Perry: BSA Will Answer to God

As the right wing continues to throw a temper tantrum over the Boy Scouts of America making a small, tenuous and incomplete step toward equality, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an Eagle Scout himself, told the FRC’s Tony Perkins that the board members who voted for the new policy will have to answer to God.

I think a loving, tolerant view towards those who have different sexual preference is the ideal position but Scouts has never been about sexuality and my point is that’s one of the reasons I wrote the book, it shouldn’t be. Scouting is not about sex, it’s about building character. But those who wanted to push their agenda have now put parents and young men in the position of making a decision, is this where I want to spend my time? Is this an organization that I do want to be associated with? I think the jury is going to be out for a while. I do think that those on that board made a decision that was driven by political correctness, by money and they will look back on it someday and be held accountable, so that day will come and they will stand before their maker and be accountable for the decisions that they made.

Yep. And someday, Mr. Perry, you will come face to face with my friend the invisible pink leprechaun and you will have to answer to him for being a demagogue with the IQ of a turnip. Does that thought scare you? No? Then you should understand how laughable the threats of your imaginary friend sounds to us.

Surely the obvious conclusion from this is that the Scouts should not make an issue of sexuality by treating people differently on the basis of it.

    One would think.

God’s going to judge you for three things: Scouts, sex and the — what’s the third one there? Let’s see. … OK. So Scouts, sex and the — … The third thing God’s going to judge you for –He’ll judge you for Scouts, the … sex and — let’s see — I can’t. The third one, I can’t. Sorry. Oops.” ~ Rick Perry

Yeah, matty1 beat me to it. I really don’t understand how some people think, really… if scouting has nothing to do with sex, then the sexual preference of its members is irrelevant… right? Am I missing something>

So, governor, that means you’ll shut up about it then?

Evangelicals: The BSA is a private organization that has the right to make it’s own decisions, so the libs need to shut up about who they do or don’t allow to be members and stop threatening boycotts.

BSA: We’ve decided to allow gay members.

Evangelicals: The BSA needs to do what we say or risk our wrathful boycotts!

You paid Beck a compliment when you described his IQ as equal to a turnip. Now, I don’t lie turnips, but why would you insult a root vegetable?

I never managed to make Eagle, but I don’t feel so bad now that I see what company it would have put me in.

  9. Trebuchet says

@#8: That’s Perry, of course, but other than that you’ve read my mind. I’ve never heard a turnip say anything so stupid as what passes from Perry’s lips every time he opens them. Or perhaps it’s coming from some other orifice.

Another very attractive heterosexual man who is obsessed with man/man sex. It almost makes you go hmmm, especially after those rumors from a few years back about Ricky and the teenage son of one of his cabinet members. Not that I’m saying he’s gay, of course, just saying….

Sadly I think I see where they’re coming from. It’s the same reason appointing a black person to a prominent position is automatically ‘about race’ and mentioning atheism in public is ‘controversial’. Some people see themselves and their preferences as a kind of default setting for the whole of humanity and anything different as a matter of people making an effort to rebel against normality.

  12. edmundog says

Uh huh. Sure. Let’s take care of that now. Hey, God? You got a problem with this, let us know now, okay?

Seems like he’s cool with it.

Evidently Rick P has heard this story, as summarized by TalkingPointsMemo –

Dan Quayle aide counsels Rick Perry: No way to shake the moron rep once it takes hold.

    – and decided, with nothing to lose, to stay the course!

But those who wanted to push their agenda have now put parents and young men in the position of making a decision,

Because that’s apparently a bad thing.

is this where I want to spend my time? Is this an organization that I do want to be associated with?

Shouldn’t these questions have been asked prior to joining any sort of group, regardless of outward appearance or ideological standing?

  15. Hercules Grytpype-Thynne says

    From my point of view:

But those who wanted to push their anti-gay agenda have now long put parents and young men in the position of making a decision, is this where I want to spend my time? Is this an organization that I do want to be associated with?

He’s an awful, utterly dishonest, casually-cruel Xian, so why bother to get upset? When a grasy asshole emits air, it smells unpleasant.

He’s an enemy who cannot, at this time, be reasoned with. We simply must oppose as best we can.

  17. lofgren says

As an atheist, I would put “You’ll answer to God” in the same category of innocuous chatter as “God bless you,” if it weren’t for the way that believers seem to take it upon themselves to act as God’s intermediaries here on earth.

  18. Gordon says

If, as he says “Scouting is not about sex” then it makes sense that your sexuality should not be a relevant factor to whether you can be a scout.

(Though my atheism disqualifies me from volunteering as a scout leader)

Gov. Goodhair speaks and I just hear “eeyaw, eeyaw, eeyaw.” I’m so tired of hearing all the stupid that comes out of that man. On behalf of Texas, I’m sorry for him.
