King: Jason Collins Undermining Civilization

Rep. Steve King, the prom king of Wingnuttia High School, is quite upset about Jason Collins coming out as a gay basketball player. And he’s even more upset about President Obama calling him afterward. And wouldn’t you know it, it involves Tim Tebow and the death of Western civilization too.

ING: I hear the president reducing or lowering American values by his comments that take place in the public and in the press. Think about the things he’s chosen to take sides on. […] Then we’ve got Tim Tebow who will kneel and pray to God on the football field. Meanwhile we have a professional athlete that decides he’s going to announce his sexuality and he gets a personal call from the United States to highlight the sexuality of a professional ballplayer. These are ways that the culture gets undermined, where it gets divided. The people over on this side take their followership from that kind of leadership. One notch at a time, American civilization, American culture, western civilization, western Judeo-Christiandom are eroded.

Yes, yes, yes. President Obama calling Jason Collins made the baby Jesus cry. We get it.

If this kills Western Civilization, then WC is on life support and is currently brain dead. How many times has something been the death of WC? Do politicians in Europe or anywhere else proclaim WC killers too?

He got a personal call from the United States? What country was he in at the time?

Then we’ve got Tim Tebow who will kneel and pray to God on the football field.

Yes, and that is very significant. I mean, I have never once seen any other professional athlete acknowledge god or the baby Jesus.

A small point lost on these folks is that Jason Collins announced his sexual orientation, not his sexuality. The phrase “announce his sexuality” just emphasizes a fascination with what others do when physically intimate.

[o/t]Things I wonder about: Why doesn’t Tebow’s team get penalized for an extra man on the field when he prays like that? I wonder which team will pick him up now that the Jets released him?[o/t]

I just kind of chuckled when I saw the title of this post.

It drives me nuts when they complain about people “flaunting their sexuality” or “making a big deal out of their sexual preference.”

It’s like, maybe we wouldn’t have to have big announcements like this if you assholes didn’t go insane over it. We wouldn’t need people like Jason Collins to come out in this way if jerks like King stopped losing their shit over people being gay. It’s another one of their self-fulfilling prophecies or what have you.

If Obama were to call every Christian athlete to congratulate him for loving Jesus, that would take up a 3rd term. If that’s what King wants, he can always propose to amend the constitution.

Ahhh… But don’t count. Wrong variety of Christianity, and probably the wrong skin color.

You see, was supposed to the right-wing Christian Übermensch; a shining example to a fallen world of what faith is supposed in JEEZ-us can accomplish. With God on his side, he was going to be bigger than Joe Montana or Packers-era Farve, all while calling attention to the “evils” of abortion and homosexuality.. He was their Great White Hope for the ultimate evangelist athelete who would win converts and confirm the power of Christianity with every winning touchdown pass and Super Bowl ad for Focus on the Family.

That was before we found out he was really a sub-parr quarterback and no amount of Tebowing was going to make him the star he was promised to become. Now that the hype in finally died and the NFL can’t figure out what to do with the load, the media turns away from Tebow. To add insult to injury, one of those queer-mo-sexuals–an abomination in the eyes of THA LAWD-–is getting positive press while the career of a pinnacle of Christian morality is in jeopardy?

    Baby JEEZ-us wept, indeed.

Western civilization began centuries before there were Christians or Jews – but facts don’t matter I guess.

Oh, who’s the special white Christian? Why, it’s Jason Collins! Oh, aren’t you special! Yes, you are, you’re so special. Congratulations on being such a special White Christian, Jason Collins!

There needs to be a comic depiction of fundies’ worst nightmare.
Call it “Homo Friends” with the small minority of super heroes possessing such powers as creating massive hurricanes through some process unleashed by teh buttsecks, destroying marriage, and Jason Collins is the most powerful, I suppose, with the ability to single handedly wipe out Western civilization.
Almost makes me wish they’d recruited me so I could be awesomely powerful and fabulous.

  11. timberwoof says

Derp. Let me try that again.

Oh, who’s the special white Christian? Why, it’s Steve King! Oh, aren’t you special! Yes, you are, you’re so special. Congratulations on being such a special White Christian, Steve King!

Think about the things he’s chosen to take sides on.

Not taking sides is taking a side. As in this case, the jerks’ side, generally.

These are ways that the culture gets undermined, where it gets divided.

Apparently ignoring divisions means they aren’t there.

Tebow has never lived up to the hype built up around him and that’s what really frustrates the fundjelicals. According the script, he was supposed to lead his team to the Superbowl and win it all, thereby turning America back to Christ and making sure that a half second of nipple exposure never happens during a half-time show ever again.

Oh, and all of teh gays would stop existing.

  14. Ichthyic says

Can anyone tell what language he was trying to speak so I can run it through Babelfish?

    ayup:

    Right Wing Authoritarian.

    not even with an accent.

Steve King could do Western Civ a great service by joining a monastery and taking a permanent vow of silence.

  16. thumper1990 says

His entire screed is based on the premise that Western Civilisation as it currently stands is something that ought not to be undermined. I disagree with his premise.

  17. birgerjohansson says

Am I the only one who reads “The Authority”? Apollo and the Midnighter -two gay superheroes with liberal politics who go after the corrupt businessmen and politicians as well as the blue-collar criminals. THAT is truly the end times.
Um.., a band participating in the Eurovision song contest featured two women kissing, but so far Europe has not been hit by a tsunami/asteroid/plague. In fact, no one over here seems to care.

IMO fundies have a love-hate relationship with professional sports organizations (like the NFL). They love the ‘christian role-model’ opportunity such organizations provide. But they hate it when these organization’s very strong focus on merit and competency (and not morality or religion) doesn’t serve their social interests. How dare you care more about a person’s skills than their moral character!!!
