God Will Punish Us if Obama Wins

Bishop Harry Jackson peddles his usual nonsense, telling his congregation that if they vote for Obama, God will punish them and the entire country. Right Wing Watch has the transcript and the video:

Listen to me Black Christian. You are foolish enough to vote against the God that brought you out of slavery, the God that brought you out of the civil rights thing. Just because somebody’s skin is black, you’re gonna support an anti-God, anti-Gospel agenda — no wonder you can’t get a job. If you celebrate your race over grace you ought to do badly. God is spanking you right now. And I got news, you heard it right here, the folks that sign onto this now and support the president right now in this will find that their best days are behind them….Four more years of Barack Obama will ensure an aggressive anti-Christian spirit that has currently grabbed hold of the administration and this country. Beware my Christian friend, you should not vote for Barack Obama.

Whereas if rMoney wins, we’ll be punished here on earth, anyway.

  2. Gvlgeologist, FCD:

And to be more precise, Jackson confuses an agenda that is anti-Christian with one that does not actively give preference to Christians.

  3. Michael Heath:

Is. Mr. Jackson making his case against President Obama in light of some other pastors organizing a revolt against IRS restrictions on non-profit speech in regards to political candidates?

  4. Doug Little:

Somehow I think that even if Romney wins not much will change on this front.

Beware my Christian friend, you should not vote for Barack Obama.

Isn’t this endorsement of one candidate over another? Shouldn’t he church lose it’s tax exempt status?

  5. dingojack:

But Bishop Jackson – I hear god’ll let you wear the gimp suit this time; just as long as he can do a little light spanking!
    Dingo

  6. Randomfactor:

I, too, predict that if Obama is re-elected bad things will happen to this country.

But none of them will be even half as bad as when the Christian god inflicted George W. Bush on us.

    That’s only for progressive churches.

Man, it’s getting hard these days to tell why bad things happen. Some days it is because of the Devil. Some days it is because of Free Will. Some days it is because God is punishing us.

Um, wouldn’t this be the same God that brought you *into* slavery and “the civil rights thing”?

    Mitt Rmoney is Yahveh?

Or is Mitt really a blend of Lincoln & LBJ?

One day, they say, Mitt will be a god, but he ain’t there yet…

  11. cry4turtles:

That’s like telling the kids in the ice cream shop to not support Billy Jack because Sheriff Posner (aka Gawd) will spank them. (Yeah, that’s right, I got some new Billy Jack DVDs).

  12. Sastra:

“… no wonder you can’t get a job. If you celebrate your race over grace you ought to do badly. God is spanking you right now.”

Ah, now I get it. The whole Republican argument against Obama’s economic and business policies is just for show. That’s an irrelevant smoke-screen for the real problem: not enough pandering and cowering to God. Once again, God smites the lowly to punish the high.

  13. dingojack:

Oh god is already spanking right now, let me know when he’s gonna get to the ‘golden shower’ so I can stay indoors.
    Dingo

  14. holytape:

If God brought them out of slavery, someone should tell him that by roughly the same logic, God brought them into slavery.

Mr. Jackson, please read your Bible and some real history books (hint: stay away from anything with David Barton as the author). The god you worship brought you into slavery.
Oh, and learn a little respect for the shoulders you’re standing on. It was the Civil Rights Movement. The way you turn a phrase makes it seem like the struggle black Americans faced (and still face today) for equality was no big deal. Ungrateful theist wretch.

  16. freetheworldof:

Should’nt the tax exemption for his church be taken away?

  17. Ace of Sevens:

So we should support the heretic over the fairly standard protestant Christian?

  18. gshelley:

And the IRS responds by saying

  19. Chiroptera:

Have black preachers always been against Democrats? Or is this a relatively new kind of crazy?

  20. Randomfactor:

Or is this a relatively new kind of crazy?

Marriage equality. Just when they thought THEY would always have someone to oppress, Obama went and supported same-sex marriage.

  21. billgascoyne:

No, no, it’s not him endorsing Romney, it’s God so his tax-exempt status should not be in question. </sarcasm>

I would so love to encounter a preacher actually using that as a defense in court.

  23. dan4:

“…the God that brought you out of slavery, that brought you out of the civil rights thing.”

Wait, did he just equate slavery with civil rights?

  24. dfarmer1584:

I just wanted to chime in and concur with #16, #18, and others; This is EXACTLY what a religious ministry claiming tax exempt status is PROHIBITED from doing. These kinds of violations, however, sadly, it seems to me, are rarely or even simply never investigated and/or penalized, thus rendering the political advocacy prohibitions in the tax code meaningless.

If this Holy Man’s ministry is not claiming the religious tax exemptions, then, by all means, of course, he should say exactly what he feels! I would put myself in harms way, without a moments hesitation, to defend his right to do so, despite finding his message to be dispicable. But, of course his ministy IS taking the exemptions. He should play by the very important rules here.

These religious tax exemptions (I preach loudly to the chior gathered here) must go!

  25. dan4:

@16, @18 and @25: I hope Jackson’s church’s tax-exempt status isn’t yanked. I don’t want to give him the opportunity to play the martyr (“I’m being persecuted by a politicized IRS for speaking the truth about the evil that is Barack Obama!”)

  26. democommie:

“I would put myself in harms way, without a moments hesitation, to defend his right to do so, despite finding his message to be dispicable.”

You would deny all of the KKKristian martyrs, yearning to water the “Tree of LIFE” with their very blood, the opportunity to do so? Oh, that’s right, they’re big on the word, not so much on the flesh.

    Dear Rev. Anti-gayAction Jaxson:

The sort of collar a lot of Teabaggist MurKKKa has in mind for you is not a starched white cottong thing.

  27. danielkim:

I would think that a country that freely and openly chooses a leader who is a member of a heretical church, one that denies the authority and veracity of the Bible and claims to have an alternative “true” Gospel, would be subject to God’s wrath.

its really very simple when you look at the big picture, god is punishing us by allowing satan to infect us with free will.
