WND, Jones Still Pushing False Ammunition Conspiracy

The Worldnutdaily is promoting and republishing material from Alex Jones’ InfoWars website pushing this ridiculous conspiracy theory that the Obama administration is purchasing massive amounts of ammunition to use against American citizens.

While the Department of Homeland Security continues to ignore members of Congress demanding to know why the federal agency is engaged in an apparent arms build-up, the DHS has just announced it plans to purchase another 360,000 rounds of hollow point ammunition to add to the roughly 2 billion bullets already bought over the past year.

A solicitation on the Federal Business Opportunities website details the DHS’ plan to purchase 360,000 rounds of “Commercial leaded training ammo (CLTA) Pistol .40 caliber 165 grain, jacketed hollow point.” The bullets are to be delivered to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico, the same destination for 240,000 hollow point rounds which were purchased only last month.

But DHS has not ignored members of Congress on this issue. They have replied to requests for information and that information has satisfied even the wingnuttiest members of the Senate, like Tom Coburn:

In its letter to lawmakers, the agency explained that it regularly purchases ammunition in bulk to save money and noted that “the 1.6 billion number was misleading because the language of DHS’s purchase said it would need ‘up to’ a certain amount.” That letter came a month after DHS offered a detailed justification of its purchase to Coburn in February, who later claimed that he was satisfied with the reply.

As Krauthammer explained to Fox News viewers on March 22, “Senator Coburn who isn’t exactly a liberal said number one the amount of ammunition is less than in previous years. Number two, it’s about a tenth of the ceiling that the DHS has allowed,” he said, adding, that the ammunition is “being used for the training of agents like the border security agents who have to go to the range a lot and stay sharp.”

“I hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, they’re gonna have to come up with something new and they will,” he concluded. Apparently, his fellow Fox News hosts and producers are still coming up short.

When you’re pushing a story that is too much even for Tom Coburn, Charles Krauthammer and Fox News, you might want to rethink your position. But their credulous readers are lapping it up:

Manufacturers need to cut them off. They’re preparing to use that ammo against us while most people can’t buy any to defend themselves. I smell the rat in the white house again…

The training they’re referring to consists of shooting the slow and unruly Americans so that they get good enough to hit the quick and unruly. Anyone who works for DHS had better decide now whether or not they are going to shoot and kill Americans and just “follow orders”, or if they are going to decide to tell their superiors, “HELL NO! We’re not going to shoot Americans nor violate their rights. It’s time that you superiors stood trial in front of the American people for treason.”…

They better buy as much they can. We are going to have terrorist attacks these next four years. They will be Mumbai style attacks all across the U.S. Start praying saints, Islamic locust are coming…..14 The Lord of hosts has sworn by Himself:

“Surely I will fill you with men, as with locusts,

And they shall lift up a shout against you.” Jeremiah 51:14…

What have they stockpiled now, one bullet for each of us, fifty times over? Can only imagine what evil these demons are planning…

He’s right, he can only imagine it. And even when it never actually happens, he’ll believe that his imagined horror has occurred.

According to a Salon article from earlier this week, there’s a huge wave of panicky gun-nuts buying up ammo before Obama allegedly bans them pursuant to Agenda 21 or something. And police departments are finding themselves short on ammo because of this latest fearmongering con-game.

  2. Brandon:

I can’t figure out how conspiracy nuts manage to maintain their beliefs. Don’t they ever start to notice that their dystopian visions aren’t actually happening?

  3. Katherine Lorraine, Tortue du Désert avec un Coupe-Boulon:

They are law enforcement agents. They have arresting authority. They can (and are likely to) be shot at performing their jobs. They need ammunition.

My wingnut brother gives me ammo nearly every X-mas, to the point I bet I’ve got about 2,000 rounds stored around the house.
I wonder whether I should sell some of it now or wait for the market to peak at about $10 per bullet.
If only Obama would do a recess appointment of Bill Ayers to a cabinet position or a militant, black, Muslim, lesbian socialist to the Supreme Court. I bet they would pay $100, or more.

  5. inquisitiveraven:

The thing that gets me is that the purpose of the purchase is right there in the description of the rounds: “Commercial leaded training ammo (CLTA) Pistol .40 caliber 165 grain, jacketed hollow point.”

