Jeffress: Obama Paves Way for Antichrist

The breakout star of the loony Christian right during the 2012 election, in my view, is Robert Jeffress of the Southern Baptist Convention. First he declared that a vote for Romney would bring God’s punishment on us all. Then after Romney won, he said that a vote against Romney would bring down the wrath of God. Now he says that Obama is paving the way for the Antichrist:

Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, made remarks on Sunday before the election that should Obama win, his victory would lead to the reign of the Antichrist.

“I want you to hear me tonight, I am not saying that President Obama is the Antichrist, I am not saying that at all. One reason I know he’s not the Antichrist is the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers when he comes,” said Jeffress.

“President Obama is not the Antichrist. But what I am saying is this: the course he is choosing to lead our nation is paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist.”

Jeffress would go on to say that “it is time for Christians to stand up and to push back against this evil that is overtaking our nation” and to do so via “the ballot box.”

Um. Why? If you’re a Christian, shouldn’t you be happy about this? You preach that the Antichrist must come to pave the way for the end times and the second coming of Christ. You preach that this is God’s will and is all prophecied to happen. So if you actively fight against that, aren’t you trying to thwart the will of God and prevent the second coming of your savior?

Talibangelicals talk earnestly and with great fervor about how wonderful things will be after the Second Coming, but only because they are supposed to talk earnestly and with great fervor about these things. The reality is, however, that they will do everything they can to avoid The End. They do not want to give up the material comforts of life, and they do not want to give up their self-righteous presumed “authority” to condemn, berate and belittle those they consider to be inferior.

A True Believing friend of mine (she’s actually one of the good ones) likes to point out that their attitudes prove that they will NOT be among the Chosen in Heaven, and they know it: that is why they do everything they can to hide.

Wait! I thought Obama was the antichrist. Or was he the lamb beast or the leopard beast? Or the ten headed dragon? Or was he a cleverly disguised whore of Babylon? That’s what I don’t like about the bible, the characters are so damn hard to keep straight.

@fifthdentist #1 – Modern Talibangelical eschatology holds that the Anti-Christ would rise to global prominence as a very charismatic, extremely popular figure who will offered a position that makes him effectively a sole dictator of the world in exchange for his solutions to all the ills of modern life. No mere president has that kind of power, and while Obama won handily, it was not the kind of landslide that would tag him as “very charismatic and extremely popular.”

Wait! I thought Obama was the antichrist.

According to many Protestants, the antichrist is supposed to be the Pope. It says that right on the website of Michele Bachmann’s church.

I guess the antichrist timeshares these days between the Pope, Obama, and Rachel Maddow.

This is another example of religious evolution. Religions evolve and quite rapidly. The antichrist gets moved around like a chess piece. Mormons are Fake Xians except when one runs for president.

I assume they must have cell phone apps to keep track of what their sacred eternal core beliefs are this week.

Good–paving or any other kind of infrastructure improvement project is just what this country needs.

It amazes me these people don’t get whiplash.

Raven: That was Bachmann’s former church. the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Michele realized that that belief might turn off Catholic voters, so she switched to an even crazier fundie megachurch.

If Obama were to exhibit supernatural power consistent with being the anti-christ (or even paving a road that was anti-christ worthy), I’ll reconsider my atheism. It’s not James Randi’s million dollars but surely it counts for something.

@1 – to be fair, Obama was probably called the antichrist before he was elected. His demotion is probably linked more to his realizing the presidency than the color of his skin. Prophets know that their prophesies are best kept nebulous and in the future, not concrete and in the here-and-now. Otherwise they just look silly. Well, sillier. Smart prophets know that you always gotta pin the antichrist on the undefined and unknown next guy (or gal) if you want the flock to stay with you.

You really have to admire the self-restraint of the Anti-Christ. Two thousand years of jerking humanity off & he still hasn’t come.

Damn, I was going to award today’s sniny internets award(TM) to fifthdentist@1, but busterggi@15 just snatched it away.

I absolutely love that quote for the way Jeffress starts off saying what he thinks sounds reasonable (at least on planet wingnuttier) and then goes full mentalist straight after.

“Hey, I’m a reasonable guy, I’m not one of those whackos who thinks Obama’s the antichrist or anything really nuts like that. Well, not today anyway….but I’ll tell you what…wstfgl. Buggrit! Millenium hand and shrimp! I told ‘em, I sez I told ‘em. Buggrit!”

    That was *so* last week.
It can be hard to keep up with all the Obama conspiracy theories. They change as often as Mittens changes his mind.

    Or websites.
    ‘dowehateblackpeoplethisweek.com’
(and it’s sad that I actually checked to see if that was a site; as of right now, it’s not)

eric: yes, Obama was labelled the Antichrist back in mid-2008, if not earlier. I used to troll one particular loony blog, until they purged all comments and pretended a technical problem ate their homework.

  17. says

Obama can’t be the Antichrist. It’s King Juan Carlos of Spain. That’s what I heard Jack Van IMpe say years ago.

Personally I’m more interested in who the Unclechrist will be.

  18. sawells says

I love the bit about “the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers when he comes”. Because I clearly remember the bit in Revelations which says what the antichrist’s approval rating will be… oh, hang on.

  19. slc1 says

Obama isn’t the anti-Christ, he’s the foul fiend himself in vaguely human form (with kudos to the late Stewart Alsop). End snark.
