NOM Spokesperson Wants People Jailed for Buying Sperm

Jennifer Reback Morse, who heads the National Organizatino for Marriage’s Ruth Institute, went on a radio show recently and declared that anyone who “buys sperm” in order to conceive a child — you know, like lesbian parents often do — should be in jail. Because of God, or something. Jeremy Hooper has the audio and Zinnia Jones has the transcript:

This is the appalling thing right there, I mean right there is the problem, okay? The way almighty God created our bodies, a man and a woman are supposed to come together in an act of love to produce a new human being. This is the way God wants the human species to continue, as a participation in his divine love and in his divine creative power. That is what is imprinted into our bodies, that’s what we’re supposed to do, that’s what we need to do, that’s what we want to do.

And what we’re doing now, Todd, as a result of the sexual revolution and all its fruits, is that we are in full-on retreat from human relationship between a man and a woman in order to create that child. So going online to buy sperm from a stranger is about as far as you can possibly get from the participation in divine love and divine creation. The fact that these two women want to have sex with each other has no bearing whatsoever on whether this should be permitted or not. You know, buying sperm on Craigslist should be abolished. Buying sperm at all should be abolished. And furthermore, these people should be in jail, I’m afraid.

I mean, you know, honestly, I just can’t even imagine where people think this is going to lead. You know, because the child is no longer a gift from God and a fruit of human love participating in God’s love. The child is now a product, manufactured by adults, and therefore the child cannot be fully the equal of its parent. The object cannot be the equal of its producer or its maker, you know. And so the further we go down this path, the further away we are going from the true ideal of equality before God, of equality before one another, of treating one another with dignity. And the child becomes a kind of chattel. So the legal complications and the sort of ick factor of all of this, it’s important to sort all that out and look at it, but let’s not take our eye off that ball, which is that we have defaced the creator’s plan and intention here by this behavior.

As one commenter on the HRC blog said, “Keep talking, Jennifer.” The more she talks, the worse she makes NOM look.

To clarify, if a pregnancy results from rape, it’s because god wants it that way, but if the pregnancy is because you really want a baby and bought the sperm and deliberately inserted it, god doesn’t want it, but there s no way he can stop it.

…we have defaced the creator’s plan and intention here by this behavior.

So, why doesn’t the creator do something about it?

  3. cactusren says

So, is a child conceived from rape also not equal to others, since it wasn’t produced by “a man and a woman… com(ing) together in an act of love”? Wait, let me guess–rape is part of god’s plan, so that makes it all okay. Or rape isn’t part of god’s plan, but he decided to try and make something “good” out of a bad situation. I can never keep all that apologia straight…

I’d argue that a woman getting artificially inseminated because she wants to raise a child IS an act of love.

    Jennifer Morse:

I’m not nor have I’ve been ordered to retreat. I suggest Ms. Morse seek orders either elsewhere or nowhere.

Wow — I didn’t think Roback Morse could top herself, but this bit of word salad is an awe-inspiring achievement. That last paragraph would be hysterical if there were any possibility of self-awareness.

  6. Stacy says

So what about infertile heterosexuals who use other people’s sperm or eggs? Are they also contributing to Ick and the downfall of Everything?

  7. Larry says

Shoot. I just got venture capital funding for my new online startup CumToYou.com. It was gonna be a sort of Facebook-like site where you select the provider, provide your credit card number, and we’d ship the product directly to you. Men would sign up to be providers and we’d select those with only the finest credentials to provide us our inventory.

I was gonna be rich, I tells ya, Kim Kardashian-rich.

…”it’s what we want to do”? Well blatantly it isn’t otherwise the very “problem” she’s complaining about wouldn’t have arisen, would it? Jeebus but this woman’s an idiot.

Also, what’s she on about “The object cannot be the equal of its producer or its maker”? That doesn’t even make sense. Viable sperm plus viable egg equals baby. It doesn’t matter if the the sperm is applied with a turkey baster and the foetus is grown in a petri dish, or whatever sick version of Artificial Insemination she has going on in her head, if the egg is fertilised and the foetus grows, it’s a baby; and after that baby is born it is a person and is therefore the equal of every other person out there, including it’s parents. She is a moron.

