Hateful bigots Matt Barber and Mat Staver are throwing a fit over the Boy Scouts possibly allowing gay people to be scouts and troop leaders. And predictably they are equating gays with pedophiles and saying that allowing gay scout leaders is like allowing Jerry Sandusky to run a troop.
Of course, the vast majority of child molestation is perpetrated by fathers and uncles. So by their “reasoning,” we should forbid all fathers and uncles from being involved in scouting.

Let’s see, Jerry Sandusky was a well respected member of the community in a long term, stable, and tradtional marriage. Doesn’t that fit the description of the vast majority of scout leaders?

Wasn’t Sandusky’s charity named from a Christian parable? Sounds like he fit right in. And as Who Knows pointed out, these guys would’ve passed up a gay couple’s adoption request in favor of someone like Sandusky.

Yes, at least one of Sandusky’s kids was adopted and has come forward as one of his abuse victims.
There was an episode of South Park where the parents were dismayed to find out the new scout master was Big Gay Al. When they complained, the leadership replaced him with a guy who looked like a drill Sargent and, of course, took naked pictures of the boys.

All I know is that I was a scout for several years in the 1960′s, when gay scout leaders were already a cliche, and nobody did anything untoward to me. And not because I wouldn’t have suited them — as I learned from other encounters in life.

The comment posts in the couple of articles I read about the BSA and gays at the Wall Street Journal were predominately from commenters defectively conflating gays with pedophiles to justify their bigotry, hatred, fear, and sometimes I presume – unconscious/covert lust, of gay males.

This has been the overriding theme in all the “Christian” commentaries on the Boy Scouts — we’ve heard it from FRC (Tony Perkins), AFA (Sandy Rios), and at least one other whose name escapes me. What’s interesting is that they seem to be reserving those comments for “in-house” vehicles — Staver and Barber on “Faith & Freedom,” Rios on her own radio show, etc., so they’re not reaching that big an audience. Of course, since Perkins got called on it by Soledad O’Brien, maybe they figure that’s wisest.
