Charges have finally been dropped against Rimsha, a 14 year old Christian girl with a mental disability who was arrested for blasphemy after falsely being accused of burning pages of the Quran by an imam who tried to frame her. The BBC reports:
A court in Pakistan has dropped a controversial blasphemy case against a Christian girl accused by her neighbour of burning pages from the Koran.
The 14-year-old girl, known as Rimsha, was held in a maximum security jail in August, prompting global concern.
Her arrest followed accusations by a Muslim cleric who is now facing allegations that he planted evidence.
Rimsha’s lawyer said the case had been a misuse of law. Her family received death threats and went into hiding.
There are fears that even though the case has been dropped, Rimsha and her family will not be safe in Pakistan.
Of course they won’t. And this hasn’t been a misuse of the law — the law itself is barbaric. It isn’t being used wrongly or unjustly, it is inherently wrong and unjust.

Frothing mobs itching to burn someone to prove their righteousness are known for their respect of court verdicts.

I hope that was for her own protection.

This is good news on the face of it, but I sort of dread reading another story about this case since it’s hard to imagine this ending well.
Then there’s the non-story, about the cleric “facing allegations”. I doubt we’ll read about him again, since I seriously doubt he will ever be really called to account for his shameful actions, and he will continue his dishonest career preaching to others.

I read this a couple of days ago here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-20/an-pakistan-drops-blasphemy-case-against-girl/4382954
The most chilling line in that story is “The prosecution said it would appeal the decision”.

So where are the mobs demanding that the imam be executed for blasphemy, since he turned out to be the one who burned the pages?
