Carson’s Obnoxious Comparisons

Ben Carson, the very talented neurosurgeon who is about the hottest thing going on the religious right, is unsurprisingly an opponent of marriage equality. Sean Hannity brought him on his show to argue against it and he delivered this offensive comparison:

CARSON: My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman, it’s a well-established uh, fundamental pillar of society. No group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA [the North American Man/Boy Love Association], be they people who believe in beastiality, it doesn’t matter what they are, they don’t get to change the definition. So it’s not something that’s against gays, it’s against anybody who wants to come along and change the fundamental definitions of pillars of society. It has significant ramifications.

No. It. Doesn’t. The only people it affects are gay people. It will have zero impact on your life and your marriage. I was going to say that I don’t know why this is so hard to understand, but in fact I do. The Christian right doesn’t understand this because it produces cognitive dissonance. If they understood that, or at least admitted it, then their entire argument would fall apart. So they keep up this pretense that “redefining” marriage is going to have some overwhelming impact on them, on children, on civilization, and so forth. It’s in their best interests, in the sense that it helps them maintain their belief in the face of all evidence to the contrary, not to understand or admit that.

The argument that there is a single, consistent “definition” of “traditional” marriage is an outright, total, absolute lie. Even within the contest of their own religion. Every time they say this they are lying.

Same sex marriage – Consensual relationship between adults.

Child abuse – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
NAMBLA – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
Bestiality – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
Rape – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
Murder – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
Hitler – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.
Theism – NOT Consensual relationship between adults.

Clearly, same sex marriage is not the same as the rest of them… so drop the fucking worthless comparisons!

Dr. Carson is also a Seventh Day Adventist who rejects the theory of evolution. Attached is a post by Prof. Jerry Coyne describing Carson’s infantile understanding of the theory of evolution. I have to say that Carson is remarkably ignorant for a grown man.

Ed is right, it’s cognitive dissonance, and Ben Carson is right that “It has significant ramifications.” Carson admits that “My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman.” To recognize that other kinds of families exist, and that there is no respectable reason to deny the benefits of marriage to those families, has significant ramifications for Carson’s thought process, and must be defended against at all costs.

It is very much like what Danny Kaye said about Psychotics and Neurotics (Carson would be the Neurotic in this case):
The Psychotic says that two plus two is five; he is quite candid.
The Neurotic knows that two plus two is four; he just cant stand it!

Oh, it will have. It will hammer home the fact that their group is no longer the sole defining authority and arbiter of societal propriety, and that’s going to burn like a thousand suns for a hundred years. At least.

One sick thing that sticks out to me when these wingnuts bring up bestiality: If anyone approaches endorsement of bestiality, it’s chattel-based “traditional” marriage advocates that treat women like livestock to be dominated instead of sapient beings with their own goals in life.

It’s not just same sex couples that want a better, more dignified definition of marriage, it’s also people like me. I’m not likely to get married, but if I find a woman who changes my mind, the kind of marriage I’d want with her wouldn’t be anything like the image I get from these jerks.

A shiny new internets for you. If only the wingnuts were able to respond intelligently to the trauma of blunt, obvious truths the way you wielded them, there.

“Ignorant for a grown man?” Yup, and that’s impressive given how routine ignorance is.

“Ignorant for an MD who teaches at a totally kick-ass medical school” is something else again, and he manages to exceed the requirements by an utterly awe-inspiring margin. How the expletive has he managed to completely blank out all of the biology (microbiology!) that he had to master to get through med school to begin with? And then keep his filters up day in and day out to avoid running nose-first into the science running around all over the place at Johns Hopkins?

tynk – for Fundamentalists of course consent has nothing to do with it. For them, morality is obeying the king. Since their king is imaginary, the fact that his royal orders correspond largely to the servants’ own predilections is not coincidental.

These people are slaves, and proud of it, and are outraged at anyone who shows no need to kowtow to the cruel and capricious demands of a sexually obsessed and murderous monster from which they have no escape (except the courage to face their own foolishness, their eminent demise, and ostracism from the tribe – not an easy task).
    .
They are baffled by our frequent references to consent. What, they ask, has that to do with moral behavior? They will never understand your demand (“Drop the fucking worthless comparisons!”) until they realize that morality is how we treat other people, not how well we obey an abusive parent.

    Re D. C. Sessions @ #11

I think that David Gorski, writing on his ORAC blog, has explained that surgeons really don’t have to know much biology to perform their tasks. He was referring to Dr. Michael Egnor, a creationist neurosurgeon who is on the faculty of SUNY at Stonybrook medical school but it also applies to Dr. Carson.
