The maniacally anti-gay Scott Lively, who thinks gay people should be coerced into “reversion therapy” with threats of imprisonment and who blames gay people for the Holocaust, actually seems to think that the anti-gay bigots have been a bit too nice up to this point. And now he says it’s time to get tough:
Now we know that when the leftists attempt to push a “gay fascism bill” in politically conservative areas, our response must be to create controversy to draw public attention to the bill so that the people wake up and realize there’s a problem. Throw out the old playbook of acting nice and trying to persuade the public officials through reason. They think they are smarter than you all anyhow and have already made up their minds. They need to see angry crowds with tar and feathers in hand coming to run them out of office! Indeed, the Mayor of Springfield complained to the media that he was extremely bothered by threats of recall by the citizens.
If you find out there’s a “gay fascism bill” coming to your conservative town and need help exposing it to the public, just give me a call and I’ll come to help. Invite me to give a speech on my book “The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party” or address the global threat of homosexuality – or to give a give a sermon or lecture on ANY aspect of the homosexual issue. When they hear I’m coming to town every left-wing fanatic for miles around will start wailing and gnashing their teeth, and normal people will start popping their heads up to see what’s going on. Once that snowball of public controversy starts down the hill it takes very little effort to keep it rolling till it smashes right through the doors of city hall like an avalanche.
This is the last gasp, the furious reaction, of those who know they’re losing. Those who opposed equality for black people used the same kind of rhetoric 50 years ago, but they lost. The bigots are going to lose too.

“When there’s something queer
In your neighborhood
Who ya gonna call?
FAGBUSTERS!”
One thing that jumped out at me in the paragraph I pasted above is how much it is all seems to be about the self-promotion of Scott Lively. If it weren’t for the existence of homosexuals, he wouldn’t be able to find a purpose in life for himself.

The irony of accusing others of fascism and nazism while calling for tactics reminiscent of the Brown Shirts seems to completely escape him.

Indeed. However, I seem to recall the town voting to become the gay marriage capital during one of the referendums Mayor Quimby holds to solicit crazy suggestions to put money into the city coffers.

If only.
Blacks are not equal, they are still consistently discriminated against, and if anything, Obama’s election brought to light just how much. All that happened was that the discrimination became more subtle, harder to catch. Do we really think that we have come closer to defeating race based bigotry, yet? If anything it is worse that it used to be four years ago.
Lively has hit upon the right tactic, and watch it become increasingly popular.
You demonize the target of your bigotry. You preach hatred, and even advocate “action” which is code for violence against them.
In response, there will be a protest, and Lively will repeat what he is doing. A little later, the protests will die off, because, in reality they do nothing.
It may come to the point where people realize that you have to fight fire with fire, not kind words.
The only hope on the horizon is that the current ranks of bigots are lazy, so the younger generation has not been inculcated with the religion BS, and hence the future looks optimistic.

@ 16. Yep. While I doubt that EVERY virulent anti-gay activist is really a self-loathing, closeted homosexual, I think history shows that the odds are really very good.

What shripathikamath says @ 9 is right and Ed should know it by his own post about that segrgated high school reunion. But even if we have made progress in race, there were a lot of people who were tarred and feathered (or much, much worse) along the way and Lively and his ilk will not hesitate to do it again.

While it is true that we are definitely not there yet, I am old enough to know how far we have come. I lived in the South as a kid. I think I was in my late teens the first time I saw a black customer in a restaurant. When I was a child the fancy gas stations had three bathrooms: Men, Women, and Colored. I was in 9th grade when my school was desegregated and it only happened then because the Air Force decided it was time and told the local school board that if they did not take ALL the Air Force kids in the nearest schools, they wouldn’t get any of us. Before that the black kids were bussed about 30 miles away. The school board tried to stand up to them, but their budget was heavily dependent on the money that they got for each Air Force kid in their schools. They had to give in.
So yeah, we are no where near the end fighting against racism in this country. The racism that fuels so much of the hatred of Obama sure shows that. I won’t live to see the end. But we have made progress.

The Pink Swastika
Please! It’s lavender.
What Scott Lively doesn’t reckon on is people like me, who take his threats rather personally: Yo Scott, why are you making mean noises towards my friends and family?* Us hillbillies take longer to get mad, but when we do we’re pretty much unstoppable — especially when some damn fool is talkin’ all hostile about our kinfolk and close friends. You better think before flappin’ your gums any more, Junior.

If I were to read the article in the link, would I find out what a “gay fascism bill” is?
I’m guessing that it runs along the lines of: “It is illegal to beat people up. Even when they’re gay.”
