Rep. Louis Gohmert, who really must be the dumbest man in Congress (sorry, Steve King; keep trying), went on a right wing talk show and offered up a novel argument against gun control — it’s needed to stop the impending Sharia takeover of the country.
[The Second Amendment] is for our protection and the founders’ quotes make that very very clear and including against a government that would run amuck. We’ve got some people who think Sharia Law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there… to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed.
The basic strategy is this: Whatever scares you the most, no matter how unlikely it is, that’s the key reason we need guns. Guns will protect us against whatever you fear — Obama, Muslims, demons, witches, gay people. And prayer. You must pray while you’re shooting.
Isn’t it odd that the same people who are so fond of exploiting the fear of a Muslim takeover of America by replacing the Constitution with Sharia law, something so wildly unlikely as to be virtually impossible, would be thrilled to have the Bible replace the Constitution?

Except, of course, that the stringency of gun control is extremely weakly correlated to the oppressiveness of governments (m ≈ -0.003 & r ≈ 0.001), over 140+ countries.
Bang goes that argument*.

Oh, it’s Rep. Gohmert of the ludicrous “terror babies” conspiracy theory of 2010! With another ludicrous theory that the US is somehow in danger of becoming a “Muslim Nation”, and that guns will somehow stop this? Yeah, it’s stupid but it’s also quite dangerous that extremist freaks like Gohmert can get elected and hold onto districts.

Guns could also be used to enforce sharia law.
Seems they always forget the part of the equation where the other person has a gun, too.

I have been a fan* of congressman Gohmert since the BP hearings. Someone should really compile a “greatest hits” video for us.
*In the same way I’m a fan of Miss Teen South Carolina 2007 and Kellie Pickler

Name them then. Look of course Islamists want Sharia to be the law everywhere but that doesn’t mean there is an organised movement to enforce it where you are let alone that such a movement has much support.

If it weren’t for the fact it’s a load of racist claptrap the supposed Sharia law menace would be a possible winning argument for gun control. “See, we need to register guns so we know who has them when jihadists rise up to try to impose Sharia law on us!” Then again knowing the stupidity of some of the folks who believe in such things they probably think Muslims don’t understand guns, and would instead use scimitars in their insurgency.

Yes, because its been proven over and over, again in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and about a half dozen other countries. The places where filthy, rotten, islamigunz haven’t won the day is in those places where other groups have been in charge of the gummint and had effective miltiaries and police agencies to keep things from going critical. It was not that the civilians were armed to the teeth.

It’s true. A key tenet of Sharia is that people following it must disarm. And that is why we must invade those radical Islamist Shariacrats in Iran before they get nukular weppinz!

Don’t count Steve King out just yet. That’s an impressive piece of wingnuttery from Gohmert, sure, but there’s still a bit of room downward. We haven’t yet heard the ultimate wingnutty argument for gun ownership yet, but I’m sure it’s only a question of time until somebody makes it: We need guns so pregnant (white, Christian) teenagers can defend their unborn children against their (black, atheist) boyfriends that want to pressure them into an abortion. I’m counting the days.

How well do guns work against Space Reptiles, Mormons, Elves, Fairies, and Pixies?
How well do guns work against stupid Tea Party politicians from Texas named Gohmert?

If a law were proposed banning Muslims from owning guns, would Gohmerts be for it or against it?

I think Stephen King is still ahead on points. After all, he’s the guy who went on a complete rant about how it was perfectly legal to kidnap a 12 year old girl, rape her, and then take her across state lines for an abortion.
Louie “Terror Babies” Ghomert is putting up a good showing, but he’s got a ways before he can top that.
