The “Even the ACLU” Meme

One of the more amusing memes coming out in the wake of new revelations about government surveillance is the one to the effect that “gosh, Obama has even lost the ACLU now.” I’ve seen it in many places, but one example is from Michael Savage, promoted by the Worldnutdaily.

“Even the ACLU is shocked” by the Obama administration’s secret grab of phone records of millions of Americans, says talk-radio host Michael Savage.

He noted on his nationally syndicated show Friday night that while Obama has characterized the government’s access to the data as a “modest encroachment” on privacy, an ACLU senior policy analyst called it a “gross privacy invasion.”…

Savage cited an op-ed for Reuters by the ACLU’s Ben Wizner that pointed out the disturbing privacy implications of the Obama administration’s surveillance program.

Other right wing sites have joined the chorus, with the Free Republic folks saying, “Even the ACLU is pretending to be shocked.” Actually, the ACLU isn’t shocked at all. The ACLU has been exposing Obama’s abuses of power from the moment he took office and has never let up. They’ve filed numerous lawsuits over illegal surveillance. This is only surprising to low-information ideologues who presume that everyone thinks like they do — always partisan, no matter the situation — rather than being principled. They’re only surprised by this because it conflicts with the ACLU in their head, not the one that actually exists.

Being openly against the ACLU basically says to me that you are an open authoritarian or theocrat.

Are they suggesting the President of the USA might be doing something illegal?

As if an American President would be involved in something illegal. Where do they get their ideas?

Unfortunately, this is why they (rethuglicans) are able to be so destructive- they follow their party no matter what. Dems are like herding cats, and progressives are like herding ferrets, which makes them easier to devour when a pack of starving dogs comes along. It sucks that being principled is a disadvantage in politics, but it IS.

Can I be a civet rather than a ferret or cat? (hand over the unripe coffee beans!)

I wonder if the real ACLU ever gets jealous of the sweeping unchecked powers and ni-infinite resources of the imaginary ACLU.

    …an open authoritarian or theocrat.

All theocrats are authoritarians, but not all authoritarians are theocrats.

Maybe they mean that the ACLU is accustomed to dealing with cases of extreme privacy invasion…and this invasion of privacy is so extreme, even the ACLU is shocked! Like horrifying a homicide investigator.

    Okay, probably not. :-)

Of course if it was a Republican President was doing what Obama was doing I have little doubt people like Savage would celebrate them getting “tough” and accuse those who decry the “necessary”(snark) measures to deal with the “Muslim threat”, (snark).

This is only surprising to low-information ideologues…

So what you’re saying is that the WorldNutDaily and those other right-wing sites haven’t got A CLU…
