U of Arizona Student: ‘You Deserve Rape’

On Tuesday, the University of Arizona’s Tuscon campus was the site of a Take Back the Night rally, events that highlight the need to fight the incidence of rape. But one student there who is well known for preaching hatred and bigotry on the campus decided to tell women that they deserve to be raped.

A student holding a sign that read “You deserve rape” ignited outrage across campus Tuesday, on the same day of a sexual assault awareness event, but administrators declined requests to remove him or his sign.

Dean Saxton — also known as Brother Dean Samuel — regularly preaches on the UA Mall in front of Heritage Hill and the Administration building. On Tuesday, his sermon drew the attention of onlookers, several of whom either personally confronted him or complained to the Dean of Students Office…

Saxton, a junior studying classics and religious studies, said his sermon was meant to convey that “if you dress like a whore, act like a whore, you’re probably going to get raped.”

“I think that girls that dress and act like it,” Saxton said, “they should realize that they do have partial responsibility, because I believe that they’re pretty much asking for it.”

Tell me again how Christianity is good for women?

U of Arizona Student: ‘You Deserve Rape’

Me : NO I do not deserve rape.

    Nor does anyone else.

Even that sack of shit U of Arizona student.

  3. Bronze Dog:

Translation I get: “Rape isn’t a crime, it’s law enforcement.”

  4. Gregory in Seattle:

The school said they could do nothing. But what if the sign told African Americans “You deserve lynching” or told Latinos “You deserve deportation”?

Somehow, I doubt the university would have shrug its collective shoulders and muttered something about free speech.

  5. Drew:

Maybe this is all a performance art piece designed to test free speech bounds at a public university…

  6. Drew:

    but probably not

  7. grumpyoldfart:

As soon as I saw the photo of him holding the sign, I wondered if maybe he had fantasized about rape and was now trying to blame the women for his impure thoughts. Let’s face it, there is something pretty serious going on in his head that allows him to hold a sign like that and still claim the high moral ground.

  8. Trebuchet:

In the internet age, he’s destroyed his job prospects for all time. Except at fundie churches, whackjob thinktanks and “journalists” like WND, which is all he probably wants anyhow.

  9. reasonbe:

Gregory in Seattle at #4: Bingo.

  10. Pierce R. Butler:

Gregory in Seattle @ # 4: … what if the sign … told Latinos “You deserve deportation”?

In Arizona? He would probably, without any further effort, win both the governorship and the sheriffship of Maricopa County through the write-in vote.

As for the sign, if he follows the standard pattern of campus preachers, he probably took it for granted that his audience understood him in context of his already having repeatedly denounced the entire student body as adulterers, fornicators, and general-purpose sinners and paragons of moral turpitude.

  11. Abby Normal:

You know who is asking to be raped, the person who says, “I have this fantasy. I want you to rape me. Would you be up for something like that? The safe word is orangutan.” Everyone else, not asking for it.

  12. Richard Bartholomew:

He’s part of a whole wacky world of “confrontational” campus evangelists, as I noted here.

  13. Modusoperandi:

He’s going to make no one a good husband someday.

  14. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!:

    @ ^ Modusoperandi : I doubt that.

@ 11. Abby Normal : Exactly. What you said.

@12. Richard Bartholomew : That would be giving “whacky” a very bad name.

  15. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!:

D’oh. Okay, sorry, Modusoperandi I take that back on closer inspection you were right there. Thought you hwere saying “someone” not no one.” (Blushes, rubs eyes, heads to bed.)

  16. Raging Bee:

This messed-up wanker reminds me of Brother Jed Smock back at UVa, who seemed to have nothing better to do than shout stupid insults in all directions just to draw attention to his standard evangelical Christian bullshit. And I think the primary intended audience of people like this is students who are feeling adrift in a new scary grownup world, away from home, who might allow themselves to be bowled over by verbal bullying simply because it sounds to them like “authority” or “leadership,” which they feel they desperately need.

  17. dingojack:

Abby – Well that certainly puts ‘Every Which Way but Loose’ in a different context.

But seriously, has this nut-job ever heard of that preacher guy called Jesus? You know he of John 8:1-11 fame?

    Dingo

  18. left0ver1under:

Even money says Saxton will not be threatened with expulsion for advocating rape, let alone actually being expelled.

Meanwhile, U of North Carolina student Landen Gambill was threatened with expulsion for simply reporting the fact that she was raped. School mis-administration accused her of “intimidating” the man who raped her by speaking out (even though she did not name him).

  19. erichoug:

Somebody’s a whore here. Maybe, AN ATTENTION WHORE!? Huh, Huh? Mr. Saxton? Are we a little attention whore?

Seriously we used to have lunatics like this on campus and about all you can do is point, laugh and keep an eye out for “sympathetic” administrators and faculty. That is what you really need to watch for. This idiot just wants his name on the news and doesn’t really care how he gets it.

  20. kemist, Dark Lord of the Sith:

You deserve to get the stuffing beaten out of you

“if you look like an asshole, act like an asshole, you’re probably going to get punched in the face.”

“I think that dudes that look and act like it, they should realize that they do have partial responsibility in my fist knocking out their teeth and my foot crushing their balls, because I believe that they’re pretty much asking for it.”

  21. Raging Bee:

left0ver1under: wait, lemme guess…the rapist was a jock, right? That seems to excuse a lot of things these days.

  22. theschwa:

His sign was supposed to read “You deserve pear.” He is supporting eating more fresh fruit and got his letters jumbled.

  23. Gretchen:

    Dear Dean,

The definition of rape is what? Not asking for it. The whole “lack of consent” thing. Okay?

