Rush Limbaugh, apparently concerned that he may be losing the truly paranoid loonies to Glenn Beck, said recently on his radio show that health care reform was not about getting health insurance for the uninsured, it was all about recreating the Third Reich:
This is not about free health care for people, this is not about making sure the poor and the disadvantaged or middle class people who can’t afford it have healthcare. It’s never been about that for Obama. It’s about the government running it. Once the government has control over your healthcare, they control every aspect of your life. And as important as healthcare is to everybody, if the government says you gotta do A, B and C in order to get healthcare, you’ll do it. You’ll be too scared not to. Healthcare has always been, nationalized healthcare has always been one of the first objectives of any of the famous totalitarian regimes. Hitler, national socialism, first thing he did, nationwide healthcare. The socialists in the UK, nationwide healthcare. You get that and you control everything about how people live.
Yes, of course. Before Hitler sent six million Jews to death, he first made sure they had access to health insurance. Every historian knows that! And if this were true, why hasn’t the UK turned into a fascist nightmare? They’ve had truly nationalized health care since 1946, immediately after Hitler was defeated, yet they haven’t turned into a totalitarian country. Gee, it’s almost like this argument is total bullshit, isn’t it?
Of course, the Affordable Care Act is nothing even remotely like a “government takeover of health care” or nationalized health care. It’s subsidized private insurance. If it were nationalized health care, there wouldn’t be any more insurance companies and the government would own all the hospitals and control access. They don’t.
