Gay Friends? That’s Like Cannibal Friends

Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner of Generations Radio are a bit upset at Rick Warren. Warren, you see, told an interviewer that he’s not homophobic because he has lots of gay friends (I bet he even lets them use his bathroom). And that has Swanson and Buehner spouting all kinds of obnoxious comparisons:

Swanson: Dave, you know, he says, ‘I have many, many gay friends.’ ‘Many, many gay friends.’

Buehner: Which is weird, because I have never said that.

Swanson: I have never said that either, I don’t say, ‘I have many, many gay friends.’ It’s almost like saying, ‘I have many, many gay fornicators;’ ‘I have many, many gay liar friends;’ it’s just craziness. I just interviewed this guy who goes into maximum security prisons and he interviews serial killers and I appreciate this guy, he’s actually had an opportunity to talk to a number of then and he says some twenty-five percent of them actually do repent he thinks, and it’s wonderful to see their lives turn around. So I mean, you know, what does this guy say: ‘I have many, many serial killer friends.’ I don’t think he says that, he doesn’t say that. I think he says, ‘it’s a shameful thing to be a serial killer.’ You wouldn’t want to wear that on a t-shirt, you wouldn’t want to say ‘I have many, many friends who kill people.’

Buehner: ‘I have many, many cannibal friends.’ ‘I have many, many molester friends.’ Just pick the abomination.

Swanson: You just don’t want to wear that on a shirt.

Buehner: ‘Many of my friends are wife beaters,’ would I say that?

Because gay people are just like cannibals and serial killers, amirite?

I have many friends who work on Saturday.
I have many friends who eat lobster.
I have many friends who think slavery is wrong, even though the bible nowhere condemns it.

Notice how quickly they turned away from their early references to fornication and lying. Homosexuality was in danger of sounding like a garden-variety sin. So they segue into bizarre references to serial killing and cannibalism.

Being gay isn’t a sin at all. But they know that it’s a slippery slope from viewing it as being like having sex outside of marriage to being like having an extra slice of pie during a diet. No, no — go the other way! Mass murder! Push it up the slide!

Yeah, that would be crazypants. Just like Jesus saying that he had many, many tax collector and prostitute friends.

But yes, that would be weird. Because talking to people, and being glad that they’ve turned their lives around, doesn’t actually mean that they’re you’re friends. But I guess that Swanson and Buehner have about as much comprehension of friendship as they do compassion, which appears to be zero.

I can’t imagine any gay person who would count Rick Warren as a friend (well, other than a few self-loathers who vote Republican.) I suspect what Warren means is, “There is a same-sex couple living down the street from me, and I haven’t been able to drive them off yet.”

It would be just like a Christian saying I’ve got lots of friends who are whores or those bastard tax collectors, or thieves or….
    Oh wait now!

    Oh, for fuck’s sake.
What’s amazing is that there was no “All the Nazis were gay” canard thrown in there. Unless that came later in the conversation.

    @ Gretchen your/you’re. It’s OK. It happens.

Of course not – you’d say they “provide Biblical headship for their helpmeets.”

Ok, I’ll pick one. I have many many Christian radio DJ bigot friends.

I can’t remember which nut it was. Some wingnut claimed to have gay friends, but he won’t let them near his children. Yeah, that’s not a friendship. Certainly not a sincere one, but what do fundies know about sincerity in such matters?

What shocks me about this is the underlying assumption: If a person or group is or does something “bad”, then it is unacceptable to describe or even think of them as friends. We cannot speak of them in any positive or neutral sense, they must be characterized negatively in any reference.

I used to wonder how fundagelicals could see demons everywhere, until I realized how good they were at making them.

    Bullshit.

    1) if he had gay friends, he would see that they’re normal people and drop the whole “teh gayz iz evil” schtick.

    2) if he had gay friends and didn’t drop the schtick, they wouldn’t be his friends.

So, he doesn’t have gay friends.

And, people like Kevin and Dave make me want to vomit. What is Generations Radio?

Fundie xianity is a negative religion. It’s all hate this, hate that, hate everything.

The closest they get to a positive value is hoping jesus the sky monster shows up Real Soon and kills them and 7 billion other people.

  13. says

Well, at least I don’t have lots of gay, cannibalistic, serial killing, SO/spouse abusing friends; not that I would feel as bad about having them as friends as I would at having fundamentallyfuckedinthehead religiobots for friends.

I have many, many friends who don’t decide who to be friends with based on how it would look on a t-shirt. Because even if your friends are Nobel prize-winning philanthropists, you don’t put that shit on a shirt.
