DesJarlais: Even Worse Than Previously Thought

Man, the story of Scott DesJarlais, the “pro-family” and “pro-life” Republican congressman from Tennessee who won reelection two weeks ago despite revelations that he had affairs on his wife with at least two of his patients and tried to convince one to have an abortion, just keeps getting worse. Legal documents from his divorce show that he also paid for his wife’s abortion and was committing all kinds of legal and ethical violations as a doctor.

The anti-abortion, pro-family Tennessee congressman who pushed his patient and mistress to get an abortion also agreed that his wife should have two, according to court transcripts released Thursday.

Those documents, from GOP Rep. Scott DesJarlais’ 2000 divorce proceedings, paint a lurid picture of a doctor who had multiple affairs with coworkers and patients — at least one of whom he prescribed pain pills for — while he was chief of staff at a local hospital…

It turns out it was all true, as well as reports that he denied during his 2010 campaign that he stuck a gun in his mouth for more than two hours, and threatened suicide after it became apparent he could not repair his marriage with his then-wife, Susan.

Although DesJarlais called the 2010 reports “all false”, he testified under oath they were true.

“It’s very embarrassing to talk about. I know better than this,” DesJarlais said at the time. His wife also accused him of dry-firing the gun outside her bedroom, although DesJarlais testified he had only been spinning the empty chamber of a revolver.

“I deal with people in the hospital that do this,” DesJarlais said. “Suicide threats is [sic] probably the most immature form of attention-seeking behavior that there is and I resorted to that on this evening and I regret it, I regret that she felt threatened by it, and I’m very ashamed of it.”

Oh, and many more affairs too:

It’s not clear what the fallout from sex with workers at the hospital would be, but DesJarlais admits to that as well. In one case, he hooked up with a technician at the hospital Christmas party in 1999, then took her home with him. Among other details, Desjarlais kept photos of himself with one of his patient-sex partners, which his wife later found during their reconciliation.

His medical license should be yanked, permanently.

I thought sleeping with your patients was an automatic no-more-license? If it isn’t, it should be!

DesJarlais has his well known problems.

He didn’t even campaign in his district and still won.

So what are the problems of his fundie Tennessee xian base that voted for him?

Fundies don’t walk their talk. They say they care about family values but that is a lie. They are all hypocrites as well.

Fundie xianity has really turned into right wing extremist politics with a few crosses stuck on it for show.

Democrats are evil, vicious monsters out to destroy God and Country. Republicans are imperfect humans who should be understood and forgiven because God loves them.

    Duh.

He did all this shit, but they know how he votes. That’s all that counts for the Republican base.

They’ve been working on that language for a years, but it’s been a bear translating “It’s OK for good Christians like me who just got into a bad spot, but not all those wanton sluts” into something legally coherent.

Well, yeah, but that’s no big deal since he doesn’t need it in his new career. All that stuff he lied about to voters? Just part of the game — they can’t fire him for lying to them on his “application.”

Desjarlais could reduce the abortion rate in his state simply by keeping his pants on.

It seems to me that if he were a competent doctor, he could would have ensured that his sex partners had appropriate, effective contraception. Unless he was in it only for his own pleasure (as seems likely) and didn’t care about the consequences to his partners – only the politicial consequences for himself.

One can only hope that the revocation of his medical license is in process. He should be ashamed.

Perhaps Dr. Desjarlais would have benefitted from the “Legitmate Rape” proviso. Noneathem slutz woulda got preggerz if they was REALLY raped. Whoops, my bad, forget what I just said.

I like how he doesn’t even pretend that he had any intention of harming himself:

“I deal with people in the hospital that do this,” DesJarlais said. “Suicide threats is [sic] probably the most immature form of attention-seeking behavior that there is and I resorted to that on this evening and I regret it, I regret that she felt threatened by it, and I’m very ashamed of it.”

He regrets that his attempt to emotionally blackmail his wife failed. How sweet! She should totally take him back now!

“..he hooked up with a technician at the hospital Christmas party in 1999″

I fail to see what’s wrong with that. I seriously envy people who can make Christmas parties about fun sexy times. Plus aren’t coworkers allowed to schmozzle in the US?

The rest is just more of the same disgusting, though. Family values my foot.

That was just there to point out that, in addition to the affairs with patients, he also cheated on his wife with still other people.
