Dumbass Quote of the Day

This is actually more than a quote, it’s a conversation between black wingnut E.W. Jackson and deranged bigot Peter LaBarbera on the latter’s radio show, where Jackson declares that gay rights and liberalism has killed more black people than the KKK and slavery combined.

Jackson: It just incenses me when they say ‘you’re haters,’ we don’t hate anybody, we don’t hate anybody, we disagree with them, we don’t hate them, we love them, we pray for them, but truth is truth, right is right. We’ve got to stand up because what they’re doing, what they’re promoting is killing people, and you’re right it is killing black men by the thousands.

LaBarbera: If the media cared more, if people actually cared more about these people, they would actually associate the behavior with the problem but it is like the elephant in the room, it is the one thing you can’t talk about, we see young African American men contracting HIV at astonishing rates and yet it’s not talked about at all as a problem of homosexual behavior, that’s the astonishing thing.

Jackson: If you talk about it you’ll be accused of being a racist just for bringing it up, which is so stupid. Liberalism and their ideas have done more to kill black folks whom they claim so much to love than the Ku Klux Klan, lynching and slavery and Jim Crow ever did, now that’s a fact.

For once, I’m speechless.

    But… but… huh?

Well, it’s a fact that folks like Jackson have no idea what the word “fact” actually means- it never ceases to amaze me when people use that word (“it’s clear” is another, similar meme) when what they really mean is “my poorly-thought-out belief.”

    now that’s a fact

Note to Jackson: Fact is not equivalent to wild ass speculation having no basis in reality.

LaBarbera: I’m not saying it was gay liberal aliens, but it was gay liberal aliens.

The only point at which their rhetoric intersects the real Universe, is the bit about HIV/AIDS killing people. And the problem with that bit, is that the liberals they’re accusing of genocide are the ones who have, since the disease was first identified, consistently pushed for better sex-ed, better access to condoms, and more public support for cure and prevention campaigns, to keep more people from getting killed. Did the wingnuts support any of these life-saving policies?

Actually, the non-astonishing thing, HIV spreading is mostly from heterosexual behaviour including use of prostitutes. These two are also part of the ‘no condoms’ branch of poor thinking. So far from liberalism killing folks, it’s these dumb asses.

Like Raging Bee says, there’s a nugget of truth in here with all the stoopid. And that is, sometimes people do avoid talking about the disastrous HIV rates among African-American men, for fear of being accused of racism. And it’s understandable on both sides: there are certainly a lot of people who say some pretty racist stuff when they open their mouth about this problem.

Of course, one thing is for sure: “Fighting” the problem by just driving more gay and bisexual African-American men into the closet, that’s certain to make things worse. Which is exactly these assholes’ plan.

As someone who was born in the Deep South a mere seven years after the last recorded murder by lynching, this statement makes me very angry. I am a child of that legacy and I find this statement and the person who made it utterly despicable. E.W. Jackson you are a fool and a hate crime/race murder apologist. If there were such a place as Hell there would be a very special place there for you and your ilk.

    Re baal @ #6

The disease is also epidemic among the female population in Africa.

Baal, the CDC contradicts your assertion about the leading cause of new cases. They claim, among African-Americans, new cases break down 70% men, 30% women. Among men 73% was from men having sex with men (MSM). So 73% of 70% puts the number at least 51.1% of new cases being caused by MSM.

LaBarbera and Jackson are still way off the mark. But, unless you can show me why I should doubt the CDC, I must accept that men having unprotected sex with men is the single most significant factor.

Oh, I forgot to mention, among African-American women, 85% of new cases were attributed to heterosexual sex. So if the ratios are consistent that’s an additional 18.6% (30%*85%*73%) of cases that can be attributed to MSM. That would be a total of about 70% of new cases being attributed to men having sex with men or women having sex with a man who did.

@10, Baal may have been thinking of global statistics. I gather that heterosexual transmission is probably the main route in Africa though many African countries don’t collect the data that would allow us to properly study this claim

I can only guess that they believe that if they make all of these things illegal, that proper morality will once again reign supreme and no one will contract HIV because they’re not having sex.

That or, the ones who do contract it will be castigated for breaking the law and we won’t owe them a damn thing and so won’t have to worry about the “problem” of people with HIV.

Ah, but liberalism kills the soul, you see. Those other things use to make black folks send lots and lots of prayers up to God, because they knew for sure the government wasn’t going to help them.

Like baal, I didn’t notice the qualifier
American. Among African men in Africa, most the the HIV cases are due to heterosexual sex.

Having posted the CDC data I now feel obliged to point out why LaBarbera and Jackson are full of shit. The central premise is that Liberalism has made it taboo to talk about the association between male homosexual behavior and HIV, and that this caused more deaths of African-Americans than all the various manifestations of racism combined.

The second part is so ludicrous I’ll chalk it up hyperbole or mind-blowing stupidity. Given the source, I know where my money is. But the first part, laying the blame on Liberalism, is far more interesting. In the 1980’s, after the initial panic, the white community responded with awareness campaigns, condom drives, and “get tested” initiatives. More and more, gays were encouraged to speak out about their experience. It was a very head on, dare I say, liberal, approach and it was very effective.

Contrast that with the reaction of the black community, where the strong religious ties that had helped sustain the community drove black gays to stay in the closet. Condoms were taboo and nobody wanted to talk about even the possibility of HIV. There was a strong tendency to think of AIDS as a white gay man’s disease. There were even rumors that blacks were somehow immune because no one who had it would admit it. Add to this the usual socio-economic obstacles to education and… well we can see the result.

This is of course vastly oversimplified. But I think it illustrates the point, liberalism encouraged people to be open and address the problem while religious social conservatism encouraged silence and ignorance. Looking at the results today, we can see which better contributed to public health.

    Who Knows?

we see young African American men contracting HIV at astonishing rates and yet it’s not talked about at all as a problem of homosexual behavior, that’s the astonishing thing.

Is LaBarbera really saying that there are thousands upon thousands of black homosexual men? And E.W. Jackson is agreeing with him?

    I don’t get it.

“we don’t hate anybody, we disagree with them, we don’t hate them, we love them, we pray for them, … because what they’re doing, what they’re promoting is killing people, ”

But if they genuinely believed liberals and their policies were killing thousands of people shouldn’t they hate them? I mean, Pol Pot killed thousands and thousands of people with his policies and I can honestly say I hate that guy. I don’t just disagree with him. I certainly don’t pray for or love him. It seems to me either one half of the sentence or the other must be a lie. Either they genuinely believe liberals are responsible for thousands of deaths and are lying about hating them, or they’re telling the truth about not really hating liberals because they know the claims about deaths are just fantasies devised to incense the mob. Both things can’t be true at the same time.
