Another Local Politicians Uses Racial Slur

Another local politician, this time in Michigan and this time a Democrat, has been caught on tape using a racial slur. Buena Vista Township Clerk Gloria Platko called a black member of the township’s board of trustees a “nigger” and it was recorded and released to the press.

After playing the audio recording, Interim Township Manager Dexter Mitchell called for the resignation of Clerk Gloria Platko, who can be heard on the recording using the N-word to describe Township Supervisor Dwayne Parker.

Mitchell said he recorded the call in January without Platko’s knowledge because he didn’t want her to twist his words. About six minutes into the recording, Mitchell asks, “Would you be willing to sit down with (Parker)?”

Platko told Mitchell that Parker is “just rubbing me the wrong way.

“He is just doing whatever he can. You know what I think of Mr. Parker right now, and I know you’re not even going to like this,” Platko said in the recording. “But he’s just an arrogant (N-word). And I’m sorry to say it that way, but that’s the way I feel.”

She says she’s sorry. Oh, and she can’t be racist because she’s eaten dinner with black people:

“I’m sorry to my five other board members and I’m entirely sorry to this entire community,” says Platko.

Platko was recorded calling township supervisor Dwayne Parker the n-word. Platko says that doesn’t make her racist.

“I’ve eaten Thanksgiving dinner with black friends at their house. So I’m far from prejudiced. You need to go interview some of the black people who have supported me for the last four or five years,” says Platko.

I bet she even lets them use her bathroom.

Perhaps she was just confused and thought the slur was describing his job duties. That his job was to nig. And that he did it in a very arrogant way?

I bet she even lets them use her bathroom.

Okay, I’ve never understood why that’s supposed to be an indication of racism.

As opposed to what ..NOT letting them use her bathroom?

By saying she *would* let them use her bathroom aren’t you saying or implying she isn’t actually racist rather than that she *isn’t* as I guess you intend to by referring to her using the n-word? Maybe as an Aussie I’m just not getting the USA racial relations stuff? (Shrug.)

I bet she has piles and piles of black friends!

Erm, typo fix, that second asterisked “isn’t” there was meant to be *is* instead. Sorry.

Too late at night for me, too many beers as per usual. Expect y’all get the gist anyhow but still. Sigh.

@3. imrryr :“I bet she has piles and piles of black friends!”

Aaand, again, that would make her NOT a racist rather than one unless you left out a sarcasm tag or wink emoticon or suchlike there? Or is that to be presumed here? /confused.

    @2

The bathroom reference is a reference to this.

  7. dingojack:

imrryr – surely that would be: ‘wood-piles and wood-piles of black friends’.
Stevo – The implication is that she just barely condescends to allow them the ‘privilege’ of using the toilet, rather than forcing them to squat behind the bushes* at the bottom of the yard.

PS: On a side note, is it legal to record a telephone conversation, then release it to the media to publish without the permission of all the parties involved?

  8. Robert B.:

@ 2: It’s sarcasm. Letting a black person use your bathroom, like eating a meal with them, is a very low bar to get over and is not in any way sufficient to prove one is not racist. (Though in fact, whites-only bathrooms and restaurants really were a thing in the southern US up until the civil rights movement in the 1960s.) Saying you’re not racist because you once had dinner with black people is like saying you’re not sexist because you don’t beat your wife.

2 liters of Ringer’s sarcasm detection solution to Oz, stat!

    @6. tubi & # 8. Robert B. & I guess #9. Johnny Vector too : Okay, cheers.

In most states, the “one-party consent” law states if one person knows the call is being recorded, it’s legal. That’s the case in Michigan.

  12. Who Knows?:

I bet the black “friends” she had dinner with are banging their heads on their desks right about now.

  13. Ace of Sevens:

Wow. Most incidents have been relatively obscure slurs where the person coudl sem-plausibly claim they didn’t know better. That’s not the case here.

Pretty sure the whole bathroom/restroom thing has to do with http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/what.htm (check out the 3rd sign down)

Jim Crow had some pretty strict rules…

  15. Gretchen:

The bathroom comment is something actually said by a politician of some sort who featured in a blog post Ed did….oh, years ago now. Sorry I can’t be more specific– it’s just they all run together, sounding exactly the same in their transparent ridiculousness.

“I bet she even lets them use her bathroom.”
or make them use the hose if they are thirsty…how kind of her.

So that they can go on record saying that they won’t be supporting her next year…
