I have begun writing a column in Secular World, published by Atheist Alliance International, on the subject of free speech around the world. The column is called Life Itself, a reference to Salman Rushdie’s statement, “Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself.” You can read excerpts from the current issue, including my column, here. But the full magazine is sent to all AAI members, so join up if you want to read it every quarter.

Congrats on the gig Ed. You’ve earned being considered by a broader audience.
In that article Ed reports:
These countries’ governments seek far broader protections than defamation, but instead even credible criticism.
A key attribute of enlightenment thinking is the rejection of holy dogma and claims of divine revelation, supplanted back then by human reason (done right) and now, empiricism as well. It’s these two elements that threaten religion’s ability to flourish.
