Peter Sprigg’s Tortured Logic

If you want to see some truly bizarre “reasoning,” look at this post by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council. Marriage equality was 4 for 4 on election day earlier this month, but Sprigg somehow manages to pretend that this proves that marriage equality is still wildly unpopular. Take a look at these mental gymnastics:

Gohmert: Obama Advised by Muslim Brotherhood

In the latest edition of the Real Douchebags of the Republican Congressional Caucus, Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas, who may very well be the single dumbest person in the entire House (yeah, I know, there’s a lot of competition for that title) told unhinged Islamophobe Frank Gaffney that Obama is being advised by the Muslim Brotherhood:

SPLC Files Fraud Suit Over Reversion Therapy

This is going to be a very interesting lawsuit to watch. The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a consumer fraud lawsuit, apparently the first of its kind, against a New Jersey clinic that claims to be able to turn gay people straight through “reversion therapy.” Calling such therapy “a dangerous and discredited practice that claims to convert people from gay to straight,” the SPLC says:

Another Mythical Threat to American Sovereignty

For all the constant freakouts from the right about everything the United Nations does being a threat to American sovereignty, it’s really a wonder that we still exist as a nation at all. We should have lost our sovereignty decades ago, and multiple times. Rick Santorum and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah are the latest to beat the “ZOMG, they’re going to take us over” drum — and it’s over a plea for people to respect the equal rights of disabled people.

Glenn Beck Will Save the World

This is a hilariously deluded video from Glenn Beck, claiming that God has tasked him to fix everything in the world, including reforming the media and the educational system, protecting Israel, and even find new sources of energy for the world. And he’s just overwhelmed by it all, but he knows God will lead him. This is downright cult-like behavior.

When Religion Controls the Law

Reading Jeffrey Toobin’s new book and came across this passage from a Supreme Court ruling in Bradwell v Illinois in 1872. The case was about whether the state of Illinois could ban women from being lawyers. In the initial case, the Supreme Court of Illinois said yes, they could — and quoted a religious rationale for doing so.

Mark Cuban: Skeptic

I’ve always liked Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. I like the fact that he speaks his mind even when it pisses off the NBA and that he matches all his fines from the league with donations to charity. And here’s another reason to like him: He’s hammering the NBA for partnering up with a scam company to promote their fraudulent bracelets.

Lively’s Imagined Coalition With Progressives

The utterly unhinged Scott Lively is ready to ditch the Republican party and form a new coalition, which he amusingly imagines will include “grassroots progressives” that usually vote Democratic. Specifically, he thinks they can win over ethnic minorities and the working poor by pushing for “Biblical values.” It’s a pretty funny screed.

Lipkin: Obama Protects Israel to Destroy It

The wingnuts are tying themselves into all kinds of mental knots trying to explain why President Obama is both a Muslim who wants to destroy Israel and funded the construction of the “iron dome” that has protected that country so well against Hamas missiles. Avi Lipkin, the raging nutball who claims that Obama is importing 50-100 million Muslims to take over America, says Obama is only protecting Israel to lull them into a false sense of security.

Filibuster: Exchanging Scripts Again

With the Democrats holding a slim majority in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid is making noise about doing away with the filibuster, or reforming it in some way, to prevent the minority from blocking votes on legislation as long as they can get 40 votes to continue debate. So let’s set the wayback machine for 2003-2005, when Republicans had control of the Senate and Majority Leader Bill Frist was talking about invoking the “nuclear option” to get rid of the filibuster and the Democrats were throwing a fit about it. Like this:
