Here’s a hint for the wingnuts: If your rhetoric is so idiotic that even Bishop Harry Jackson thinks you’ve gone too far, you might want to dial it back a bit. Right wing radio host Rick Wiles had Jackson on his show and, during his introduction, said this:
Wiles: Last year, Barack Obama spiritually sodomized the US armed forces by compelling American generals to accept his demand that the military alter its code of moral conduct and permit homosexuals and lesbians to openly serve in the military.
Furthermore, he commanded the military to extend financial benefits to same-sex couples in the military. Additionally, military chapels on US military bases were ordered to permit homosexual marriage ceremonies inside the facilities.
The Boy Scouts of America is the next target of the socialist Obamanistas. Last week the Irving, Texas-based organization delayed a decision until May on whether the scouting organization will change its rules of conduct to allow homosexuals to serve as scout masters, troop leaders, and as Boy Scouts.
What will be the spiritual consequences of the American people allowing Barack Obama to spiritually sodomize the nation? Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr is on the telephone; I’m going to him that question.
Bishop Jackson, welcome to the program.
Jackson: Well Rick, I’m glad to be with you. You have quite a way with words. That was an intense introduction.
Wiles: Am I being over-dramatic in saying that Barack Obama has spiritually sodomized the nation?
Jackson: In some ways. Let me say it this way, your summary is clear, concise, and it’s true but I would say it like this: his administration is, in fact, the culmination of the downward cycle, morally, that I believe our nation has been in for some time.
Spiritual sodomy does sound like fun though, doesn’t it?

At this point I’m not sure that “socialist” has any meaning anymore. It seems to be sprinkled into American political rhetoric with the same frequency and with much the same meaning bestowed upon the rest of the sentence that “like” is in some forms of casual English speech these days.

A downward cycle? That’s one of those cycles with the front wheel smaller than the back wheel, isn’t it?

While I do enjoy the occasional Laphroaig, I have never heard it described with a subtle peaty taste before.

Given that the military published multiple reports recommending the repeal of DADT, it’s safe to say in this case that they were literally asking for it.

More seriously, what does the BSA have to do with any of this? AFAIK, there is zero excutive branch action related to this private club’s policy-making.

As I’ve always said, I have yet to encounter a use of the word “spiritual” that would not be better served by either “mental”, “emotional”, or “imaginary”.
In this case, it definitely “imaginary”. The only question is why Wiles puts so much energy into imagining acts of sodomy.

I like the image of chapels being given orders. My guess is that they just continue to sit there like the inanimate buildings they are. Or, were they resisting, holding their doors shut, chiming (since they can’t talk), “No gay marriages in me!”?
On another note, I really wish people would stop saying things like this:
I’ve followed enough of Canadian politics to know that this is not fucking true. You could fairly say that the Overton window is to the left of where it is in the U.S., but not by that much. That goes for the Europeans, too.

What does “allowing homosexuals to serve” have to do with “rules of conduct”? I’m trying here, and I’ve even got my helper, Mr. Bourbon. I can’t seem to connect a change in the “rules of conduct” with allowing a type of person to serve.

@dugglebogey: Not necessarily. Virulent homophobia, in my experience, better correlates with a certain variety of misogyny, along with a willful misunderstanding of how homosexual relationships work: A misogynist would be horrified at the idea that a man would treat him the way he himself would treat a woman, and they think that gay sex is about one party taking the female role.
Here’s my rule. If the homophobe’s rhetoric focuses on fear of sexual assault by a man, he’s probably a misogynist; if he focuses on “overcoming temptation” and “gay lifestyle”, he’s closeted. (Note also that this can be a both/and rule.)

mithrandir knows what’s up. Homophobia by men correlates very strongly with misogyny and a fear of being “the woman”, although homophobes that talk a lot about how goshdarn TEMPTING homosexuality is are likely to be closeted. They’re also likely to think that you’re not gay unless you actually have sex with those of the same gender, whereas EVERYBODY is attracted to them sometimes, right? (That’s the only context in which “tempted to be gay” makes any sense: The desire/attraction is already there, and the temptation is toward actions.)

@dingojack #39: That nearly-illegible and context-free graph still doesn’t support “our right-wingers are left of your left-wingers”, except in certain areas: “Religion” (duh), “Values” (whatever that means), and “National interest”. On “Ideology”, “Military action”, and “Climate change”, our left is well left of their right.
