Swanson’s Bizarre Views on Government and Morality

Pastor Kevin Swanson of Generations Radio typically delivers incoherent screeds about nearly every political issue, but this one is especially weird. Listen as he explains how getting the government out of our private lives somehow leads to big government:

Democrats in general—in general—are for anything that’s immoral and anything that involves more government. As it turns out occasionally you have to strip back a little more government control in order for people to become more immoral. You follow me there? I mean if you’re a Democrat, you’re going to have to strip back a little control of things like marijuana and homosexuality in order to maximize the immorality of the people. But in the process, what do you do with the size of government, Dave you’re a good Democrat. In the process what are you doing with the size of government? You’re growing and growing and growing and growing it. So the idea, friends, is to make sure everybody is committing homosexual acts and they’re high on drugs, and then they vote for Democrats to increase the size of government and provide pretend security for the people high on drugs. That’s the Democratic vision in a nutshell…somebody write that down I think that’s worth putting on a poster somewhere. That’s what Democrats do and they do it well.

Okay, let me get this straight. Reducing the ability of government to put millions of Americans into the criminal justice system at the cost of billions and billions of dollars every year by decriminalizing marijuana is all part of a plot to grow the size of government. And preventing Christians from using the power of the government to throw gay people in jail is all part of a big government agenda. Sure, that makes sense.

Of course both the number of government employees and government spending are lower under Obama than under Bush. And generally lower and Democrats than Republicans.

And yet, it escapes these loons that the great Republican demi-god, Ronald Reagan tripled the national debt in spite of raising taxes eleven times. Oh well……facts are, almost always, a waste of time when dealing with religious fanatics.

    Well, that’s clear …

Government is supposed to prevent immorality … unless it is economic immorality, like fraudulently selling worthless mortgage-backed securities or peddling contaminated/ineffective drugs or manipulating markets, etc., etc. The latter is “excessive regulation.”

So, vote Republican to make sure the government is big enough to snoop into everyone’s bedroom but not big enough to prevent the very rich from ripping everone else off.

    So lets break it down.

    1. Admit that some liberal policies would reduce government

    2. Insist that liberal by definition means wanting to supersize government

    3. Conclusion reducing government must make it grow by magic.

    Is that the argument?

Yes, because his view is pro-small government – government small enough to fit into the home, or better yet, your naughty bits.
Also drugs make you vote for the Demoncrats or something.

I don’t see anything particularly strange in all of this. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that Romney and Ryan were preaching that government should reduce taxes, increase military spending, and eliminate the deficit (while sedulously avoiding the phrase `health care vouchers’? What part of `spending more while spending less’ do people not get?

For more details on this strategy, see this excellent Wikipedia article.

Patrick@4: “facts are, almost always, a waste of time when dealing with religious fanatics.”

As the Westboro Baptist Church have always proclaimed, but never quite managed to spell corectly, God hates facts.

Yes, put that on a poster. You’re so right.

The Democratic Vision is to make sure everybody is committing homosexual acts and they’re high on drugs, and then they vote for Democrats to increase the size of government and provide pretend security for the people high on drugs.

Put that on buses and put it up in subway stations and plaster it on telephone poles and encourage people to put it on the lawn in front of their homes. It will really make the Democrats look mean and stupid and win the swing vote in the next election. Phrase it just the way you did now. Really. It’s perfect.

Am I reading this right? His tirade makes even less sense than the bible. No wonder he doesn’t back it up with a verse.

Wait THAT’S what you get when you vote Democrat? Oh man your American two party system doesn’t sound so bad now. We don’t get cool platforms like that up in Canada. Well… the Rhino party but we’re all pretty sure they’re just kidding.

Also, apparently pulling young men off their academic and career paths and locking them up, preventing them from supporting their children and participating in their lives, followed by a permanent brand that seriously impairs their future earning ability, is totally moral. Especially when it’s justified by the fact they were once in possession of an ounce or two of a naturally occurring plant.

Well, you gotta admit, all those people doing nothing but staying home having pot-fueled buttsecks are going to need welfare checks and food stamps. I can just see guys in leather lined up with grocery buggies full of Cheetos, KY Jelly and water bongs.
