Wingnuts Go Over the Top

While liberal intellectuals make reasoned criticisms of the illegal surveillance revealed by new revelations about secret programs, some on the right are going completely off the deep end and dialing the rhetoric up to 11. Glenn Beck and Rick Wiles both went straight for the Godwin. Beck first:

And Wiles:

There’s rational criticism and then there’s this nonsense.

HAH! Ricky, I agree with you. I “blame America’s preachers” too!

  2. d.c.wilson:

As Lewis Black so aptly put it a while back, Glenn Beck has nazi Tourette’s.

Isn’t that title a little redundant?

Have these loons ever heard of Godwin’s law?

Are they trying to break it fastest and lose their “cases” or what?

Are their followers not aware of just how silly these whackjobs are?

Do people really take these batshit whackos seriously?

I really find that hard to believe.

The targeted demographic can barely understand the internet beyond plumbing analogies. Some of them doubtless believe that actual plumbing is involved.

Godwin’s Law is completely beyond them – they’ve been comparing things to Nazis all their lives. To them, it’s the ultimate winning argument – find some way in which your opponent superficially resembles those dirty Nazis (or just as good, commies), and you can stop arguing.. Nazi analogies are a lot easier for them, though, as they don’t really understand anything about communism so it’s hard to make comparisons.

    Re Stevarious @ #6

Gee, the Nazis believed that people should wash their hands before eating so I guess that the whackjobs don’t.

Well I’m stunned. I find myself agreeing with Glenn Beck aboiut something. He’s exactly right about how these databases would be used in a totalitarian state. Not here though – amirite?

When I saw the title, I was hoping that there was some sort of arm-wrestling competition for conservatives. That would’ve been much more entertaining.
