Paul Ryan: For the Sequester Before It Was Obama’s Fault

I’m sure it will come as a huge shock to you all to find out that Paul Ryan was a big fan of the sequester before he suddenly decided it was a terrible and it was all Obama’s fault. Not only did he vote for it, he argued for it over and over again on TV and on the House floor.

That damn Obama is making them contradict himself. Is there no depth to which he won’t sink?

I’m a big fan of Paul Ryan. He has an amazing ability to take a farrago of lies, half-truths, and slogans, and appear completely honest, sincere, and thoughtful while presenting them. No wonder he’s considered the policy wonk of the Republican caucus. (Warning, kids: wonking like this is ok, but remember to wash your hands afterwards.)

Sure, but when he was for it he assumed President Romney would rubber stamp whatever the House Republicans wanted.

    Yeah me too.

All the intellectual power of Sarah Palin minuses all her formidable entertainment skills.

Paul Ryan is supposed to be the numbers guy economic maven of the Tea Party. I’ve never, ever seen him say one thing that indicates a functioning brain.

During the campaign, I tried to analyze Romney’s and Ryan’s economic policies. Didn’t get too far. There weren’t any. I suspect they knew if the disclosed them, no one sane would vote for them.

IIRC, Ryan’s was to close tax loopholes and balance the budget. Which is simply impossible. And closing tax loopholes doesn’t lower taxes, it redistributes them.

I’m still trying to figure out how the sequester is all Obama’s fault. Sure, it was proposed by Obama, but it was passed by a large majority of both houses of Congress. And it is Congress alone — specifically, the House of Representatives — that decides how much money will be available to the federal government and where that money will come from.

    What am I missing?

You’re missing the core reasonning of Ryan & co: here: allow me to summarize it for you:

We’ll never win any national election anymore unless we bully the plebs into submission. It does not matter if they realize we are bullshiting them: what’s matter is that they know we can still hurt them and will do anything to bring them down with us unless they become the submissive, obedient little serfs we want them to be

Or as republicans call it, “Principle”.