What’s this women got against horses* anyway?

    * Or White Rhinos, or Sumatran Tigers, or …. well any of the rare and endangered species (created by gawd remember) that humans have driven to near extinction that we are trying to keep alive, just like gawd want us to in the first place! Sheesh!

  10. cactusren says

dingojack: But rhinos and tigers aren’t god’s super special creation with souls (TM)! So a rhino is just a rhino, no matter how it’s conceived, but a human somehow gets its soul corrupted if it is not conceived in the approved manner.

I’m sure that Cheney is on the born again shit list for supporting same sex marriage.

  12. dugglebogey says

Right, we get it. Anybody who has an orgasm for any reason other than procreation should be locked away forever. Understood.

Who pays attention to people like that? Who actually treats them like their words make sense enough to put in print or repeated in any way?

    I don’t get it.

One of my sister in laws had a son by her deceased husband. He died of a brain tumor in his late 20′s but has banked sperm before his last round of chemo. They discussed having kids but they didn’t manage to get pregnant while he was alive (and had discussed using the frozen sperm). She loved him a lot and wanted the child. Should she be criminalized? I have a hard time not seeing the love in this case. I have serious doubts that NOM has bothered to look at the evidence that gay and lesbian couples also want children and to raise them together as an act of love.

  14. coragyps says

Selling sperm? When I was in junior high I must have given away $500,000 worth – and a free Kleenex with every order! Dammit! Born too soon!

  15. slc1 says

    Re baal @ #20

That’s also how Lance Armstrong had children by his first wife after his successful bout with testicular cancer.

  16. dean says

What if I’m giving it away?

I find that the barter system bridges the gap between giving away and selling, and offers other benefits as well.

  17. dingojack says

Yeah – ’cause you really want Al ‘Scarface’ Capone wannabes shipping in jars of cum from Canada, hidden in crappy furniture, to feed the black-market.
On the plus side, imagine all them nice new ‘Canuck and Newfie-Americans raising the US’s average IQ to above freezing.

  18. Sastra says

This woman is filtering the views of everyone else through her God prism. If all values derive from God and people create a child in an ungodly way — then they will not be able to value that child properly. They won’t think it is precious or loveable, because you can’t get love out of a bunch of chemicals doing a mechanical process. They bought the sperm like a commodity — therefore, the baby has become a commodity.

If you look closely at what first seems like word salad, this is just the old familiar Like Comes Only From Like fallacy of composition. It’s what’s behind the “if there is no God, then there is no meaning” or “atheists can’t love.”

My sympathies for your sister. In the immediate case, I hope this exposure to ACTUAL extremist intolerance will make you a little less painfully, aggressively naive.

So going online to buy sperm from a stranger is about as far as you can possibly get from the participation in divine love and divine creation.

But — as we established last year — getting sperm from a stranger who rapes you is a blessing from God.

These Christians aren’t just stupid — their brains seem to be deteriorating due to atrophy.

  21. Sastra says

Here’s an interesting question: from Morse’s point of view, would it be better for a lesbian to meet someone on Craig’s List for the purpose of having sex and getting herself pregnant, rather than just “going online to buy sperm from a stranger?” Would this scenario NOT be as far as you can possibly get from the participation in divine love and divine creation — but a bit better?

    And this:

The child is now a product, manufactured by adults, and therefore the child cannot be fully the equal of its parent. The object cannot be the equal of its producer or its maker, you know.

If there’s one group which is adamant about absolute parental authority and the subordination of the child to its natural superior, it’s the religious conservatives. The raising of children with this crowd is all about discipline, control, and lovingly breaking their little wills. Implying that WITH God parent and child are co-equals is bizarre.

And so the further we go down this path, the further away we are going from the true ideal of equality before God, of equality before one another, of treating one another with dignity.

