Judge Tells Taitz to Defend Her Lies

Orly Taitz may be in serious trouble with another judge. A federal judge in California has ordered Taitz to show cause why the court should not sanction her for lying when she failed to disclose a libel suit filed against her by a rival birther.

SCOTUS Denies Cert in Ill. Police Recording Case

Very good news out of DC. The U.S. Supreme Court denied cert in an appeal by the state of Illinois of a lower court ruling striking down that state’s law against recording police officers on duty. That leaves the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in place.

Wingnuts: Feminists Are ‘Selfish, Narcissistic, Family-Destroying Whores’

Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner of Generations Radio spend pretty much their entire show every day saying things that are abysmally inane. But this exchange is over the top, even for them. They think Sarah Palin is a feminist, but only a mildly bad one. The really bad ones…well, just watch. Right Wing Watch has …

NBA Star Talks About His Two Mothers

Kenny Faried is one of my favorite players in the NBA. He’s this generation’s Ben Wallace, came out of a small school and just plays with a ferocity and relentlessness that is great to watch. And guess what? He has two lesbian mothers. And he made a video with them in support of marriage equality …

Driscoll: Obama Doesn’t Know God

The responses from the religious right to President Obama’s second inauguration continue to flow in, especially on Twitter, each one seemingly more absurd than the last. But I think Mark Driscoll of the Mars Hill megachurch in Seattle is probably right about this one:

Dean Goes Full Godwin

Bradlee Dean isn’t just tipping his toe in the water of Lake Godwin, he’s doing a cannonball off the dock while yelling “the Nazis are coming, the Nazis are coming!” In his latest insipid Worldnutdaily column, he compares America to Germany in the 1930s, failing to stop President Obama’s headlong rush to fascism. “Are we …

Banning Abortion Increases Their Number?

A new study of abortion rates around the world finds that the rates are higher in countries where the procedure is illegal, and those abortions are, of course, unregulated and far less safe and a lot of women die as a result of botched illegal abortions.

Mikey, Justin Win Major Victory

Mikey Weinstein and Justin Griffith won a big victory over the enemies of church/state separation in the military when they forced the Pentagon to remove the cross from a building at a remote military base in Afghanistan. NBC News picked up on the story and quotes both of them:

Ooh, Wrestling With Demons

I’m a big fan of unintentional comedy, which is often funnier than the intentional variety. I especially tend to laugh when people are being absolutely serious while spouting the most ridiculous nonsense imaginable. Here’s a perfect example, a charismatic preacher telling the story of wrestling with demons.

Who’s Really ‘Hijacking’ the Civil Rights Movement?

Jeremy Hooper points out something that I’d somehow missed while discussing the religious right’s claim to being the true heirs of Martin Luther King. He quotes a Tweet sent out by Bryan Fischer recently that said, “When it comes to the loss of civil rights, Christian is the new black.” He replies:

Fischer: God Will Send Muslims to Kill Us Over Abortion

It’s a familiar refrain from the Christian right. “If the nation doesn’t prevent you from doing (fill in the blank — abortion, homosexuality, teaching evolution) God is going to punish us by (fill in the blank — floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, terrorist attacks.” Here’s Bryan Fischer playing Mad Libs for wingnuts:

NM Legislator Tries to Ban Abortion to ‘Preserve Evidence’

I should probably have reached the point where I can’t be shocked anymore by what any Republican politician does by now, but I apparently haven’t. You’d think the GOP would be staying a million miles away from any issue to do with abortion and rape, but one New Mexico legislator has submitted an appalling bill:

Reid Screwed Up Online Poker Legalization

Politico reports that Sen. Harry Reid screwed up a chance to legalize online poker, though I’m not really crazy about the way it was going to be done. He did manage to get some Republicans on board but then apparently bungled the opportunity to get the package through the Senate (whether it would have passed …

Dee Snider Isn’t Gonna Take It Anymore

Dee Snider, the lead singer of Twisted Sister, took a shot at our favorite lunatic rockstar, Ted Nugent, pointing out that despite his hyper-nationalist bullshit and macho blathering, he actually dodged the draft during the Vietnam War by crapping his pants.

Another Psychic Arrested for Fleecing Clients

Another “psychic” has been arrested for defrauding clients, this time in Crestline, California. This time the “psychic” told a client that she could remove a spirit that had attached itself to her if she brought her more than $9000 in cash in particular denominations:
