Harvey: Marriage Equality = Raising ‘Barbarians’

The unhinged Linda Harvey of Mission America went on an AFA radio show and gave her usual hysterical take on how marriage equality will destroy the world. She says if same-sex marriage is legalized nationwide, we’ll be raising barbarians — because treating gay people as human beings with equal rights is nothing if not barbaric, amirite?

    Cool! Does that mean we an all dress in fur loincloths and carry great huge battle axes? AWESOME! Thanks, marriage equality!

    True. Remember, near the end of Conan the Barbarian, Conan and his crew go and rescue the princess from being heterosexually “married” to Thulsa Doom. Her father hired Conan to bring her back so she could marry the daughter of powerful neighboring leader.

    What is best in life?

    To celebrate marriage equality, see it legalized everywhere, and to hear the ululations of their participants.

    As Harvey explained it, if gay marriage ever becomes accepted at part of the culture norm, it will fundamentally warp the worldview of children who will grow up thinking that it is okay to marry someone of the same sex. And if that ever happens, “it will revolutionize the psychology and spiritual development” of children by removing the fundamental “security level” that all previous generations understood

    “Security level”? … as in knowing that only one of your parents has parental rights and if s/he dies you could be put in a foster home rather than staying with the only other parent you’ve known?

    Or do I need to get one of those wingnut decoder rings to find out what she means by “security level”?

    Barbarian was the Latin word for “not of Rome” or something like that. It didn’t matter how complex, rich, and sophisticated you or your culture was, if you weren’t a Roman you were a barbarian. What a wonderfully elitist word. I guess if you use a definition like that then they’re right, except these barbarians will be identical to them except they don’t persecute homosexuals.

  6. Trebuchet says

    “Barbarians” actually meant “guys with beards”, more or less. Most Romans were clean shaven. I’m pretty sure Harvey would agree that Ed and PZ are barbarians, regardless of definition!

    I thought barbarian just referred to people of other cultures with funny languages that sound like “Bar bar bar.” I mean it’s a Roman word, but it means pretty much the same thing that it means now. It probably just had more racial connotations back then.

  8. Draken says

    I remembered it coming from barba rossa, ‘red beard’, but wikipedia says it’s from greek barbaros, or any non-greek, non-citizen.

    I love how her apocalyptic downfall of society is my hope for the future. No messing about with “OMG, but gays cause [random social ill]!” Just straight up, “My daughter might think that it’s OK for her to make decisions about her future when she’s good and ready to do so, instead of me getting to limit her options. And that’s TERRIBLE!”

    @trebuchet

    “Barbarian” actually has nothing to do with beards. It derived from the fact that to the Greeks, foreigners sounded like they were babbling incoherently, saying “bar-bar”.

    We can’t have same-sex marriage become socially and legally accepted — because then children will grow up thinking that same-sex marriage can be socially and legally acceptable! And that would be just terrible, because it will lead to same-sex marriage being socially and legally acceptable — which, as we have already demonstrated, will lead to such horrors as children growing up thinking that same-sex marriage is socially and legally acceptable. Think of the children!

    If Linda Harvey really thinks that not teaching our kids that being gay is an abhorrent lifestyle is going to lead to barbarism, she’s more of a barbarian than most of the people in this country, including most of our kids when they grow up.
