Sheila Kennedy on Free Speech »« RNC May Fund Akin Campaign After All

Happy Blasphemy Day!

For the first time in 3 years, I’m not speaking anywhere for International Blasphemy Rights Day. I’m going to spend the day helping put together the 4th quarter newsletter for CFI Michigan (yeah, I know — I live an exciting life). If you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate blasphemy day, may I suggest wearing this shirt:

Or this one:

I declare all religions as a blasphemy to my non-belief.
All religious persons should report to their nearest courthouse ASAP to explain why they should not be locked up for causing ‘spiritual harm’!
(or risk being locked up for Contempt of Court, Resisting Arrest, Attempting to Pervert the Course of Justice & etc.)
    ;) Dingo

Is this an article or an advertisement? Did I accidently navigate to WND?

    /teasing

I shall leave no chop unbusted.

As I said in another thread below:

I struggle to understand why people who are confident in their religious beliefs are so often desirous of making it a crime for someone to hurt their widdle fee-fees. You’d think they aren’t really all that confident after all, and need the force of law to defend what they cannot defend themselves in the marketplace of ideas. But that couldn’t be, could it?

“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” — Voltaire

So just ask Raging Bee and Dingo Jack who they don’t want us blashpeming against (hint: it inolves only one particular founder of one particular religion)

  5. leonardschneider says

I’ll just engage in my normal speech patterns, which would embarrass Huck Finn’s dad.

Besides, I’m more in favor of a “Keep Your Personal Beliefs To Your Goddamn Self For Once” Day. Or maybe work with the Congregationalists, Unitarians, Methodists, Reformed Jews, and Episcopals to create a holiday for progressive faiths, the “We Think The Fundies Are Bigoted Assholes Too — Don’t Lump Us In With Those Fuckheads” Day.

A facebook friend wrote this about blasphemy:

So, some folks want the UN to outlaw blasphemy. I think this is a fine idea! Consider: Judaism and Islam deny the divinity of Christ; this is blasphemy to Christians, so Judaism and Islam are outlawed. Christianity does not consider Muhammad to be a true prophet of God; this is blasphemy to Muslims, so Christianity is outlawed. Hinduism has many gods; this is blasphemy to the monotheistic religions, so Hinduism is outlawed. Buddhism says there is no god, but we are all divine? Blasphemy! Outlawed! *Every* religion can be considered blasphemous by some other religion, so if we outlaw blasphemy, we therefore must abolish all religion. “When blasphemy is outlawed, only outlaws will have religion.”

Here is a very good article by Edward Tabash, over at CFI, re our constitutional rights to speech that others don’t like:

    http://www.centerforinquiry.net/blogs/entry/the_first_amendment_provides_full_protection_to_innocence_of_muslims/

I first met Edward when he came to UCSC to debate a local theologian. I saw him again and got to talk a while at the American Atheists conf after the Reason Rally. He is a valuable asset to our community.

I use the Jesus & Mo icon on Facebook to have a blasphemy day, every day.

  8. zippythepinhead says

I still say blasphemy means you still believe.

That said, the one atheist blasphemy is proselytizing. So go out there and save as many believers as you can from the darkness with the true light of godless humanistic atheism.

  9. Tony •Prom King of Sunnydale High• says

    zippythepinhead:

I still say blasphemy means you still believe.

    Why?
Why does the act of committing blasphemy mean one has to believe?
Moreover, even if your unsupported opinion were true, which belief system does it make me part of when I say “I believe Jesus Christ and Mohammed are fictional characters”? I’ve never been a follower of Islam, nor a Christian. I haven’t believed in any supernatural deity for over 15 years. Prior to that, I wasn’t raised in a religious household, so I never belonged to any particular denomination. Our household just believed in an all powerful deity (God) with ties to various religions.
So again, my act of blasphemy earlier means I still believe in…what? Before you answer that, I *am* an atheist. Which means I do *not* believe in any supernatural creator being(s).

  10. says

So just ask Raging Bee and Dingo Jack who they don’t want us blashpeming against (hint: it inolves only one particular founder of one particular religion)

You ask them, since you seem to be referring to the Raging Bee and Dingo Jack in your imagination.