  6. DaveL:

Estimates are that there about 50 million gun-owning households in the United States, and that our total domestic production of small arms cartridges is 12 billion rounds per year. So if we simply divide the one by the other we can see that our manufacturing base allows for an average of 240 rounds per household per year, or 20 rounds per month.

That’s nothing. That isn’t even one round of skeet, or one box of handgun ammunition. What this means is that the only reason there ever was ammo on the shelves in the first place is that large numbers of gun owning households hardly ever touch their guns. It also means that all that is necessary for the industry to be totally overwhelmed is a relatively small shift in the habits of the gun-owning public.

But no – it has to be a government conspiracy.

  7. Moggie:

Manufacturers need to cut them off.

What? What are you, some kind of communist? This is the manufacturers making money. On the contrary, what they need to do is not only fill those orders, but also fan the flames of this conspiracy theory so that they can sell even more ammo to scared wingnuts. That’s capitalism.

  8. timgueguen:

Just watch. Sooner or later WND will be ranting about defense cutbacks, and how the Obama administration is leaving America in danger of a jihadist takeover because it’s not buying enough bullets for the military and DHS.

  9. jamessweet:

Wait, the DHS is buying fewer bullets than they did in previous years? Oh noes, it’s a conspiracy by the Obama administration to slowly defund homeland security until the agents are so poorly trained that they can be easily overrun by an invading Kenyan Al Qaeda army!

When you’re pushing a story that is too much even for Tom Coburn, Charles Krauthammer and Fox News, you might want to rethink your position.

But the teabaggers have figured out that Faux News is no longer far enough to the right of Attila the Hun and have, therefore, joined the EVIL LIBRUL CONSPIRACY and you can’t trust what they say anymore.

Don’t they ever start to notice that their dystopian visions aren’t actually happening?

    Not on their home planet.

  12. Modusoperandi:

Yout don’t understand, Ed Brayton. It’s even worse than the so-called “consipiracy theorists” think.

THEY’RE BUYING ALL THIS AMMO TO FIRE OFF IN CELEBRATION AFTER THE SOON TO COME GAY MUSLIN WEDDINGS!

  13. democommie:

    “GAY MUSLIN WEDDINGS!”

Oh, dear, I think not! Muslin is far too hot for summer, satin tulle is the thing, with a nice Desert Eagle shoulder holster in Shantung silk. Get with the program, Modus!

Anyone who works for DHS had better decide now whether or not they are going to shoot and kill Americans
And I thought that law enforcement regularly shoots and kills American criminals every day…

  15. aldenutter:

What’s actually great about this story is that it creates the means for the story to move forward in the heads of the paranoid right. Who is going to round up and kill all the Real True Patriots? The Military? No. They’re on our side. The Police? No. Our side. Government Bureaucrats? There we go!

  16. chilidog99:

I have been following this story for a while now, and one of the unfortunate things is that even the DHS press corps is apparently unable to read and understand their own solicitation for bids.

There is no solicitation for bid for 750 million rounds, either over a single year, or over five years.

On Apeil 17, 2012, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA issued a bid request for the purchase of approximately 10 to 15 million rounds of training ammunition per year for five years for a total of about 63 million rounds.

This was to be an Indefinite Selivery, Indefinite Quantity contract. Unfortunately, in the original bid solicitation, there was an error. It stated that the minimum purchase under the contract was 1000 rounds (1 unit), and that the maximum quantity allowed under the contract was set at 70 million rounds per year.

On August 16, 2012 an amendment was issued that clarified that the maximum purchase under the terms of the contract would be 70 million rounds over the life of the contract (5 years).

On August 19, 2012, an anti-government blogger posted an on-line rant about the “750 million round purchase”

As far as I can tell, this is the first time that the 750 million number was posted, but I am not going on Infowars to see if that was the original source for that figure.

On February 14, 2013, an article was posted on AP by Alicia Caldwell attributing the 750 million round claim to a DHS spokesperson. But since this appears to have been a verbal statement, I have no way of verifying if that was what was acrually said.

In any case, the billions of rounds claim appears to be based on an outright prevarication, faulty math, or a combination if both.

Oh, and one last note, the contract for the 70 million rounds of training ammo? As far as I can tell, it has not been awarded.

  17. chilidog99:

One more item. Yes, a contract for the purchase of 450 million rounds over five years was awarded to ATK last year. This is the same company that had the previous five year contract under which about 500 million rounds were purchased. This ammo was purchased for the use by ICE individual offices for local training and duty use.

