Michigan GOP Wants Tax Breaks for Fetuses

The wingnuts who run the Michigan legislature, where Republicans control both chambers by large margins (and the governor’s mansion too), have come up with an innovative new strategy to combine their two obsessions: embryos and tax cuts.

Michigan lawmakers may consider allowing a fetus of at least 12 weeks to qualify as a dependent for state income tax purposes — a move that if put into law might be the first of its kind in the nation.

House Bills 5684 and 5685 were given a hearing in the House Tax Policy Committee on Tuesday. And critics quickly question its motives, saying it appeared to be a back door way to try and crack down on abortions…

One of the legislation’s main sponsors — Rep. Jud Gilbert, R-Algonac — said it appears Michigan would be the first state to implement such a policy.

“You’re recognizing the fact that people have additional expenses, another person to take care of,” Gilbert said of the rationale behind allowing fetuses to be claimed as income tax exemptions. “Money saved there could be contributed to doctor’s bills and all kinds of things.”

This from the same Republican-controlled legislature that has cut the Earned Income Tax Credit for poor families with real children — you know, post-fetal humans, the kind they don’t give a shit about — along with Medicaid and many other things that would “recognize that people have additional expenses.” Fetuses are great, but fuck you once you’re born.

Well after you’re born you should be able to go out and earn a living and not have to suck off the teat forever unless you decide to be one of those welfare babies who live off the state.

How are they going to document it?

Will your doctor have to file paperwork or write a receipt out for you?

What happens if you miscarry? Spontaneous abortions run around 30-50%. Do you then lose your fetal tax credit?

This is Tea Party small government in action. Running around making sure people who claim they are pregnant are actually pregnant.

It’s (kinda) in the bill, if you’re able to dig through it. Like most bills, this one is striking and amending existing laws rather than creating new ones, so it’s a bit of an ass to read, but here’s the key part:

DEPENDENT INCLUDES A FETUS THAT HAS, AS DETERMINED BY A PHYSICIAN, COMPLETED AT LEAST 12 WEEKS OF GESTATION AS OF THE LAST DAY OF THE TAX YEAR, AND THAT HAS BEEN UNDER THE CARE AND OBSERVATION OF A PHYSICIAN SINCE AT LEAST 12 WEEKS OF GESTATION.

    @#3.

What happens if you have twins?

Do you get to claim two tax credits?

There are a lot of odd things about this bill. They could have made it a tax credit for pregnant women. Instead they made it a tax credit for fetuses.

Because fetuses are more important than pregnant women.

I know how much those guyz like savin’ the Benjaminz for important shit like givin’ the Walton family another tax break for building a superstore and driving local merchants out of business. So, I gotta innovate their innovation.

I’m 63 and my little wiggle guys are prolly as arthritic, overweight, myopic and not delieberately bald as I am–but, hey, I can still make teh babeez (technically, anyway). I could throw a wrench into their planz by gettin’ all up in MI fecundfemale populace and makin’ their tax collections go NEGATIVE. So, guyz, send me a check for, say, $ 562.91/month and I’ll “keep a lid on things”, so to speak. Capeesh?

“Because fetuses are more important than pregnant women.”.

For those asshats, a brood mare, sow or cow is more important than a pregnant woman.

  7. says

    Oh, good!

The Michigan legislature will be supporting all those single mothers who otherwise wouldn’t get a deduction until their “illegitimate” children get born and go on welfare. How liberal of them.

Not really. They have that one covered.

It is a tax deduction on state income taxes. You have to pay taxes before you need the deduction.

If you are poor and pregnant, it isn’t going to do you any good if you don’t pay taxes.

They’ve got their priorities set out. Fetuses of well off people, themselves, their livestock, children, pregnant women.

It’ll be interesting to see how this Republican gov., an outlier amongst all Republicans given his sanity, honesty, and relative reasonability, responds. To date he’s predominately been very good at checking the insanity coming out of Republican-controlled legislature. He’s even got them to raise taxes on some pension income.

But he also campaigned hard in 2000 in SW Michigan as a so-called pro-lifer, which is the home of the Calvinists. And IIRC, he also got one at least one anti-abortion rights bill killed in the legislature. Those Calvinists finance a significant portion of the conservative movement’s national agenda, we’re talking big, big bucks. If this governor has presidential aspirations; he’s going to need their money to get introduced at the national level.

  10. Michael Heath says

Re above post, Rick Snyder campaigned in SW Michigan in 2010, not 2000; sorry for the typo.

So it only has to have made 12 weeks by Dec. 31, and it counts as a dependent for the whole year? Sounds like an easy deduction! Just fuck as much as possible in August, so you get pregnant by September, get everything documented by the end of December, and then have an abortion the first week in January. Pocket your tax benefits without dealing with the worst part of pregnancy and start over again in 8 months!

  12. says

    George Carlin was right. If you’re pre-born, you’re fine. If you’re pre-school, you’re fucked.

He also said something about how they (anti-abortion folks) don’t give a shit until those babies reach military age.

I am inclined to agree with his statements on the matter, and I could not put it much better myself.

  13. says

“Fetuses are great, but fuck you once you’re born.”

We all know they pretty much think this, but it’s rare for them to make it quite so blatant.

  14. says

You’re recognizing the fact that people have additional expenses, another person to take care of,” Gilbert said.

Merging two Tea People fetishes: embryos and tax cuts. Now if they could just include a provision for free tricorne baby bonnets…

  15. says

It’s like they heard George Carlin’s abortion routine back in 96 and completely missed the irony. “They’ll do anything for the unborn, but once you’re born, you’re on your own.”

  16. says

So if you get tax credits for a fetus, and they reduced the breaks you get for a actual child, won’t that encourage more abortions by their logic? The way to maximally game the system would be to have repeated pregnancies all terminated at the last possible second.

  17. bradleybetts says

You know this is just a poorly disguised effort to defend their position that foetuses are people by laying the groundwork for future circular arguments.

“Abortion should be illegal because foetuses are people!”

“How is a foetus a person!?”

“Well the State classifies them as a dependant!”

“Yeah, because you made them dependants…”

    “Yeah, because they are people!”

    And round we go…