  11. StevoR says

@ 15. TCC : Funny how no one here has yet blasphemed against Muslims ain’t it? Yeah people notice that. Oh well, I’ll ask :

@ Raging Bee and Dingo Jack : Do you think its legit to blaspheme against Islam and have you the guts to do so yourselves?

Allah is a non-existent pyschopathic sky fairy, Mohammad was no prophet but instead a deluded, hallucinating, egomaniacal, child molesting, rapist, war criminal and tribal thug who deserves no respect, no immunity from mockery and whose life is the exact opposite of a good role model.

    There’s no Allah.

    Mohammad was a despicable scumbag.

Jihad is wrong and evil, and, whatever real or imagined injustices by the Western world, Jihadism and violent criminal protests by murderous tantrum throwing Muslims against books, cartoons, films, beauty pagents and whatever else should never be condoned or excused away and apologists for jihadists, Islamic extremist protests and islam need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Oh & the cult of the homicide-suicide bomber idol worship by so much of the Muslim world is disgusting, warped, evil and pyschologically crippling. Such criminal individuals are simply gone not enjoying endless sex and gluttony in some fantasised paradise – and if there was a hell they’d deserve to be there instead.

Islam is a negative force that has held back and harmed the cultures and people it has infected since it was dreamt up by a brutal liar who didn’t even have the imagination not to steal and incorporate the worst of two other better religions.

    @5.Lou Doench :

    Screw Vishnu!

What’s so special about the Cheese-makers Vishnu?

    Screw the Christian taliban!

Screw the actual, far worse taliban Taliban!

Screw Al Quaida, Islamic Jihad, Ham-ass and all the other islmaic terrorist groups!

Screw the Mormons and their moronic angel and con-man founding “prohophet”!

Screw Islam and its child raping war-criminal false prophet!

Screw Scientology and its warped evil cult – how they hell do they even get anyone to believe the crap they vomit?

Screw L. Ron Hubbard, bad SF writer and compulsive liar.

Screw “rev” Moon and all other cult leaders from the time of the neandertals to yesterday, screw ‘em all!

Screw the caste system, the idea of untouchables, the ingrained inter- cultural racism of Hinduism.

Screw religion and how it messes up people, makes good folks do such appalling evils to each other and wrecks and takes and ruins so many lives!

  13. laurentweppe says

@ StevoR: Jacking off to your genocidal fantasies does not qualify as a courageous stand against religious fanatism, no matter how much secularist jargon you use to wrap it up.

  14. dingojack says

Mr Bongo – Aaaannnd he swings. and misses wildy!
Stevo – Re: blasphemy. You’re new here aren’t you?
Seriously, it’s kinda hard to be impious toward a diety (or deities) when you don’t think there is any such thing (or things).
Try swearing impiously about (or to) a bunyip!
    Dingo
    —–
according to Dictionary.com, theologically none of you have even been in the ball-park:
‘I need no god or gods, I’m am my own ‘god'; I get to decide what I consider are moral thoughts or actions’.

PS: blasphemy comes from the Greek for ‘hurtful uttenance’. I guess ‘hate speech’, ‘slander’ and ‘libel’ already cover it. All god’s gotta do is lawyer-up and go to a court room…

  15. birgerjohansson says

So if I say “Mitt Romney is a corporate raider, a liar and a hypocrite” in Greece, I am a blasphemer? Go blasphemy!

  16. baal says

Sorry I missed this on the 30th – I’d have included a note that (wait I’m typing at work…)

    @#6 tbp1 “hurt their widdle fee-fees. ”

Please don’t. Like ever. I’ve see fee-fees as condescending diminishment of “penis” as well as feelings. In the first case, it’s insulting nature relies on a cultural default that it is ok to ‘belittle’ men with small penis. That’s an offensive gendered insult. In the later case, I’m uncomfortable with belittling actual feelings.

  17. leonardschneider says

Stevo @ 17: You’ll never get your membership card and blazer badge back from the League of Agnostics at that rate.

  18. StevoR says

All religions are shit. But some really are shitter than others.

Compare what they make their foolish followers do and how badly they try to intimidate others who don’t follow them.
