Marriage Equality and Religious Freedom

Steve Crampton and Matt Barber of the absurdly named Liberty Counsel worked themselves up into quite a lather on Barber’s radio show last week, claiming that same-sex marriage “will eradicate us and they will not stop until the homosexual totalitarian view of the world is forcefully imposed on every American.”

All nonsense, of course. Allowing same-sex marriage will have exactly the same effect that allowing interracial marriage had on religious freedom. Churches and ministers will not be forced to perform same-sex marriages just like they aren’t forced to perform interracial marriages. But businesses that provide services to the public may have to provide those services regardless of sexual orientation depending on where they are located (sexual orientation isn’t covered under federal law or many state laws, but it is in some states and cities).

Just as there are some churches and some religious people who support same-sex marriage and some who don’t, there are some who support interracial marriage and some who don’t. Overturning laws against interracial marriage had exactly the same effect that overturning laws against same-sex marriage will have. So why isn’t religious liberty already crushed? Why isn’t Loving v Virginia imposing a racial totalitarian view of the world on every American? Oh wait, the same thing was claimed after 1967. It wasn’t true then and it isn’t true now.

But don’t you understand Ed? With the Civil Right and Loving v Virginia, it’s a whole liftestyle, a whole culture which has been destroyed: one where young white teenagers could lose their virginity by molesting the housemaid. Now the poor little boys are frightened into impotence, since they have to ask permission first,: life was sooooooooo much easier before

It’s even worst than he thinks. After Obama disarms all the patriotic, Christian defenders of the Bible and Constitution, neither of which they’ve read, he’s going to round up all the godly men and take them to garishly decorated FEMA camps where they will be drugged and forced to gay-marry and participate in days-long sweaty orgies.

    Also this:

Say what you will about HomoMussolini, but he made the Pride floats run on time.

they will not stop until the homosexual totalitarian view of the world is forcefully imposed on every American.

They’re going to round up the Christians and put them in concentration camps where they will be dressed like characters from The Wizard of Oz.

I, for one, welcome our rainbow-clad overlords. (Seriously, they couldn’t fuck this whole system up any worse than my fellow straights have.)

“FEMA Camp”. It’s not just a place, anymore!

I love that the ad opposite the comment box shows a middle-aged white guy, one who’s apparently just got “downsized” and is sitting there with his box of “personal effects”. They’re pushing “Emergency Essentials”. I guess that when teh GAY are allowed to marry and not reproduce that they will not just be stealin’ REAL MurKKKan’s freedom but their jobs as well.

On a related (oh the world will end now) note, the Colorado senate has passed a civil union bill which is expected to be signed into law and be in effect by May. Cheers to CO!!

I expect howls of protest from Bryan Fischer in Colorado Springs but tough shit Bryan.

MikeMa, Colorado also has legal weed, so I’m guessing this state is not initiating the kind of stoning that Fischer had in mind for teh gheys.

Obviously, Colorado plans on bringing about the End Times by holding lots of weddings for gay stoners.

This is, of course, what they are really afraid of. That it will affect the social acceptability of their belief as much as legalization did interracial marriage. They’re afraid that their children will grow up accepting gays and – if they are Christian – will reject the notion that bigotry against gays has anything to do with the ‘real Christian message.’ They’re afraid that the mainstream interpretation of their religion will change to be more liberal.

And they are right, IMO; legalizing SSM will speed up the process of making all of that happen.
