Harvey: Homosexuality = Cannibalism

Linda Harvey, the absolutely maniacal leader of Mission America, had “ex-gay” therapist Floyd Godfrey on her radio show and the two of them actually claimed that homosexuality is just like cannibalism. See if you can make any sense out of this bizarre reasoning:

Harvey: What I’ve heard of is that part of that though is that you think that you could become what that person is by being close to them, which I don’t think the male-female you never—is that accurate in any way? Almost like a cannibalism kind of a feeling.

Godfrey: That’s true. Dr. Elizabeth Moberly had talked about homosexuality like cannibalism because we’re so hungry. And that is what it feels like to those who struggle with homosexual feelings, they’re so hungry they just want to eat it up, they want to assimilate, they want to eat what they don’t feel like they have. If you look at cannibals they would eat the leaders of the tribe, they would eat those that have the qualities they so admired. A young man with homosexual attractions is so envious, he’s jealous of other boys, he puts them on a pedestal, he might idolize them, he’s jealous of them, so he’s trying to assimilate what he feels like he doesn’t have. So that’s where that metaphor comes from.

Okey dokey.

“is that accurate in any way?”

Nope. There, problem solved. Seriously though, wtf are they talking about? I can’t even parse it, it’s complete nonsense.

they want to eat what they don’t feel like they have

Their metaphor would seem to apply just as well, if not better, to heterosexuality. After all, what I don’t have as a man is femaleness. I already have maleness. So (to apply their idiocy), me having sex with women is like me wanting to eat whan I don’t have.

Is he suggesting all heterosexuals are repressed transsexuals?

Given Christians perform a cannibalistic ritual of eating their own god when he had human flesh; this exchange qualifies as one of countless examples of psychological projection by conservative Christians.

Oh, I love leaping to the worst possible interpretation so I can swear at strangers over the internet!

I’ll give it a shot: And non-American lives don’t matter?!? Go suck yourself off!

Did I do it right, or should I be using a pseudonym?

Eating the flesh of a revered individual in order to get close to said individual, where did I heard this before?, Oh right that’s where.
“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”; Matthew 26:26.

  7. Abby Normal says

Michael, that was my second thought. My first was, Well sure, but straight guys like blowjobs too.

Actually in addition to the very ordinary purpose of nourishment, cannibalism is usually practiced in order to preserve and do honor to the dead– not to take them over or to “eat what you don’t feel like you have.”

Still, it’s nice to see that psychoanalyizing others in order to discredit them has not fallen out of fashion amongst people who don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. Even if cannibals did consume human flesh for the purpose of incorporating qualities they admire (something that is very much in line with sympathetic magic), that has what to do with homosexuality? Precisely nothing. But hey, Freud didn’t do enough damage to our understanding of healthy sexuality– by all means, continue insisting that a cigar is not always a cigar and a penis is actually a hot dog.

Seriously, this is just bizarre. I thought I was relatively jaded against fundy logic whackamole, but this threw me a decent curve ball.

How popular are these two people? I find it really hard to believe they’re not the fringe of the fringe. I know nobody who believes stuff like this and isn’t treated like a brain damaged simpleton by others, so I have to wonder how much cultural clout they actually wield. Are we skewing our perception of reality regarding this issue by paying greater attention to these (admitedly amusing) extreme cases? Is the steady influx of whackjob logic that blogs like this feed us giving us an unrealistic view of what the other side actually believes?

  10. leftwingfox says

Look lady, just accept that you like something strange, and enjoy your vore porn in peace. Stop assuming your desire to eat pretty people is a common human urge barely restrained by Christianity, and projecting that onto others!

  11. Alverant says

I can follow his twisted logic. If he believes that sperm is a person then oral sex is canibalism.

  12. Ben P says

Seriously though, wtf are they talking about? I can’t even parse it, it’s complete nonsense.

    Here’s my crack at guessing.

I think it comes out of the bizarre shit that quote unquote “ex-gays” make up to rationalize why they felt the way they did. Because it’s purely internal rationalization, it doesn’t make any logical sense.

As an “ex-gay” Godfrey was clearly at some point (and probably still is) sexually attracted to men. However, his mind or his religious belief or whatever tells him that “this is evil, so it can’t be natural and it has to be repressed.”

So what he’s come up with in his own mind appears to be “i’m not gay, I was just so jealous of those mean that I idolized them and put them on a pedestal, and I wanted to be what they were so badly that I wanted to fuck them.”

Then he takes some beliefs about cannabalism from primitive cultures e.g. “you consume the essence” of the dead when you eat them and will assume some of their characteristics and says that it’s kind of the same thing.

  13. dingojack says

Uh Gretchen – I believe Freud famously remarked that: ‘Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar’ when talking about dream symbolism. You got it ass-backward.

