Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, the Pennsylvania state legislator who sponsored the voter ID bill that could disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of people, doubled down on Mitt Romney’s idiotic comments about those who don’t pay federal income taxes, claiming that those people are just too lazy and probably shouldn’t vote:
HOST: Are you absolutely convinced…that the methods to implement this law are effective and will in fact make sure no legitimate voter will be disenfranchised?
METCALFE: I don’t believe any legitimate voter that actually wants to exercise that right and takes on the according responsiblity that goes with that right to secure their photo ID will be disenfranchised. As Mitt Romney said, 47% of the people that are living off the public dole, living off their neighbors’ hard work, and we have a lot of people out there that are too lazy to get up and get out there and get the ID they need. If individuals are too lazy, the state can’t fix that.
And once again, the reality on this planet differs strikingly from the reality on Planet Wingnuttia. As has been previously explained, the 47% who don’t pay federal income taxes are primarily made up of two groups: the elderly who are living on Social Security and the working poor, who receive the Earned Income Tax Credit. The first group already worked hard all their lives; the second group is currently working, for wages too low to live on, rather than being on the “public dole.”
