Tony Perkins’ Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council gave a self-fulfilling prophecy on his radio show, saying that gay people are innately more depressed and suicidal because of their “destructive lifestyle” and that therefore the “It Gets Better” project is a deceit.

Sexual relations outside the boundaries that God created them to be conducted in, in the union of marriage between a man and a woman, it’s not fulfilling, it’s not satisfying, in fact it leads us into more risky behavior, more dangerous behavior…the media doesn’t want that message out there and so there are…the It Gets Better campaign, something being put forth by Dan Savage and even with the support of the White House, it’s a very deceptive and destructive message.

And of course he does everything he possibly can to make sure it doesn’t get better, ever, for any gay person. He does everything he can to make sure that they are discriminated against in every conceivable way and that their lives are as miserable as possible.

It’s because he loves them sooooo much!

For God so loved the world that he sent hellfire and brimstone, and avenging angels to utterly destroy all people who did not live up to Tony Perkins’ narrow-minded and bigoted views.

    And then everyone died.

So all the OT dudes who shacked up with multiple wives, plus concubines, plus slaves were outside the sexual boundaries established by the sky monster?* Not to mention Lot banging his daughters.

“He does everything he can to make sure that they are discriminated against in every conceivable way and that their lives are as miserable as possible.”

Well, yeah, but he’s doing it in Christ’s love for the fags’ own good. (end snark)

    * I know, I know, gawd rewrote the script in the middle of the play, eliminating the necessity of taking the Old Testament seriously, except, obviously, for that bit about hating teh gheys.

Even if he’s right in his characterization, he’s wrong in his advice on what to do about it.

This is just the naturalistic fallacy; confusing is with ought. Humans do not have to leave the risk in some behavior just because it is ‘naturally’ risky. Is driving risky? Add seatbelts. Is jumping out of planes risky? Add parachutes. Is sex risky? Add prophylactics or birth control. Are relationships risky? Add social contracts…like marriage.

Of course, they already object to the last two using the same fallacy, so the fact that they use the same unreason here is no surprise. But the pithy answer to this complaint is: the It Gets Better program – like seat belts, parachutes, condoms, and social contracts – create a net social improvement in safety and prosperity, even though they are not perfect and some people might misuse or misunderstand those measures.

Err, I should add I don’t think he’s rght in his characterization. My “even if” was meant I’m treating this as a hypothetical, not agreeing with it.

If the real world will not conform to Perkins’ just world bias, then by golly he’ll make it conform!

Gay people will be unhappy, goddammit!

  8. matty1 says

He actually thinks that if gay teens are bullied enough they will just give up their sexuality and decide to be straight?

  9. dingojack says

Matty = perhaps he sees his fellow ‘Friends of Narnia’ as successes so therefore….

Hmmm if god is so disapproving of risky behaviours I’m guessing Tony has the mountains of cash he’s fleeced from the suckers in one of those low, low interest accounts, gottta avoid risk donchaknow!

It’s a gift from God you know. One Perkins is thankful for everyday. Bless his little heart.

Women report higher rates of depression after having babies. We should not encourage people to believe that the motherhood lifestyle is healthy.

Even given his premises, Perkins’ argument doesn’t follow (surprise!) The “It Gets Better” campaign would only be “deceptive and destructive” if it were arguing that being gay may feel unfulfilling, unsatisfying, risky, and dangerous right now but hey, don’t worry , kids, it gets better later on. You will eventually find fulfillment, satisfaction, comfort, and safety later on if you just stick it out and keep being gay.

If that was the campaign, then Perkins would be justified in his criticism — assuming he actually was, you know, justified in his criticism.

As it stands, he’s not even addressing the argument of the video. Homosexuality could be just as bad as he says it is and it will STILL get better for gay kids in that the bullying will stop. To be consistent Perkins would have to argue that the “It Gets Better” campaign is deceptive and destructive because the adult world is even more uniformly hostile and cruel to gay people than the schools are and thus the videos lead kids to expect a level of tolerance which will never occur. Which it isn’t reality.

    That’s only Perkins’ dream.
