Islamic Militia to Murder 12 Gay Men in Libya

This is a very disturbing but hardly surprising story. In Libya, one of the many reactionary Islamic militias has kidnapped a bunch of men they say are gay and plan to mutilate and kill them in the name of Allah. Because being gay is way more immoral than mutilation and murder.

Twelve men face mutilation and execution for allegedly being gay after being captured by an extremist Libyan Islamist militia.

The twelve men were, apparently, having a private party in Ain Zara, a suburb of Tripoli, the country’s capital, when the militia captured them, late on Thursday night (22 November).

The group boasted by posting the pictures of the men on Facebook, describing them as the ‘third sex’ (a term used in the Arab Gulf area to denote ‘queers’) including one of the men who had a henna ‘tattoo’ on his back.

One of the pictures was accompanied by the Quranic call ‘there is no power but the power of Allah!’…

The militia Facebook page entitled as the ‘special deterrence unit’ boasted that the men were captured doing the ‘practices of the people of Lot’ (ie gay sex) and that they are to be mutilated and executed.

The militia also claim they have now become a legal part of the Libyan Ministry of Interior.

There are hundreds of militias now in Libya, filling the power vacuum left by Qaddafi’s fall.

    How did I miss this?
Good to see that Islamic religious zealots are as ignorant of the text* they use to justify their barbarity as christian zealots are, of course the Muslims might have some mitigating circumstances…

And the Bible paints him as a godly man?

Not a godly man, but a righteous man.

Don’t forget that this is also a book that insists, time and again, that there are no righteous men.

I assume “people of Lot” means the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, who (according to the story) demanded to have sex with the two male angels Lot was hosting in his home.

Which is less to the point, of course, than the matter of why anybody in the world fucking cares what kind of sex other people have, and with whom, provided they’re consenting adults, especially to the point of mutilating and slaughtering them!

Not yelling at you, fifthdentist. Merely bemoaning the state of humanity and questioning my own part in it.

So all the decent and sensible citizens will be out on the streets protesting against the abductors and demanding that the authorities make an effort to rescue the victims? No, I didn’t think so.

If Allah, like Yahweh, is too lazy to do his own smiting then he’s too lazy to be worth worshipping.

Yet another example of why friends don’t let friends set up theocracies (or religiously inspired government).

FWIW the 3rd sex language isn’t exactly uncommon in history or even currently in places that aren’t dominated by the western gender binary. Generally, the 3rd sex is born male sex (or intersexed) but is then adopts a particular social display that may cover gay, cross dressing, trans and sometimes, eunuchs. Hijras in India would be the primary example. I haven’t ever seen an equivalent social roles for born physically female but genderqueer (make of that what you will).

Islamic religion is a “hypocritical bias religion”… These culture are in-humane with the women and children, specially females; as a result of controlling their “patriarchy male control society”;separation of genders promotes homosexuality; the reason why they have sex with their women is to “procreate” only; the sexual satisfaction is in their own male gene…I have traveled in the Middle East and have witness the distortion of their society…

“Islamic Militia to Murder 12 Gay Men in Libya.”

Yeah, I’m dragging this off into a comment about capital punishment in general, but…. Is it murder only if the sentence is the result of a law one doesn’t agree with?

grumpyoldfart – did you miss the Syria bit?
I think the citizens might have other things on their minds (like not getting killed by ‘the authorities’) and the authorities aren’t really interested in saving anyone when there’s an opportunity for the greater killing spree.

@9 Even if we assume that Lybian law actually calls for the execution of these men it is not clear from the evidence provided that this militia has legal authority to carry out those executions. Killing without legal authority is surely a definition of murder that even the most enthusiastic advocate of killing by the state could accept.

Alas, ye of little understanding. In the self-important world of religious fanatics, the militia is acting as god’s hand. Just as the writers of holy writ are the instrument that is directly carrying out god’s intentions.

Give the Scott Livelys another 20 years or so and they’ll happily make common cause with these kind of Muslims.

Gretchen is correct. The Qur’an says that Lut (Lot) was sent to his people (the people of Sodom and Gomorrah) to turn them away from their sexual perversions. Most Muslims interpret this to mean that Lot’s people were homosexuals and God destroyed them for it. The word lutiyya (“of Lot”) is a common and derogatory term for homosexuality in Arabic-speakig countries, similar to English “sodomy.” The phrase “practices of the people of Lot” above might be better translated as “practices of Sodomites.”

Also I should mention that some progressive Muslims interpret the story of Lot in a non-homophobic way, like my friend Nahida: The People of Sodom

    Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc was an individual. baal is talking about defined social roles which any genderqueer woman within a given society could identify.

(Anyway I don’t think we can know for sure if Joan of Arc was genderqueer or not.)

Their Facebook page seems to have disappeared so hopefully it was taken down. I’m pleased but also surprised that Facebook finds images of terrorist hostages more offensive than women’s breasts.
