.

Why do I get the impression that #3 on the short list is the one that really matters?

“The evidences of God’s displeasure are evident…”

Sort of reminds me of Charles Platt who, in one of his books on science fiction, mockingly referred to the redundancy of a passage that spoke of someone suddenly sensing “the presence of a presence.”