I have always thought that fava beans and a nice chianti improves the gay sex immensely.

  15. Abby Normal says

Ragarth, you make a good point. But the flipside may also be true. You say:

I know nobody who believes stuff like this and isn’t treated like a brain damaged simpleton by others…

The people you know may be slanting your view in the other direction. But, like you, I prefer to think that the majority of anti-gay people are more casual about it.

    Gretchen @ 14
So Clinton was just improving the flavor?
    (teasing, not disagreeing)

  16. John Hinkle says

Godfrey: That’s true. Dr. Elizabeth Moberly had talked about homosexuality like cannibalism because we’re so hungry.

From the little I could find, this Moberly character is a British theologian who had delusions of psychological abilities back in the eighties. Apparently fundy xians still like to reference Doctor Moberly because they think she’s all sciency and shit, yo.

Oh, and she thought gay people could be “repaired.”

  17. says

    “Homosexuality is Benghazi.”

PLUS HITLER, DAMN IT, PLUS HITLER!!

“How popular are these two people? I find it really hard to believe they’re not the fringe of the fringe. I know nobody who believes stuff like this and isn’t treated like a brain damaged simpleton by others, so I have to wonder how much cultural clout they actually wield.”.

Or so they tell you. Nobody knows what really goes on in somebody else’s head but if we look at their actions as being informed by their thoughts, million of USAians are prejucied against other people with justifications no less bizarre than what these two assholes use.

  18. Quodlibet says

    Alverant @ #17:

If he believes that sperm is a person then oral sex is canibalism.

    Ooh, personhood for spermatozoa!

OK, no sex for males unless it is unprotected procreating sex.

    Nope, put it away.

  19. Quodlibet says

    homosexuality is just like cannibalism

OK, that must be why my dear gay friend Timothy gives me those big wet smoochy kisses. He’s a cannibal. Uh huh.

  20. r2dbag says

Someone needs a cultural anthropology lesson… I’m not an expert in any sense, but even reading a few books would be helpful in this case.

  21. kermit. says

Gretchen, dingo was right but so were you. Freud said “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” exactly because he had put the idea in people’s heads that it usually isn’t.

  22. lofgren says

As a metaphor, it’s bent but not totally broken. We use lust as a metaphor in art for a desire to possess the qualities of others all the time, and it’s hardly a stretch to suppose that taking the qualities of others is part of the subliminal attraction of cannibalism even if it’s not explicit. For aberrant, rather than cultural, cannibals such as Jeffrey Dahmer, the desire to possess was more literal but could easily be interpreted in the way they describe based on the idea that a person can’t ever know or understand their own true motivations.

Hetero example: The Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype is often criticized by feminists because it treats the female character in the film as an extension of the male protagonist, with no function, desires, or arc of her own. This is because the archetype does not represent a “real” woman, but rather a collection of attributes that the main character wishes he possessed: spontaneity, non-conformism, confidence, creativity, and extrovertedness(?). The romance between the two characters is only a metaphor for the male’s longing to acquire these traits, not an attempt to depict an actual relationship between two individuals, which is why one half of the relationship is little more than a two-dimensional mirror image of the other. That this dynamic plays itself out in (likely doomed) relationships in the real world, I have no doubt, although I suspect it is more typical that young men raised on such films fantasize about a manic pixie dream girl coming into their lives to fix them, and then become bitter MRAs when she turns out to be an actual human being with interests beyond enlivening his sad sack life.

This is not to say that the male protagonist secretly desires to eat the MPDG, nor even that the cannibal wants to have sex with his victim. Only that the two desires can ably serve as metaphors for the same natural urge to possess the traits that we are attracted to.

What’s that? That’s not what they meant by metaphor? Oh, well fuck’em then.

  23. abb3w says

It’s conceivable they’re confusing homosexuality with “vore”, which is one of the weirder fantasy fetishes out there in the furry community… which is overall pretty tolerant of non-heterosexuals, but not exclusively. Don’t go Googling after it unless you’re utterly immune to squick.

More likely, though, they’re not that coherent in their delusions.

  24. dingojack says

Joachim Kroll was a German serial killer in the 1950-70’s who often took part of the buttock of thigh of his victims, not because he wanted to ‘be them’ but simply because fresh meat was in short supply.
Amateur RW psychoanalysis – 0; reality – several bazillion.

  25. dingojack says

Gretchen – You were right the first time. *Sigh* quick reading comprehension failure!
Kermit – I think (and please note I ain’t no psyc expert) that Freud was not saying that dreaming of a cigar usually was dreaming of penises, rather that dreaming of a cigar wasn’t significant in itself, it was dreaming frequently of cigars that could be significant. But that’s just my reading (and see above for my general level of accuracy on that front).
