Dumbass Quotes of the Day

Among the many appalling responses to the bombings in Boston is this one from Pat Dollard, who apparently doesn’t realize that George W. Bush was president at the time of the 9/11 attacks.

And Alex Jones can always be counted on to jump immediately to the most absurd conclusion:

No evidence whatsoever, of course. But who needs evidence? It wouldn’t be a conspiracy theory if you actually had evidence. In fact, the lack of evidence only proves how clever the conspiracy was.

“Our hearts go out to those hurt or killed, but I’m still going to use their suffering and deaths as an excuse to push my tawdry and paranoid conspiracy theories”

  2. says

Yeah, but Bush had only been president for about 8 months and didn’t have time to get his policies in place, so 9/11 doesn’t count.

Yes, some Bush supporters actually say that.

I don’t know who this Dollard character is, but if it turns out, as it seems, that the two brothers acted on their own, then there would be no intel to give warning of the attack, unlike a certain president who received a memo titled Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the US.

  3. says

Viz. Dollard’s claims as far as I am aware it’s still not even clear whether the suspected bombers were politically-motivated (which I would expect to be a minimum requirement for a violent act to be classified as political terrorism).

  4. Doug Little says

I just read some of that dude’s twitter feed (Pat Dollard) what a raving fucking moron.

  5. Trebuchet says

More likely religious terrorism than political, since the whole Chechen problem is deeply entwined with Islamists.

Off Topic: Ed, PLEASE do something about the goddam popups. Most of them are for scams or medical quackery, including one for a weight loss product being promoted by Dr. Oz and about which PZ blogged the very day I saw it.

  6. says

Alex Jones still has Sunil Triparthi’s name up as a suspect despite there being never any suggestion of his involvement. Sunil’s been missing for a month and his family have their number up in order for him or anyone else who knows where he is to contact them and people have been sending hate mail all day…

BTW: I think you should have reserved “Dumbass Quote of the Day” for much later. The day is not nearly over, and I think some spectacularly dumbass things will be said between now and midnight.

  8. Synfandel says

Islam is a religion. Islamism is a political ideology that claims to draw its moral justification from Islam.

  9. noastronomer says

That’s a whole new class of jumping-to-conclusions, Alex should be careful – he might actually launch himself into orbit.

I think I can top that for dumbest thing said of the day…

Currently there are a sizeable amount of people making statements about the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia) because they think Chechyans are from there…

  11. tomp says

“Currently there are a sizeable amount of people making statements about the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia) because they think Chechyans are from there…”

That’s right. Czechoslovakia is all radical Islamists and we can’t do anything about it because it controls 60% of the world’s oil supply. I did have fun riding on camels past their pyramids while I was there, though. Plus being on the border with Poland means they can get all the nail polish they want for free.

  12. cptdoom says

Yeah, but Bush had only been president for about 8 months and didn’t have time to get his policies in place, so 9/11 doesn’t count.

So we can just blame him for the DC sniper, and that would still put the death toll from terrorism under his watch higher than Obama’s.

The pyramids are in the Sudetenland, right? You know, with the people who started WW 2 because they hated German freedome?

  13. says

Wouldn’t it be clever if Alex Jones did a double fake-out, false-flag attack, making it appear that it was an American Government false flag operation? I think Glenn Beck should look into this.

  14. says

No evidence, Ed?!? Apparently, you overlooked a key bit of evidence discovered by Paul Joseph Watson of InfoWars! Wait for it….

UPDATE: FBI briefing on Boston bombings postponed. The FBI said it “needs more time to prepare” before speaking to the media. Struggling to get their narrative straight in the aftermath of numerous men with backpacks being identified?

We know that “Struggling to get their narrative straight” is the only possible explanation for the FBI to say it “needs more time to prepare” before revealing sensitive (and potentially compromising) details about a case of this magnitude currently under investigation!

In all seriousness, though, I’m curious to know whether Alex Jones & Co. believe there has been or ever could be a terrorist attack not cooked up and orchestrated by the government.

And media theorists have said mass media theory is dead…

  15. Michael Heath says

Even if 9/11 and the resulting wars hadn’t happened, “George Bush kept us safe” is still a freakin’ warped view of how things work; and infantile thinking.

  16. Rip Steakface says

There are seriously people blaming the Czech Republic for a couple of Chechens, one of whom is actually American, bombing Boston? Ugh. You know, in Poland, they actually have proper geography classes for *years* in school. It’s a core subject.

In American public schooling, I’ve never had a dedicated geography class. In primary school, I had the occasional bit of geography for a week or two or some sort of minor weekly test that barely counted for anything. Since middle and high school, I’ve never had anything geography focused and mandatory. I don’t even think my high school offers geography.

I’d like to see a citation for Bush specially having a memo, or in fact it even reaching a general. Basically the way military intelligence works is that they have people payed to sift through tons of cables a day searching for something that they think might be relevant/credible. Then at the end of the day they brief a higher up who determines whether or not they agree then pass it on to higher ups if they agree that it is important/relavent.

I might be naive, but I suspect knowing is equivalent to a bunch of other things they “knew” about which never came to fruition even without intervention.

It is often said that military intelligence is an oxymoron on a related note.

Yep, when I was there they were cleverly disguised as white people and spent a lot of time drinking and vomiting in the streets outside all-night casinos…eh, that might have been German tourists after all…I hope we get this straightened out before we send in the drone strikes on Prague.

  19. caseloweraz says

    Dollard: “…once again [Obama] fails…”

What’s that supposed to refer to? If I had to guess, I’d say “Benghazi.” But President Obama still beats Bush 43 all hollow in this department.

  20. lofgren says

I’d like to see a citation for Bush specially having a memo

The memo was given to Bush on Monday, August 6 2001 at his ranch at Crawford, TX. It was first reported in the press on May 15, 2002. Cite: pretty much anywhere.
