Land Gives Perkins His Namesake Award

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council proudly received the 2012 Richard Land Distinguished Service Award from Land himself this past weekend. The award is given by the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, Dr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention, will present the 2012 Richard Land Distinguished Service Award to Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins. Mr. Perkins, a former Louisiana legislator, will receive the award from Dr. Land at his home church, Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, when Dr. Land preaches there this Sunday.

The ERLC chose Mr. Perkins as the 2012 award recipient for, among other things, “boldly proclaiming Judeo-Christian values as a noble Christian spokesman for faith, family, and freedom in the public square as president of the Family Research Council since 2003.”

Yes, this is the same Richard Land who was reprimanded by the ethics commission that he remains the president of for “hurtful, irresponsible, insensitive, and racially charged words on March 31, 2012 regarding the Trayvon Martin tragedy” and for plagiarism. They also canceled his radio show. But he’s still giving out awards with his own name on them. How amusing.

I guess instead of scrapping the award, they just decided to lower the standards to match their new perception of Land – after all, when the standard of using “hurtful, irresponsible, insensitive, and racially charged words” is applied, Tony Perkins has indeed earned some distinction.

Do people really name awards after themselves while they are still alive? I mean, I could see if it was a large endowment or something, maybe a scholarship fund or charitable grant of some sort, but just handing out awards with your name on them?

Seems like you should give the damn thing to yourself and be done with it.