The image I get here is of copies of copies of copies getting degraded, like tape recordings of tape recordings. Children are always going to be deteriorated versions of their parents, with grandchildren and great-grandchilden getting worse and worse, less and less human — UNLESS all the copies come directly off an ideal master copy like God. If that happens, then they’re less than the Parent Source, but all as good as each other. You’ve broken the inevitable downward cycle of natural degeneration.

The measure of a True Conservative: things are always better in the past.

  22. alanb says

Throughout history many or most children have been the products of arranged marriages. Sometimes the couple in an arranged marriage came to love one another, sometimes they became companionable and sometimes neither. However, somehow, nobody ever got their panties in a twist over the possibility that some of those unions were loveless.

  23. says

You’re all missing the most important point: a lesbian buying sperm on Craig’s List will raise that child without being subordinate to the Male Authority Figure ™. Gawd’s plan is not for women to purchase sperm from a man. It’s for the man to purchase the entire woman from her father.

  24. DaveL says

So, is a child conceived from rape also not equal to others, since it wasn’t produced by “a man and a woman… com(ing) together in an act of love”?

That would depend on how much the man loves to rape.

  25. says

This horrid woman is just stating Roman Catholic doctrine. What she ultimately intends to do is to make RC docrine, 1950′s style, the law of the United States. She’s against contraception, abortion, in vitro fertilization, sperm donors, and icky sex acts like oral and anal sex.
I wonder why she didn’t produce a whole litter of little Morse Robacks.

  26. baal says

“I hope this exposure to ACTUAL extremist intolerance will make you a little less painfully, aggressively naive.”

/wave Hi, Azkyroth. I feared that you’d stopped talking to me; it’s been more than a month. Thanks for the comment.

I haven’t been called naive in a long while. I assure you that my position on intentional infliction of emotional distress (not the legal theory by the same character string) as a tool by anyone is as consistent as I can humanly be across a range of circumstances and targets. I have yet to see a compelling argument for it’s use as a general tool and only found a handful of cases where I find it’s ok or the best option. I’ve been looking; the facts and context of given real situations rarely merit being an emotionally abusive jerk. Absent either, I’m going to keep suggesting that making someone rage or cry as your primary goal is not helpful (and is pretty much at odds with coming to a resolution, seeking the best out come for all parties or even getting to ‘truth’ or reality).

FWIW, I see my intentional advocacy against IIED (shaming is another example) as part of being against retributive justice. If you want to change my mind, you’ll have to try from that angle. Said differently, using wrongs to right wrongs is wrong.*

I may have also had opportunity to see many other examples of extremist intolerance including someone’s OT (calling her a rapist) RW in an Ashley Miller reasonable gun restrictions thread and pieces on so-called honor killings. I don’t find them equally bad (death is lots worse than a drive by talking point) but you’ll find me speaking out against both.

*I’m sure Rumsfeld could not have said this better.

I should say something on topic again lest I be rightly accused of derail. I wonder what’s NOMs take on bu – …
On second thought, I’ll skip it.

These people are sick in the head. Insane in the Membrain…

Buying sperm is commerce. If the sperm was sold for a profit, its capitalism. Either way it is basic American business values. Why do Jennifer Reback Morse and the National Organizatino for Marriage hate America? I bet they are Socialists who want men to just throw their sperm around willie-nilli everywhere for free.

  30. woodsong says

What billdaniels @33 said. I had a Roman Catholic friend tell me with a straight face that “Test tube babies have no souls” back in the late ’80s.

I find it amusing that she should pick on Craig’s List rather than sperm banks. If you look at the Craig’s List “Prohibited Items” list, it includes:

    – Blood, bodily fluids or body parts.
    – Household pets of any kind including dogs, cats, primates, cage birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Re-homing with small adoption fee OK. Pet animal parts, blood, or fluids are also not permitted, including stud/breeding service.

Someone should tell JRM that buying sperm through Craig’s List is already not legal! Even if the sperm isn’t of human origin.