Good. I recognize that’s complicated enough to give a toddler a moment’s need to contemplate, but I hope you’ve got it straight now.

  24. steffp:

“I think that girls that dress and act like it,” Saxton said, “they should realize that they do have partial responsibility, because I believe that they’re pretty much asking for it.”
    Oh, are they?
They dress and act for Tom Cruise, not for you, buttface.

  25. Gretchen:

    That’s an interesting point, steffp.

If Dean Saxton thinks all of these girls are asking to be raped, why hasn’t he raped any of them?

Are they all simply below his standards?

  26. D. C. Sessions:

If #1 Son (currently a grad student at UA) can find time from helping out some other students today, he may have words to add, having crossed parts of speech with this dipshit.

As for me, well, I have a daughter who graduated from UA and a lover who graduated from UA, plus two sons currently there and some friends besides. Including one who was raped … at UA.

All things considered, it’s a good thing I didn’t meet this young specimen while I was there a bit over a week ago and that right now I’m a couple of hours away. Because all in all, I get too much fun out of baiting people like this.

  27. WMDKitty -- Survivor:

Am I the only one who read that sign as a threat to all female students?

  28. baal:

I was going to take exception to Kemist’s @20 violence but um, that’s exactly the point. Well done.

  29. D. C. Sessions:

It dawns on me that I could have been more explicit about “baiting.”

Basically, it’s a variation on “lots of cheap talk, but why should we take you seriously since you obviously don’t believe what you’re saying yourself or you’d do something about it.”

  30. Abby Normal:

Baal, I had exactly the same reaction.

  31. timgueguen:

Someone needs to point out to Dean that sex workers aren’t free game any more than any other women.

  32. imthegenieicandoanything:

Can’t some folks dress up as as Hollywood-style witches or satanists and cast creatively weird curses at this shit? Xians get off on the hatred ordinary people toss at them, but generally freak out when they think the “occult” is involved.

A drum circle and a little witch-doctor throwing curses would at least be good street theater. and might well scare this creep back under his rock.

  33. Alan:

You make stupid statements? You are “just asking” to have your lips sewn shut.

  34. tbp1:

I think someone’s not getting laid.

  35. Quantum Mechanic:

    tbp1:
You are indeed correct. He is, in fact, quite proud over his not “succumbing to his lust”. Boastful, in fact. Apparently, mutual lust is a worse mortal sin than masturbatory pride.

I’m a student at the UA, and last semester I had to put up with walking past the nut-job every Tuesday and Thursday at noon. Brother Dean regularly sits in front of the Admin building, haranguing the students clustered there. It’s a pity, really, because it’s a nice slope with thick grass and even shade in places (you can see part of it in the background). He’s often accompanied by signs condemning “sodomites”, “fellatists”, “”cunninligists”, and other sex-act-roots-I-didnt-know-could-be-applied-to-a-class-of-people. I think that, before this, most people just ignored him. It was really just another (admittedly really annoying) bigot.

Baiting him has, admittedly, become somewhat of a tasteful sport. In February, the local Secular Student Alliance chapter held a Bingo event during his week-long freakout over SexTalk Week. I’ve even gotten one in on him recently. He was haranguing as usual, today about “The Insidious Homosexuals”, at which point I proceeded to ask him if they were a monolithic group like “the Christians”. At this point, he turned and asked if I was gay, at which point I asked (in a shocked, I say shocked! manner) if he was coming on to me. He… didn’t take it well.

  36. dan4:

The silence is quite deafening from those who would (quite rightfully) condemn a MUSLIM man for behaving in this same manner.

  37. dingojack:

Dan – TURN UP YOUR HEARING AID!!! (Never mind ‘wearing down the batteries’).

I’ve seen people get a few good ones in on him, but that might be my favorite. Wish I’d been there for that.

Am I the only one who read that sign as a threat to all female students?

You, and a good portion of the student body here. I know that was my reaction.

  39. dan4:

“You deserve rape…have partial responsibility…”LOL, the idiot is not even consistent with his own offensive argument (i.e., “You deserve rape” implies that the raped woman has FULL responsibility for what happened to her).

  40. left0ver1under:

    Raging Bee (#21) –

Her ex-boyfriend, actually, but it could easily have been. There are so many instances of jocks assaulting women and the cases covered up that one loses count.

  41. =8)-DX:

People, just so’s you know, there’s a youtube video of this wackjob. According to the peopel filming, he regularly goes out to “preach” offensive things. There were anti-protests as well as people making fun/arguing with him. Another thing worth (but not much) noting is he had another sign saying, if I remember, something like “rapists deserve the death penalty”. That doesn’t excuse anything. Furthermore he was actually arguing with women on campus saying they deserved to be raped to the one’s he deemed dressed inappropriately.

  42. uzza:

What’s the message? Dude’s wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Go on Rentboy.com and you’ll see lots of actual whores wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

  43. mishcakes:

He even got out his special red marker to underline RAPE. What a jerk. I’d be interested to see if he goes one of two predictable courses: either ends up as a “correspondent” for some wingnut website, or is caught with a few male prostitutes.

  44. kermit.:

    .
    Why not both?
    .
Gretchen: If Dean Saxton thinks all of these girls are asking to be raped, why hasn’t he raped any of them?
    .
He very likely has raped, but not on campus. If he has elsewhere, he’s probably still mad at those “girls for making him do it”. Oh well, at least he wasn’t sullied by the experience.
    .
He probably hasn’t on campus because he doesn’t think he could get away with it.
    .
True story: as a young Southern Baptist, I listened in horror to the Youth Director tell us kids that “[he] would do whatever a girl on a date would let him do, but [he] couldn’t marry her afterward because she wouldn’t be pure”.
