Klayman Trying to Stop Arpaio Recall

Larry Klayman, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Mat Staver or Orly Taitz, is now representing a Tea Party group that is trying to prevent a petition drive to recall fascist Sheriff Joe Arpaio from office. Funny, doesn’t Klayman claim to be all about bringing accountability to power? I guess that only applies to non-wingnuts in power.

A group supporting metropolitan Phoenix’s sheriff demanded Wednesday that organizers of an effort to recall the lawman immediately end their campaign, and vowed to go to court to stop them.

Citizens To Protect Fair Election Results contends the recall effort against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is unconstitutional and intended to harass him and prevent him from carrying out his duties. Recall organizers say the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America should be ousted, in part, because his office failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases. They also allege Arpaio’s office put immigration enforcement above other law enforcement priorities…

Larry Klayman, a lawyer representing the pro-Arpaio group, said that if the recall effort continues, his group will file legal action against its organizers alleging they violated the free speech, equal protection and due process rights of the majority of county voters who re-elected the sheriff.

“There are no valid reasons for this recall petition,” Klayman said. “Nothing happened between the day of the election, the swearing-in of Sheriff Arpaio and this recall petition.”

So what? It’s up to the voters to decide whether there is good reason to recall him from office, no matter how recently the election was held. There is no requirement that recall drives be for reasons Larry Klayman thinks are valid. If this was a liberal group trying to stop a recall drive against a liberal politician, Klayman would be screaming from the rooftops about how they were trying to destroy democracy. It’s all about whose ox is being gored.

    Mmmm roast ox.

    Sorry you were saying?

  2. slc1:

Gee, I don’t recall schmuck Klayman complaining about the recall of California Governor Gray Davis, shortly after he was reelected.

  3. democommie:

It may be too much for Lieyer Klayman to handle. I hope they have Orly Taint AND Mat Staver available as well the TMLC*, and whatever other alphabet soup of bad KKKristianist/ReiKKKwing legal groups are out there. It would be good to see them squander millions on an asshole Arpiehole. Hey, maybe Numbchuck Norris and Stevie Segal could just face kick every person who signs the recall petition?

    * If it’s not yet about Shurf Joe Arpiehole’s religious freedom, it soon will be.

Being mean to Arpaio is probably sharia law, or something. And guns!

Exactly how racist and/or stupid is the typical Maricopa County voter? Arpaio reeks of corruption and incompetence, combined with poorly hidden racism, yet they keep voting him into office. Of course voting for the head of a police department seems foolish to many of us in the first place.

  6. Alverant:

Isn’t a petition considered free speech? So another con is against our fundamental freedoms because he doesn’t like how certain people are using it.

    @ Alverant:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Yeah, it’s in the First Amendment that conservatives conveniently skip over unless, as Ed noted, it’s their ox being gored.

Who else would Arpaio have to support him but a child fondler like Leisure Suit Larry?

Joe seems to surround himself with some unsavory types.

    Re chilidog99 @ #8

child fondler like Leisure Suit Larry

That’s a pretty serious charge, even against a fucktard like Klayman. Citation needed.

So Sheriff Joe’s defense is in the proven hands of Larry Klayman? That’s good news, it means he’s as good as toast, like all of Klayman’s clients.

Seriously, though, I’m sure Klayman knows that his arguments are bunk. It doesn’t matter, because his job isn’t winning, his job is providing cover – he might get laughed out of the courtroom (once again), but he’s laid the foundation for the immortal “Sheriff Joe’s removal was blatantly unconstitutional” legend. That’ll increase Sheriff Joe’s marketability on the wingnut speaking circuit, should the recall succeed.

  11. baal:

I read the title and thought that at least they have the right man for the job. Klayman doesn’t exactly win that often.

Recall elections have got to be among the dumbest ideas going in writing (small r) republican constitutions.

He has a sufficient base of ultra-conservative, mostly white, older voters that think he’s fantastic, racism and all. It’s shrinking rapidly.

He has also managed to get in some vote-splitting “independents” to dilute his opponent’s votes:

    indeed.

This is first thing that pops up:

    http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2012/09/bradlee_deans_attorney_larry_klayman_allegedly_sexually_abused_his_own_children.php

  15. Ichthyic:

The magistrate heard evidence from the children’s pediatrician who reported allegations of sexual abuse to children services, and from a social worker at children services who found that sexual abuse was “indicated.”

so, not a totally baseless accusation it seems.

  16. Ichthyic:

and, I might note, even the “real” Leisure Suit Larry, while a completely sleazbag misogynistic character, wasn’t an abuser.

  17. Ichthyic:

oh, and while we’re at it, note the connection to Bradlee Dean, since Dean himself was mentioned in a very slightly later story on Ed’s blog.
