Glenn Beck Has a Gift

Apparently not content merely to be a batshit crazy religious righter, Glenn Beck is now moving into Sylvia Browne territory. He claimed on his Tuesday show, while discussing the case of the three women rescued in Cleveland, that he just has a “bizarre gift” of being able to “look people in the eye and I can feel them and I don’t know anything about them, I don’t know what they’re going through but I can feel pain sometimes.” Move over, John Edwards.

What you are describing is “empathy”, Mr. Beck. And it leads to Hitler.

    isn’t that called empathy?

Can’t be empathy, could there, against allodds, be a shred of conscience still alive in him somewhere, hiding out & striking from the shadows like a scruple-ninja?

Glenn Beck’s gift is making stuff up.

And pandering to the lunatic fringes for money.

Lots of money. Glenn Beck’s net worth, made recently at that, is estimated at $100 million. Oddly enough, his cable network has been successful and is growing rapidly.

On present trend, he is going to be a billionaire in a few years.

Wouldn’t empathy be a “bizzare gift” for someone on the religious right?

I haven’t actually watched the clip as I value my brain cells (especially important at my age!) but I couldn’t help noticing from the still that Beck is wearing: Undershirt, shirt, sweater, jacket. In addition to the Mormon Magic Underwear he’s supposed to have on. He must keep the A/C in his studio turned up to max!

I call bullshit. Beck is lying, as usual. I don’t believe that shitstain has a shred of empathy in him, except maybe for his bank account. When he was getting boycotted, I bet he could feel it’s pain alright.

Exclusive: Glenn Beck’s company makes how much?
By Dan PrimackMay 6, 2013: 4:55 PM ET

Glenn Beck doesn’t just hawk gold, he mints it.

FORTUNE — Glenn Beck’s right-wing media network TheBlaze is generating between $35 million and $45 million in revenue per year, according to information obtained by Fortune. Beck’s broader business empire, which also include his eponymous radio program and speaking tours, brings in more than $80 million annually.

The New York-based company recently disclosed in a regulatory filing that it is seeking to raise upwards of $40 million in private equity funding.

The company also is telling prospective investors that it expects a compound annual growth rate of nearly 45% over the next five years.

    Read it and wonder.

Beck grosses $80 million a year. And expects an annual growth rate of…45%. That is a lot.

There is huge money in pandering to the lunatic fringes. The USA is a world leader in many areas. Among them; we have the largest and richest lunatic fringes in the world.

Sounds like he’s got a Jesus complex going there.

That’s how Jesus called his disciples. Picked them out of a crowd for no apparent reason, and their lives were instantly changed.

I wonder if he’ll use that money to fund some sort of miniature camel breeding project? Or maybe just purchase a factory that produces oversized sewing supplies?

Glenn Beck claims to have empathy now? Sorry, I’m going to have to see some evidence.

What I find funny about his story is that, if it is true, the man whom Mr. Beck comforted was probably depressed or deeply upset not because of reasons we would sympathize with – mental illness like depression, the death of a relative, the loss of a friend, and so forth – but the truly frightening realization that he is now living in a world where gay people are treated as equals, people of colour are seen to deserve the same opportunities as those who are white, women are (although not to the same extent as we would want) going into positions of power – in other words, the old structures of hegemony and privilege that have heretofore benefited him are showing signs of erosion (again, not to the extent that we want, but even signs can be threatening and scary). And that is truly upsetting. Furthermore, unlike poverty or social marginalization, THAT cause of emotional unease is something Mr. Beck could sympathize with, assuming he is capable of sympathy.

Maybe the ‘pain’ he feels sometimes is the people mentally beaming their desire to punch him in the face?

I’m not thinking that Beck’s discovering he still has a single functional mirror neuron can be classed as “empathy”.

General lack of empathy is the reason most of the religious right has no perceptible sense of humour. Mr. Beck’s total lack of sense of humour is probably due to his lack of empathy. The comments quoted above show that when he occasionally feels a shred of empathy he thinks it’s something remarkable.

They’re called mirror neurons, Beck. Pretty much every normal brain has them. Although I join with many of the previous commenters in being a little suprised to find that yours work.

So… he thinks it’s a bizarre gift because in his social circles the men never talk about other people’s feelings (and seriously, who listens to women or kids?).
    .
So he’s a jerk, but maybe not a true sociopath. Still a full-bore loon, however, possessed with unmitigated greed, and crippled by notions of mythic content and proportions.

Perhaps Mr. Beck needs a trip back to Ferenginar, he seems to be developing puny hew-mon emotions.
