Fun With the CPAC Exhibitors

CPAC is the biggest gathering of conservatives in the country every year and, unsurprisingly, it attracts all the usual suspects making bizarre claims — not only from the stages in the various sessions but in the exhibition hall too. ThinkProgress reviews some of the ideas being pushed by those who have tables at the event.

1. Marxists Control The Catholic Church. Fringe fundamentalist Cliff Kincaid’s organization America’s Survival is handing out a brochure warning Roman Catholics that the church “has been compromised philosophically — not only by infiltrators from the homosexual movement and Marxists. but by adherents of the so-called ‘New Age’ philosophy.” So vast is the communist infiltration within the Catholic Church, one “Catholic insider” told the organization that the bishops “made a deal with the devil to get Obamacare passed.”

2. The UN Will Take One-Quarter Of America’s Land. The American Jobs Alliance, a conservative business advocacy group, is handing out hundreds of fliers warning attendees of the dangers posed by the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an undeniably controversial free trade agreement that the United States is currently negotiating with a handful of South Pacific nations. Instead of reasoned criticism however, AJA sounds the alarm over Sharia Law, and claims that the Partnership “cedes 1/4 of U.S. to Foreign Control. A quarter of the entire U.S. land area will fall under UN court jurisdiction.”

The UN is always a popular boogeyman for the right, which ignores the fact that we have veto power over anything the UN does. On Planet Wingnuttia, the UN (and the League of Nations before that) is perpetually on the verge of taking over America. The fact that it never actually happens, and can’t happen, matters not at all to them.

    Marxists Control The Catholic Church

The nearest the Catholic Church got to Marxism was liberation theology, which was condemned by JPII and both subsequent popes including Frankie – who as a South American Bishop had every chance to know what he was rejecting.

Is there a left-of-centre* equivalent to the CPAC in the US? Does it similarly attract proponents of bizarre ideas from the other side of the fence?

*That is, what passes for ‘left of centre’ in the US and would generally be considered moderately right-wing here in Canada.

@matty1 #1 – Actually, while Bergoglio was Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Argentina, he was appointed by JPII to head the Inquisition in Latin America against liberation theology. His great success — how often do you hear of liberation theology as an existing set of practices these days? — is what won him the violet in 1992, the archdiocese of Buenos Aires in 1997, and the scarlet in 2001. From priest to cardinal in 9 years, that is an extraordinarily fast promotion in the church.

Seems like they aren’t even trying.

    1. Where is the nation ending threat that is UN Agenda 21 warnings? Even Ted Cruz, the not very bright senator from Texas knows all about his one?

    2. Space Reptiles!!! Such is their power that they are frequently ignored even by lunatic fringers.

    3. I assume a wide variety of tinfoil hats were being sold. They protect against mind control rays, HAARP weapons, and chemtrails.

Sure, I can see Communists viewing having to buy private health insurance or pay a penalty as bad, but if memory serves, the Catholic hierarchy was against Obamacare doing something that it didn’t (and couldn’t) do, and the agreement was President Barack Devil Obama signing an order saying that Obamacare would not do the thing it already was not doing.

It’s almost as though this Catholic Communist Conspiracy is fictional.

Noooo! Our veto power is in the Security Council only, which means only that blue-helmeted stormtroopers won’t be wresting one quarter of our land from Merkins by force. In the General Assembly, we’re just a little fish in a big pond, amirite? Don’t let one inch of our sacred territory fall under Sharia law! REMEBER AGENDA 21!!!11!!!lelebenty!!!!excalmationpoint!!!

You need the secret decoder ring that reveals that this is only further proof that they’re luring us into a false sense of security.

But seriously? No lizard people? No fluoride conspiracies? No RFIDs are the mark of the Beast?

Please tell me there was at least one Alex Jones disciple screaming about “murder pills.”

I find snark is usually the best response to that point when seriously made.

“oh dearie me, the general assembly might pass a resolution disapproving of the united states, whatever shall we do if that happens?”

The UN is always a popular boogeyman for the right

Well, for this time I’ll let it pass. The TPP is really horrible, a one-percenter pipe dream. If a part of the Republican base is opposing it, even if it’s for completely wrong-headed reasons, I, for one, am not complaining.

  11. AsqJames says

The way the UN is demonised by many people seems to swing wildly from “it’s a useless talking shop that never gets anything done. Yeah great, pass another resolution, that’ll scare [insert country/leader here]…NOT!” to “it’s on the verge of being so powerful it’ll take over all the US west of the Mississippi, march all the Christians to Canada and force them to become socialists!”

Of course part of the purpose of the latter may be to keep the UN feeble enough so they can keep laying the former charge, I just find it odd that people who should be able to remember Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda seem to genuinely think the UN is capable of somehow negating US democratic and military power.

  12. kantalope says

At the UN you don’t invade the US with the army you want…you, um, invade the US with the army you don’t have?

Once the US Army gets the orders from the UN…why they’ll salute and march on Washington in a minute. And since they are already in Washington it will be just that much easier.

So were the bishops so incompetent in their negotiations with the devil that they forgot to insist on a “no contraception coverage” clause in Obamacare?

Or did the devil, being devilish and all, agree to all of the bishops’ “no contraception” demands, but then include not just contraception coverage, but free contraception coverage, in the Obamacare provisions?

” From priest to cardinal in 9 years, that is an extraordinarily fast promotion in the church.”

He may have just be a priest but he was no ordinary priest – he was Superior of the Jesuit order in Argentina.

As I understand it, that makes him the second-most senior Jesuit in the country.

All right, let’s get this straight; no one uses tinfoil anymore; it’s aluminum foil these days.