ATK is a government contractor that operates the US Army ammunition plant in Lake City, MO.

They do not manufacture ammunition for retail sales. So the conspiracy theory that this is a back door attempt at gun controll is full of shit.

    Fifthdentist #4:

My wingnut brother gives me ammo nearly every X-mas, to the point I bet I’ve got about 2,000 rounds stored around the house.

I hope “around the house” is not literally true, and that you keep your many bullets in a safe or at least safely locked away. I am not sure about the laws in the US, but in countries that regulate arms and ammunition tightly/sensibly it is usually a requirement.

E.g. in the Netherlands a gun owner will lose their license if gun and ammunition are not kept in a safe, or if they are not stored separate from each other.

  19. chilidog99:

    @Olav LOL

Naw, in the US, we keep our ammo in the fridge, next to the kid’s juice drinks.

  20. Olav:

Chilidog, an American of my acquaintance kept his shotgun shells on a shelf with the other groceries, where they would be (too) easy to grab. Small sample, I know, but he acted as if this was completely normal.

I always wondered what kind of pigeons or ducks he was planning to shoot inside his house.

  21. gingerbaker:

“They are law enforcement agents. They have arresting authority. They can (and are likely to) be shot at performing their jobs. They need ammunition”.

Calling DHS “law enforcement agents” is pushing it. They pretty much have one shitty law to enforce – the Patriot Act.

Have they ever been shot at? (Hell, have they ever caught a real terrorist, for that matter?) Should we expect them to ever be shot at? One would think that these fellows would get their job done by using various surveillance, and the last thing they need to be is trading barrages with so-called terrorists.

IF the reported numbers of ammo rounds is correct, that is an awful lot of cartridges for a shadowy group of folks, who range from extraordinary renditioners to the people who pat down grandma in her wheelchair at the airport. Who the fuck are these people shooting at?

Ed – you spend a fair amount of time, and properly so, talking about the paramiliterianism of our police forces. Here is a new shadowy government group getting armed to the teeth to a degree which doesn’t, to my admittedly uninformed ears, necessarily sound justified.

You know, just because some right-wing loons, for the wrong reasons, shout foul on an issue doesn’t necessarily make the issue all hunky dory. The DHS can make you simply disappear. I also want to know why they need two billion rounds of ammo .

  22. chilidog99:

The DHS include Customs and border protection, ICE, TSA, the Secret Service, the Coast Guard, and The Federal Law Enforcement Training Crnter.

FLETC is responsible for training many of the other officers from other branches required to cary weapons as well.

  23. chilidog99:

I’m not a big fan of the DHS, but bashing them over this issue is nothing more than conspiracy theory mongering.

  24. chilidog99:

Gingerbaker, there are two major purchasers of ammo under the DHS. (Ignoring the Coast Guard)

    ICE, and the FLETC.

Almost all of which is used in training.

Furthermore, if you bothered to read my post above, the amount of ammunition purchased has been greatly exaggerated.

They go through about a 100 million rounds per year which equalls to the equivalent of a about four weekends of target shooting for every federal LEO.

  25. gingerbaker:

Good to know – thanks. I stand corrected

  26. democommie:

I keap my roundz right next to the bug spray and drain cleaner (the one in the pretty, pink “single serving” container with the smiley face P-trap label) right under the sink, where they belong. One of these days I gotta get the door back on that cabinet.

  27. Nancy New, Queen of your Regulatory Nightmare:

The shortages are very real, and we had the same issue with Obama’s initial presidential election the first time as well. We’re having a hell of a hard time keeping common projectiles and casings in stock to do our testing. We hear from suppliers that people are buying up large quantities of ammunition, even if it doesn’t fit a firearm they own, just in case.

  28. Michael Heath:

    Nancy New asserts:

The shortages are very real [1], and we had the same issue with Obama’s initial presidential election the first time as well [2]. We’re having a hell of a hard time keeping common projectiles and casings in stock to do our testing [3]. We hear from suppliers that people are buying up large quantities of ammunition, even if it doesn’t fit a firearm they own, just in case.[4]

Citations requested for assertions numbered 1 – 3.

Assertion #4: “We hear . . . ” Second-hand anecdotal claims isn’t very compelling evidence; nor is first-hand for that matter.
